  14.           Thank you for trying FastChat.  I have tried my best to make
  15.           FastChat the most powerful and versatile full screen chat
  16.           program available for RemoteAccess, and sincerely hope that
  17.           you will enjoy using it.

  19.           A program such as this is never truly fully finished, and
  20.           only with the support of people like YOU can it evolve
  21.           beyond what it is today.  This is not a plea for $$$ (but
  22.           those are welcome, too :-)), but rather a plea for ideas.

  24.           PLEASE, do not stop using FastChat and say to yourself "I
  25.           don't like it because...(blah blah blah)", but rather tell
  26.           ME what you don't like about it and what you need.  I cannot
  27.           read your mind, and I truly want to hear from you!  It is
  28.           only through your input that FastChat can grow.

  36.           Yes, this version is technically designated beta.  Even with
  37.           the very able beta team (thanks, guys and gals), there is so
  38.           much new that I am not confident that this version will work
  39.           100% correctly.  The only way I can possibly iron out the
  40.           (hopefully) subtle bugs is to get mass exposure to many
  41.           differently configured BBSs, hence the public release.
  42.  
  43.           The only true uncertainty is the support for multinode BBSs.
  44.           I have absolutely ZERO (0) multinode beta testers, and the
  45.           one time I did try it on a multinode system there were
  46.           horrific results.

  48.           Do NOT get confused: by support for multinode systems I do
  49.           NOT in any way mean to imply chatting BETWEEN nodes, *ONLY*
  50.           Sysop->User.  INTERnode chatting is a whole 'nother monster
  51.           altogether.

  53.           One last thing, because this is beta, I do *NOT* want to see
  54.           THIS version hatched into the SDS.  If there's one thing the
  55.           SDS doesn't need it's perspective junk.  This version will
  56.           most likely not last for more than a week or two anyway, but
  57.           1.00 (which will include a scrollback facility [if I ever
  58.           get it working]) WILL be hatched on completion.

  60.           "I used FC 0.95, how do I upgrade?"

  63.           Upgrading is, needless to say, a slightly rocky path.  The
  64.           configuration file has been restructured, and the valid
  65.           command line parameters changed.  What you need to do:
  66.  
  67.           1) Make sure ALL the old .EXE files are replaced with the
  68.              .EXE files in the new archive.  Also important are
  69.              FASTCHAT.HLP, FCSOUNDS.*, and FC???HLP.FC.
  70.  
  71.           2) Run the 095TO099 utility.  This will take care of most of
  72.              the FASTCHAT.FC upgrading.  After you run this, I would
  73.              highly recommend running FCCONFIG to verify that all your
  74.              settings came through intact (one noticable loss [one
  75.              which I did on purpose, too :-)] is the fact that your
  76.              old colors will vanish and be replaced by my new favorite
  77.              set.  You are welcome to change them back, though.)

  79.           3) Go into RAMENU and change all type 7 references to FC to
  80.              something like:

  82.              ...[path]...\fastchat.exe Chat *!

  84.           4) If you have FastChat on an Alt-Fx key in RACONFIG, change
  85.              that line to:

  89.           5) Read the wonderful (and slightly incomplete) docs which I
  90.              spent so much time writing.

  92.           Hopefully that will get you set.  Keep in mind that the
  93.           upgrade utility will delete itself upon completion, since
  94.           you will only need it once.

  128.           There are many many improvements over 0.95 in this version,
  129.           however I will only be able to touch upon them in this file.
  130.           I recommend you go in with FCConfig and play around with all
  131.           the new options.

  133.             ■  Support for 24-hour clock, variable position on the
  134.                bottom line.
  135.             ■  User / Sysop text colors split.  The text and border of
  136.                any given window can now have (the same) background
  137.                color.
  138.             ■  While chatting, Alt-E calls up a user editor much like
  139.                the RA Alt-E editor.  Edit all aspects of the current
  140.                user online.  Also can press Alt-I while editing the
  141.                user to call up NEWUSER.ASW info.
  142.             ■  Alt-A in ANSI mode allows you to change the current
  143.                ANSI colors.
  144.             ■  Most text strings (Paging the SysOp..., etc) are now
  145.                customizable via FCConfig
  146.             ■  32-user "Lockout list" in FCConfig for locking out some
  147.                users from paging or for silencing annoying users.
  148.             ■  Paging hours can wrap around midnight (ie: 10PM-6AM)
  149.             ■  Faster!  ANSI optimization routines prevent superfluous
  150.                ANSI codes from going down the phone line.
  151.             ■  Customizable online help for the sysop and the user
  152.                while online
  153.             ■  EZZSA 4.0 [ (c) 1990 James Rhodes ] included for auto-
  154.                matic PAGE.RA swapping and compiling

  156.           Please enjoy using FastChat.  I encourage you to communicate
  157.           with me about what you'd like to see in future versions, and
  158.           I also encourage you to register (it's ONLY $15!).  Let's
  159.           make FastChat the best full screen chatter available for RA.

