----------------------------------
* The great WV\OnLine callers and those who tested this software:
Danny Crews, Jack Greenwood, James Budddenberg, Jon Whitehouse,
Scott McGee and others.
* Friends and family who tolerate my disappearances to work on
computer software.
Thanks are also extended to my partner, Aldo Pucci, who
provided me with good "constructive criticism," and who got me
started BBS'ing.
User Supported Software
-----------------------
This program is distributed under the User Supported
Software Concept. User Supported Software is a way to allow you
to review the program, test its operation on your system
configurations, and determine whether or not you feel the
program is suitable for you and your users before you have to
register it.
If you find that BBS Stock Market fulfills your needs, you must
register your copy. If you do not register it, then you must stop running
it. Registration is mandatory if you decide to use the program and wish
support from the author. Registration may be obtained by mailing
to Mountain State InfoSystems the order form included in the
MSIMART.ZIP file, along with $15.
BBS Stock Market Files
----------------------------
The following files were distributed by Mountain State
InfoSystems in the MSIMART.ZIP file:
BBSMART.EXE -- The executable program file to start BBS Stock Market
RUNMART.CNF -- ASCII configuration file you will need to modify
for your system
STOCK.DAT -- Data file with initial stock information
CALLER.HLP -- Data file for help screens
MENU.HLP -- Menu assistance screens
BBSMART.CLR/.BBS -- Game logon screens
BBSMART.DOC -- This documentation file
ORDER.DOC -- Order form for BBS Stock Market
If this .ZIP file did not pass Pkunzip's Auto Verification when you
unzipped it then I recommend that you discard all related files and call
WV\OnLine for a good copy.
Shareware vs. Registered Version of BBS Stock Market
----------------------------------------------------
The shareware version (1.0) of BBS Stock Market has the
following characteristics not found in the registered version:
--- ----- -- --- ---------- -------
1) The logon informational screens presented will read
"Unregistered's BBS Stock Market" instead of your BBS's name.
2) You can not customize the stock names, prices, availability,
etc. and you can not manipulate the users's file or stock
file to fine-tune the game to your board's call volume.
REGISTRATION will correct the above constraints PLUS:
1) Bring you unlimited technical support via WV\OnLine.
2) Entitle you to free upgrades via modem for ALL FUTURE
VERSIONS of BBS Stock Market.
3) Registration also entitles you to download the accessory
program, MyMart, that will allow you to customize and better
maintain BBSMART. This program allows you to monitor user
positions, delete users, rename the stocks to names of your
choice and more; all through a pull-down menu system.
4) BBSMART registration entitles you to a one year subscription
for your BBS to The MegaList at no additional cost.
Registration
------------
Registration is a very easy process. Included in the
MSIMART.ZIP file is a document called ORDER.DOC. Simply print
out the form, fill it out, and send it with your check or money
order or VISA / Mastercard information to the address listed on the
form.
Upon registration you will be added as a WV\OnLine paid subscriber with
sysop status. If you call WV\OnLine you should check out Support Door
for Sysops and Demo Doors.
About BBS Stock Market
----------------------
BBS Stock Market is a stock market simulation. The following
operational descriptions duplicate information which will be available to
your callers through the help screens:
GENERAL CONCEPT
BBS Mart is a stock market simulation. You begin your stock trading
career with $10,000 in cash and your goal is to triple your money by
buying and selling common stocks.
Simply stated, you will want to make money by buying stocks and then
selling them later for more than you paid for them, thus realizing a
profit.
BBS Mart will help you monitor the status of your cash and stock
holdings and will advise you when their combined value has equaled
or surpassed your investment goal of $30,000.
When you reach your goal your skill level rating will be increased
by one (1) and your investment position will be re-started with
$10,000 in cash and no stocks. You will then resume your investment
career at your new, higher skill level.
The key to successful stock trading is to select stocks for purchase
that you feel are likely candidates to rise in value while avoiding
stocks that may be about to fall in value.
