Version 0.99ß
by: Peter Hebert, 1:135/57
A quick word from Peter
-----------------------
Thank you for trying FastChat. I have tried my best to make
FastChat the most powerful and versatile full screen chat
program available for RemoteAccess, and sincerely hope that
you will enjoy using it.
A program such as this is never truly fully finished, and
only with the support of people like YOU can it evolve
beyond what it is today. This is not a plea for $$$ (but
those are welcome, too :-)), but rather a plea for ideas.
PLEASE, do not stop using FastChat and say to yourself "I
don't like it because...(blah blah blah)", but rather tell
ME what you don't like about it and what you need. I cannot
read your mind, and I truly want to hear from you! It is
only through your input that FastChat can grow.
Thank you for listening to me, and I look forward to hearing
from you soon.
What?! 0.99ß??
---------------
Yes, this version is technically designated beta. Even with
the very able beta team (thanks, guys and gals), there is so
much new that I am not confident that this version will work
100% correctly. The only way I can possibly iron out the
(hopefully) subtle bugs is to get mass exposure to many
differently configured BBSs, hence the public release.
The only true uncertainty is the support for multinode BBSs.
I have absolutely ZERO (0) multinode beta testers, and the
one time I did try it on a multinode system there were
horrific results.
Do NOT get confused: by support for multinode systems I do
NOT in any way mean to imply chatting BETWEEN nodes, *ONLY*
Sysop->User. INTERnode chatting is a whole 'nother monster
altogether.
One last thing, because this is beta, I do *NOT* want to see
THIS version hatched into the SDS. If there's one thing the
SDS doesn't need it's perspective junk. This version will
most likely not last for more than a week or two anyway, but
1.00 (which will include a scrollback facility [if I ever
get it working]) WILL be hatched on completion.
"I used FC 0.95, how do I upgrade?"
-----------------------------------
Upgrading is, needless to say, a slightly rocky path. The
configuration file has been restructured, and the valid
command line parameters changed. What you need to do:
1) Make sure ALL the old .EXE files are replaced with the
.EXE files in the new archive. Also important are
FASTCHAT.HLP, FCSOUNDS.*, and FC???HLP.FC.
2) Run the 095TO099 utility. This will take care of most of
the FASTCHAT.FC upgrading. After you run this, I would
highly recommend running FCCONFIG to verify that all your
settings came through intact (one noticable loss [one
which I did on purpose, too :-)] is the fact that your
old colors will vanish and be replaced by my new favorite
set. You are welcome to change them back, though.)
3) Go into RAMENU and change all type 7 references to FC to
something like:
...[path]...\fastchat.exe Chat *!
4) If you have FastChat on an Alt-Fx key in RACONFIG, change
that line to:
...[path]...\fastchat.exe Forced *!
5) Read the wonderful (and slightly incomplete) docs which I
spent so much time writing.
Hopefully that will get you set. Keep in mind that the
upgrade utility will delete itself upon completion, since
you will only need it once.
Good grief, why all those files?
--------------------------------
There appear to be a lot more files in this ZIP than there
were in 0.95. Here is a listing with brief descriptions of
all these files:
FASTCHAT.EXE - FastChat! (LZEXEd)
FCCONFIG.EXE - Configuration program (LZEXEd)
FCUSERED.EXE - Alt-E user editor
FCCOLORS.EXE - Alt-A online color changer
PAGERAC.EXE - PAGE.RA -> FASTCHAT.FC compiler
FCTASKM.COM - Task Manager
FCTASKM0.COM - Task Manager / ZERO-byte version
FASTCHAT.DOC - Documentation (you BETTER read it!)
FCSOUNDS.FC - Internal sounds data file
FCSOUNDS.FCI - Internal sounds index file
FASTCHAT.HLP - FastChat generic help
FCSYSHLP.FC - Sysop's Ctrl-E help text
FCUSRHLP.FC - User's Ctrl-E help text
095TO099.EXE - 0.95 -> 0.99 Conversion utility
EZZSA_4.ZIP - EZZSA v4.0 - by: James Rhodes
(b) SAMPSCRN.ZIP - Sample .ANS / .ASC screens
README.099 - This file
ps: DON'T MESS WITH MY ARCHIVE COMMENT! Granted it's not
really important, but *I* put it there and it's *MY* space
and I don't want a BBS ad there!
What's new in 0.99ß, anyway?
----------------------------
There are many many improvements over 0.95 in this version,
however I will only be able to touch upon them in this file.
I recommend you go in with FCConfig and play around with all
the new options.
■ Support for 24-hour clock, variable position on the
bottom line.
■ User / Sysop text colors split. The text and border of
any given window can now have (the same) background
color.
■ While chatting, Alt-E calls up a user editor much like
the RA Alt-E editor. Edit all aspects of the current
user online. Also can press Alt-I while editing the
user to call up NEWUSER.ASW info.
■ Alt-A in ANSI mode allows you to change the current
ANSI colors.