  165.           ps: So far as I know, this will only work as a type 7 with
  166.           RemoteAccess.  I am told that the current versions of QBBS
  167.           and SBBS (besides using a different format) do not write an
  168.           EXITINFO.BBS file on a type 7 exit.  Awwww well.

  170.           Also: I don't know if this will work on the upcoming release
  171.           of RA 1.00.  Hopefully if the RA crew decide to mutilate the
  172.           structures on us poor authors, they will warn us ahead of
  173.           time.  Hopefully, this release of 0.99ß won't be around for
  174.           the release of RA 1.00, though...(just think!  Ra 1.00 and
  175.           Fc 1.00, at just about the same time :-)  Wouldn't that be
  176.           neat?)

  183.           Because this is a beta version it is everchanging...  The
  184.           changes in this document because of 0.99ß-b are signified by
  185.           a (b) in the left margin.  A summary of changed things:

  187.             ■  Bug fixes (various)
  188.  
  189.             ■  Ctrl-P while chatting to disconnect user [Why <P>?  It
  190.                stands for "poof".  You'll see why when you try it...]
  191.  
  192.             ■  New user information window.  While paging, a little
  193.                blue window will appear at the bottom of the screen.
  194.                By default this window is OFF, however on the Options
  195.                menu of FCConfig there is a switch to turn it on.  Try
  196.                it, you'll like it :-)

  198.             ■  Flat mode.  By putting an at-symbol (@) after the any
  199.                command line parameter word (but before a colon), you
  200.                can force that command to work in ASCII mode only.
  201.                This changes the LOCALASC parameter to LOCAL@, and
  202.                adds two new parameters:

  204.                FastChat Chat@[:node]   - User pages in ASCII mode
  205.                FastChat Forced@[:node] - Force chat in ASCII mode
  206.  
  207.                Even though this is "ASCII mode", it is in color to
  208.                the remote user if he uses ANSI.

  210.             ■  RA.LOG writing.  Two new options exist in FCConfig for
  211.                writing to RemoteAccess's log.  Under the Directories
  212.                menu you will find a) RA Log Filename and b) RA Log
  213.                Style.  The former is the path\filename of the RA.LOG,
  214.                the latter selects between Binkley/FroDo format.
  215.  
  216.           Also, I have added some autodetection code for determining
  217.           whether the EXITINFO.BBS file is from a Quick/SuperBBS or
  218.           from RA, and there is a CHANCE that if you run FC as a Type
  219.           15 from Quick/Super it will work.  Of course, the best sol-
  220.           ution is to use RA and run it as a Type 7.

  225.           Yes, a third revision!  New things:
  226.  
  227.             ■  Dual SysOp feature.  On the Customization menu, you
  228.                will find an option labelled "Secondary SysOp".  If
  229.                there are two SysOps that run your BBS and both can
  230.                answer pages (ie: Husband and Wife, etc), set this to
  231.                the name of the one who is not the "official" SysOp.
  232.  
  233.                The Secondary SysOp can answer the page by pressing
  234.                Alt-C instead of C.  Also, the Secondary SysOp can
  235.                force-chat or be paged by adding a "/2" to the
  236.                commandline which you use.  Example:
  237.  
  238.                \ra\fastchat.exe chat/2*!
  239.                \ra\fastchat.exe forced/2*!
  240.  
  241.             ■  Scroll rates selectable by baud rate.  In FCConfig,
  242.                you can now have a different scrolling action for
  243.                each baud rate.  This changes that branch of the menu
  244.                structure slightly, as so:

  246.                Selecting End of window action from the Options menu
  247.                now pops up a menu with baud rates and the current
  248.                scroll rate selection.  Selecting any of these pops
  249.                up a menu which allows you to change the EOW action
  250.                for that particular baud rate.

  252.             ■  Online help in FCConfig!!  From nearly any point in
  253.                FCConfig you can press F1 to get a little green help
  254.                window on that option.

  256.           NEW IN 0.9925 (0.99¼)

  259.             ■  Bugs in the dual sysop feature corrected.  Can now
  260.                do a FCCONFIG /2 in order to edit the second config
  261.                file (a little 2 will appear in the upper right hand
  262.                corner of the screen).

  264.             ■  Scrollback!!  Just hit Ctrl-B.  The bottom line will
  265.                prompt you <S>ysOp or <U>ser.  Select which window you
  266.                wish to scroll back in and bingo.
  267.  
  268.                Scroll through the buffer with the arrow keys (most
  269.                retain normal functionality as would be expected).  To
  270.                exit scrollback, hit Esc.
  271.  
  272.                To exit scrollback and "bleed through" what is
  273.                currently displaying, hit Ctrl-Enter.  This allows you
  274.                to show the user what has been said, etc.  The old
  275.                text will disappear when the window's owner presses a
  276.                key.

  278.                Notice: Although a "Use EMS" option appears on the
  279.                scrollback menu in FCConfig, you will not be able to
  280.                select it.  During alpha testing I had a MAJOR disk
  281.                crash caused by use of this function.  It will be
  282.                re-enabled when I am able to stabilize it.