It is also important to recognize when to take your profits and also
to admit when you have made a mistake as you watch your investments
fall in value.
As there are no trading commissions in BBS Mart, there is no reason
not to switch to cash or to other stocks when your purchases are not
performing as you had hoped they would.
It is advisable to monitor your trading position as often as you
can. This will serve as insurance against your trading position
getting out of control on the downside and will also help protect
the skill level you have achieved.
If you should find yourself in a position where your investments
seem to be stuck in the basement and your cash is low, you will want
to consider resetting your account.
If you select this option you will be advised that all of your stock
holdings are about to be liquidated and that your cash will be
adjusted to $10,000.
If you elect to continue the reset process your skill level will
also be reduced by one (1). Therefore, try to refrain from selecting
this option until you are certain that you are stuck in your current
position and that you are missing out on a major market upturn.
It is also important to monitor your trading position often so that
you may be credited with a higher skill level as soon as you have
reached your investment goal.
You should NOTE that should the value of your cash and stocks rise
above your goal and then fall back below your goal before you have
called in to check, then you will not receive credit to your skill
level for having surpassed your investment goal.
You must be present to win!
To be successful you must pay attention to what the informational
screens are telling you and must not be afraid to take a risk.
Have a good trading day!
MENU FUNCTIONS
BUY STOCKS: Use this function when you are ready to buy some shares.
You will be provided with a display of all listed stocks along with
some information about their present status. Each stock may be
identified by a reference number which you will see to the left of
the stock name. Use this number to indicate which stock you wish to
purchase. After you have selected a stock for purchase you will be
asked to enter the number of shares you are buying. If that company
has shares available and you have not requested a purchase which is
greater than your available cash then your buy order will be
precessed immediately. Please note that should a stock fall below $5
per share in value then buy orders will be suspended in that
company's shares until they return to $5 per share or higher.
YOUR FINANCES: This function will display a screen which summarizes
your financial position. Your cash and the value of your stock
positions will be totaled. Your skill and the amount needed to reach
your goal will also be listed.
GET QUOTES: These selections cause the Stocks Quote Screen to be
MORE QUOTES displayed. The stock names are listed along with each
stock's high and low quote since the last time an investor reset their
account or the last time someone reached their goal and achieved a
higher BBS Mart skill level. The center of the display serves as a
quick reference which shows the number of shares you own for each
company plus your current gain or loss. The right side of the display
shows the number of investors who own shares of each company plus the
number of shares that remain available for purchase. MORE QUOTES
should be used to toggle the display screen between the first and
second twelve stocks. The rightmost column repeats the stock names to
facilitate reading accross the wide rows of information.
INFO: Is available from the Buy Stocks Screen. If you want additional
information on a stock you are considering for purchase just type the
stock's number as indicated on the display screen and then type
"Info".
Account Reset: Use this function as a last resort when your trading
position has become hopeless and your cash is low. Any stocks that you
own at the time will be disposed of and your cash will be restored to
$10,000. Also, your BBS Mart skill level will be reduced by one. You
will resume at your new skill level.
SELL STOCKS: This is how you take your profits or cut your losses.
You will be provided with a display of all listed stocks along with some
information about their present status. Each stock may be identified by
a reference number which you will see to the left of the stock name. Use
this number to indicate which stock you wish to sell. After you have
selected a stock to sell you will be asked to enter the number of shares
you are selling. You may sell all the shares you own or just a portion
of them. Your cash will be credited for the full amount of your sell
order.
MARKET WATCH: This screen presents some statistics that will give
you a snapshot view of where the general market is going. The
information includes the total market value and current average share
price. You will also see the current session number and the total
number of trades to-date plus the current session's volatility rating is
indicated.
YOUR STOCKS: The Your Stocks screen lists vital information about
the stocks you currently own. The current quote for each stock you hold
is provided as well as your cost for each position and its actual value
as of the last quote. Your gain or loss for each position is calculated
and any news that is currently affecting each stock's performance is
indicated.
