DAVID'S PHONE BOOK
This is a very nice phone book program written by David
Carney in Quick Basic. Before you start you must run the
setup program (phonset.exe) which will ask you several
questions about your system, particualarly your modem if you
have one, and will create a configuration file (phone.cfg)
that is used by the phone book program. The first question is
whether or not you even have a modem. If you do not the
configuration process is complete at this point. If you do it
will procede to ask you which com port your modem is
installed on (com1 or com2 only) and what baud rate you wish
to use (300,1200,2400,9600). Next it will ask for an
initialization string. On my modem ATZ did not work so i
included the one that did as an example. You can run the
configuration program as many times as you need to in order
to discover which initialization string will work for you.
After you finish with the configuration you can then procede
to run the program. Once in the program you be given a menu
of choices. Select the one that you want by moving the up and
down arrow keys on your keyboard and pressing enter when the
choice you wish is highlighted.
The Choises are:
Start A New Phone Book - This option allows you to start a
whole new phone book. All entries currently in memory
will be lost if you choose this. There are 10 different
data fields that you will be prompted to enter data for.
if you have nothing to enter for a particular field
simply press enter and it will be left blank.
The fields are:
Company
First name
Last name
Title
Address
City
State
Zip
Phone number
Comment
When finished entering data type a '.' in the Company
field and you will be taken back to the main menu with
your new entries in memory.
View Current Phone Book - This option allows you to view all
entries currently in memory or view one specific entry.
When you choose this you will be asked if you want to
view a specific entry or all. Simply push enter if you
want to view all or type the number of the entry that
you want to view. If you choose all the entries will
scroll down the screen. You can pause the scroll at any
time by pushing the space bar. While paused you have the
option of resarting from the point you paused at or
stopping right there. Push enter to continue or type
'S' to stop.
Edit Menu - This choice will take you to a new set of options
that allow for the editing of the current phone book.
These options are:
Delete An Entry - Allows you to delete an entry on
the current phone book. You will be asked for
the number of the entry you want to delete or
you can get a list of entries by simply
pressing enter. Once you pick one or go
through the list and then pick one, the entry
you selected will be displayed and you will be
asked if you want to delete it.
Add An Entry - Allows you to add new records to
your phone book. Editing is just like that in
Start A New Phone Book option except records
entered will be added to what is already in
memory.
Change An Entry - Allows you to change one of the
entries currently in memory. You will be asked
to enter the number of the entry you wish to
change or just press enter for a list. After
selecting an entry, that entry will be
displayed and you will be asked if you are
sure you wish to change it. If you answer yes
you will be prompted to enter each field of
the entry. To keep a field the same simply
type a '/'.
Edit Macros - This program allows you to define the
function keys to save you typing when you are
entering entries. A list of what the ten
functions are currently set to will be
displayed and then you will be asked to enter
the number of the key you wish to change. Each
key can contain a string of 15 characters or
less. To return to the edit menu simply press
enter. This program now contains the ability
to load and save macro files. You can do this
by typing 's' or 'l' on the main edit macro screen.
If you chose to load you will be shown all macro
files in the current directory and will be
prompted for a filename. Type the full name of
one of these files to load it. If you chose to save
you will be asked for a filename without extension.
Enter one and the current macro definitions will be
saved to that file which can be loaded using the
load command.
Alphabetize Phone Book - Alphabetizes the phone
book currently in memory according to the last
name field.
Return To Main Menu - Returns you to the main menu.
Print Current Phone Book - Allows you to print the phone book
currently in memory. You will first be asked to choose
the lpt port that your printer is on (lpt1 or lpt2).
Next you will be asked if you want to print all the
entries or just a specific entry. Type the number of the
specific entry or hit enter to print them all. Next you
will see a list of the ten fields and will be asked one
by one if you want to print that particular field.
Answer yes or no to each question. After that you will
be asked to set the number of copies that you wish to
print.
Save Current Phone Book = Allows you to save the current
phone book to a file that can be loaded by this program.
You will be asked for a filename. Choose a name of eight
letters or less for your file and leave off the
extension or press enter alone to return to the main
menu. Next you will be asked if you wish to password
protect the phone book file. If you answer yes you will
b prompted to enter the the password. If you choose to
password protect a phone book it may not be loaded back
into memory unless you know the password. The current
phone book will be saved to this file.
Load A Phone Book - This option allows you to load a
previously saved phone book. A directory of phone book
files in the current directory will be displayed and you
will be asked to enter the name of the file you wish to
load. Type the name of the file you want to load leaving
off the extension or press enter alone to return to the
main menu. If the file you chose is password protected
you will now be prompted to enter the password that you
saved it as. If you enter the password correctly the
phone book will be loaded and if you miss the password
access will be denied. The filename you choose will be
loaded into memory.
Search Current Phone Book - Allows you to search any field in
the current phone book for the string that you choose.
First you will be asked to choose the field you wish to
search. Hit enter alone to return to the main menu. Once
you choose a field to search you will be asked for a
string to search for. The field that you chose of every
entry will be searched for that string and if it
contains it, the entry will be displayed. You can pause
the scroll by pushing the space bar.
Dialer - This will allow you to dial the numbers in your
phone book using your modem. You move the selector with
the arrows just like in the other menus in the program.
If you want to dial a particular entry move the selector
to it and push the F1 key. The number will be dialed.
While dialing you can push 'R' to redial the number or
any other key to close the com port. After the number is
dialed and the phone starts ringing, close the com port
and pick up the phone. To see more entries in your phone
book press the enter key. To quit back to the main menu
press the F10 key.
Quit - This option quits the phone book program.