■ Most text strings (Paging the SysOp..., etc) are now
customizable via FCConfig
■ 32-user "Lockout list" in FCConfig for locking out some
users from paging or for silencing annoying users.
■ Paging hours can wrap around midnight (ie: 10PM-6AM)
■ Faster! ANSI optimization routines prevent superfluous
ANSI codes from going down the phone line.
■ Customizable online help for the sysop and the user
while online
■ EZZSA 4.0 [ (c) 1990 James Rhodes ] included for auto-
matic PAGE.RA swapping and compiling
Please enjoy using FastChat. I encourage you to communicate
with me about what you'd like to see in future versions, and
I also encourage you to register (it's ONLY $15!). Let's
make FastChat the best full screen chatter available for RA.
Sincerely,
Peter Hebert
Author
ps: So far as I know, this will only work as a type 7 with
RemoteAccess. I am told that the current versions of QBBS
and SBBS (besides using a different format) do not write an
EXITINFO.BBS file on a type 7 exit. Awwww well.
Also: I don't know if this will work on the upcoming release
of RA 1.00. Hopefully if the RA crew decide to mutilate the
structures on us poor authors, they will warn us ahead of
time. Hopefully, this release of 0.99ß won't be around for
the release of RA 1.00, though...(just think! Ra 1.00 and
Fc 1.00, at just about the same time :-) Wouldn't that be
neat?)

NEW IN REVISION B
-----------------
Because this is a beta version it is everchanging... The
changes in this document because of 0.99ß-b are signified by
a (b) in the left margin. A summary of changed things:
■ Bug fixes (various)
■ Ctrl-P while chatting to disconnect user [Why <P>? It
stands for "poof". You'll see why when you try it...]
■ New user information window. While paging, a little
blue window will appear at the bottom of the screen.
By default this window is OFF, however on the Options
menu of FCConfig there is a switch to turn it on. Try
it, you'll like it :-)
■ Flat mode. By putting an at-symbol (@) after the any
command line parameter word (but before a colon), you
can force that command to work in ASCII mode only.
This changes the LOCALASC parameter to LOCAL@, and
adds two new parameters:
FastChat Chat@[:node] - User pages in ASCII mode
FastChat Forced@[:node] - Force chat in ASCII mode
Even though this is "ASCII mode", it is in color to
the remote user if he uses ANSI.
■ RA.LOG writing. Two new options exist in FCConfig for
writing to RemoteAccess's log. Under the Directories
menu you will find a) RA Log Filename and b) RA Log
Style. The former is the path\filename of the RA.LOG,
the latter selects between Binkley/FroDo format.
Also, I have added some autodetection code for determining
whether the EXITINFO.BBS file is from a Quick/SuperBBS or
from RA, and there is a CHANCE that if you run FC as a Type
15 from Quick/Super it will work. Of course, the best sol-
ution is to use RA and run it as a Type 7.
NEW IN REVISION C
-----------------
Yes, a third revision! New things:
■ Dual SysOp feature. On the Customization menu, you
will find an option labelled "Secondary SysOp". If
there are two SysOps that run your BBS and both can
answer pages (ie: Husband and Wife, etc), set this to
the name of the one who is not the "official" SysOp.
The Secondary SysOp can answer the page by pressing
Alt-C instead of C. Also, the Secondary SysOp can
force-chat or be paged by adding a "/2" to the
commandline which you use. Example:
\ra\fastchat.exe chat/2*!
\ra\fastchat.exe forced/2*!
■ Scroll rates selectable by baud rate. In FCConfig,
you can now have a different scrolling action for
each baud rate. This changes that branch of the menu
structure slightly, as so:
Selecting End of window action from the Options menu
now pops up a menu with baud rates and the current
scroll rate selection. Selecting any of these pops
up a menu which allows you to change the EOW action
for that particular baud rate.
■ Online help in FCConfig!! From nearly any point in
FCConfig you can press F1 to get a little green help
window on that option.
NEW IN 0.9925 (0.99¼)
---------------------
■ Bugs in the dual sysop feature corrected. Can now
do a FCCONFIG /2 in order to edit the second config
file (a little 2 will appear in the upper right hand
corner of the screen).
■ Scrollback!! Just hit Ctrl-B. The bottom line will
prompt you <S>ysOp or <U>ser. Select which window you
wish to scroll back in and bingo.
Scroll through the buffer with the arrow keys (most
retain normal functionality as would be expected). To
exit scrollback, hit Esc.
To exit scrollback and "bleed through" what is
currently displaying, hit Ctrl-Enter. This allows you
to show the user what has been said, etc. The old
text will disappear when the window's owner presses a
key.
Notice: Although a "Use EMS" option appears on the
scrollback menu in FCConfig, you will not be able to
select it. During alpha testing I had a MAJOR disk
crash caused by use of this function. It will be
re-enabled when I am able to stabilize it.
■ FCConfig will now correctly create a config file. Le
oops.