-----------------------------------
The features of BBS Stock Market (Version 1.0) include:
<1> Compatibility with systems that are compatible with
PCBOARD.SYS, USERS.SYS, DOOR.SYS, CALLINFO.BBS,
DORINFOx.DEF, CHAIN.TXT, or SFDOORS.DAT for interfacing
to the BBS.
<2> Generates an online "Top Ten Current Scores" bulletin, as well as
BBSMART.BLT (ASCII) and BBSMARTG.BLT (ANSI) files the can be
copied to other BBS files on your system. (Like the bulletin
section)
<3> BBS Stock Market will exit back to the BBS if it detects
no keyboard activity for 4 minutes. At input prompts,
it will return to the BBS after 3 minutes of inactivity.
<4> BBS Stock Market automatically determines if the
remote system has color capability. If it does, the
user will see color graphics screens, otherwise,
monochrome graphics will be sent. Non-ANSI callers
will be immediatley returned to the board.
Setting Up BBS Stock Market
---------------------------------
A file called RUNMART.CNF was sent with the MSIMART.ZIP
distributed by Mountain State InfoSystems. This file must be
edited, using your favorite text editor, for the program to operate
properly.
Currently, RUNMART.CNF like this:
C:\SF\SFDOORS.DAT <- Location of SFDOORS.DAT ! or see below !
WV\Online <- BBS name
Robert <- Sysop's first name
Ducker <- Sysop's last name
C:\WCWORK\NODEx <- For WildCat! 3.0+ users only.
Location of work directory
The format for RUNMART.CNF is detailed below. As above, there must
be no blank lines.
For Line 1 choose one of the following
--------------------------------------
C:\PCB\PCBOARD.SYS <- For PCBoard systems using PCBOARD.SYS
only.
C|\PCB\USERS.SYS <- For PCBoard systems using USERS.SYS
C:\BBS\CALLINFO.BBS <- For Wildcat! systems (prior to v3.0)
C:\BBS\DOOR.SYS <- For systems that support DOOR.SYS
C:\BBS\DORINFOx.DEF <- For QBBS/RBBS/RA. Replace x with Node #.
C:\BBS\SFDOORS.DAT <- For Spitfire systems.
For Remaining Lines
-------------------
WV\OnLine <- BBS name
Robert <- Sysop's first name
Ducker <- Sysop's last name
NOTE: BBSMART supports COM 1-4 on the standard IRQ's - COM1/COM3 = IRQ4 and
COM2/COM4 = IRQ3. If you wish to use a non-standard IRQ, add the IRQ
number after the configuration filename. Let's assume your are
running BBSMART on COM1 and IRQ5. The command line passed to your
Door would be:
BBSMART RUNMART.CNF /5
The /5 tells BBSMART to use IRQ5 rather than the standard IRQ4 that
is normally used with COM1. No /x parameter is needed for the
standard IRQ's.
Running BBS Stock Market
------------------------
First, create a directory called "BBSMART". Then copy all of the
files in MSIMART.ZIP into it.
The following command must be present in the file you use to
invoke door programs:
CD\SF\BBSMART <- Path where the BBSMART files reside
BBSMART RUNMART.CNF
That's it!
BBS Stock Market creates a file called USERS.DAT that contains
the players' names and status information. It also creates a
file called DFRAME.ERR, which will list any errors that the program
might have encountered. It you get errors, please bring them to my
attention.
Resetting BBS Stock Market
--------------------------
Save a copy of the original STOCK.DAT to be used when you wish to restart
BBSMART. To reset BBS Stock Market, delete the Users.dat file
and the STOCK.DAT file from the BBSMART directory. Then copy an original
STOCK.DAT (unused) to the BBSMART directory. Then delete all the .BUL and
.BLT files. If you simply wish to reset the scores, delete BBSMART.BUL
file. The accessory program, MyMart, will be available to you after you
register BBS Mart and will automate the reset process.
