Star Traders 3.6
This is the sixth BBS release. The program runs directly under
many, many different BBS systems. Verified BBS systems no include
WWIV, WildCat, GAP, GT, DoorWay, all the various DorInfo.Def systems
(EIS-PC, FoReM, OLEcom, QuickBBS, RBBS, Remote Access, TAG, and
TP-Board), 2 A.M., Forum, ModuleX, Phoenix, RyBBS, SearchLight, and
Spitfire, PCBoard 14.x, and Opus 1.14. PCBoard 12.x and Auntie BBS are
in need of BETA testing, please see BBSNotes.DOC for further details).
- BBS notes -> STARSBBS.EXE -
- general info
This program directly accesses the com port and uses ANSI escape
sequences to update the user's screen. This is the fastest and most
complete BBS version. It will run on all BBS systems that I've tried
The default version does not check the player time, or get the player
name from the BBS. Recommendend time allowed is from 15 to 30 minutes.
For proper installation check BBSINFO.DOC.
- STARSBBS.INS
This instruction file needs to be placed in the same directory as
STARSBBS.EXE.
- upgrading from Star Traders 3.56 or earlier.
If you used version 3.56 or earlier, you'll need to run the enclosed
CONVERT.EXE program in the directory that contains the Hall of Fame
data files. This will change the format to one that accepts larger
scores (the all time high is over 28 Billion).
- BBS Info -> Regisration and Trial Run -
You may try before you buy. Please limit your trial period to
a maximum of two months. This game will not self-destruct, and
I won't send the mafia after you, but we are all in this together.
Regisration costs $10. For that price you will get your own
personalized version of the game featuring your registration number
and BBS info. You will also recieve trial versions of all other
games currently available. See REGISTER.DOC for the registration.
- Get to the point -> The game explained -
Detailed instruction are found by playing the game. The game
takes place on a 25x10 map. The player is given 50 turns to build
a vast interstellar trading system. Each turn, the player is
given 5 choices to turn into outposts. If the player chooses a
space in the middle of nowhere, it will create an outpost. If
the space is next to another outpost or a star, it will create
a company. If it next to a company, it will be added to that
company. If it is between two or more companies, it will cause
them to merge. 'Being next to' is defined only in the vertical
and horizontal directions, diagonals are meaningless. There
are two versions to play. In the new version, up to 25 companies
may be formed, and in the old version only 6 may be available at
any time (plus mergers are slightly less profitalbe). A good
score on the new version is anything over 8 million. A good
score on the old version is anything over 4 million. There is
a large amount of luck involved, but skill and strategy will
consistently bring good scores. Be careful, the two versions
require subtle but fundamentally different strategies. The new
version is generally more enjoyable, but the old version can be
more satisfying of more frustrating. As of this writing, the
all-time highs are 80mill for the new, and 53mill for the old.
Actually in the year and an half since the above was written, many
new strategies have been discovered. With heavy buying and selling,
scores in the hundreds of millions are common. Occasional scores
in the Billions are seen.
- Star Traders -> Why 2 versions? -
Why not?
- Hall of Fames -
The game creates three Hall of Fame files:
StarBNew.HOF, StarBOld.HOF.
They contain the Hall of Fames for the two versions. If you get
tired of them, just delete them and start over. The Hall of Fame
contains 24 entries, the all-time high, last month's 3 best, and
this month's top 20. These are NOT text files.
StarsHOF.TXT (default - can be changed - see command line directive /Y)
This file contains the all time high, last months three best, and
the current top ten for both versions, formatted for a one screen
display. Excellent for bulletins, etc...
- That's Not My Table - Tech Talk -
The SysOp accepts all responsibility for this programs implementation.
The Author is not responsible for any damages caused by running these
programs. If you are attempting an installation, it is always best
to TEST the program before opening it up to the public. Make sure
all switches are correct. If you have any technical questions or
suggestions, please send a SASE to the above address or contact me
through E-Mail on the WWIVnet.
If you find another system that this runs on/under that is not
mentioned above, please include that in your regisration. I am
always looking for new systems.
- changes from 2.1 to 3.0 -
Program interfaces with Gap, WWIV, and WildCat. Other BBS systems
can try the /B and /C switches. If you can get me a copy of
the file your BBS creates, I can easily make this program run
under it. If you have questions, please contact me at the
postal or e-mail addresses above. Since this is the initial
release, other systems may have been added by the time you
are reading this.
Program no longer needs DoorWay or other shell program. It directly
accesses com port.
