AUTODESK UNVEILS HYPERCHEM SOFTWARE FOR COMPUTER-AIDED MOLECULAR DESIGN
NEW YORK - Autodesk announced a major educational grant program and
revealed plans to develop an authorized dealer channel for its new
HyperChem software today at the American Chemical Society (ACS)
National Meeting in New York City. HyperChem is a molecular modeling
software product that enables chemists to create, visualize, manipulate
and perform computational analyses on molecular structures -- all on a
desktop computer.
Autodesk plans to ship a Windows version of HyperChem, which runs on
80386- and 80486-based personal computers, early in 1992. A Silicon
Graphics version of HyperChem, which runs on IRIS 4D and IRIS Indigo
workstations under Motif, is scheduled to ship later in Autodesk's
first quarter. Autodesk is showing both versions of HyperChem in its
booth at the ACS show.
With HyperChem, Autodesk aims to set a new price/performance standard
for benchtop molecular modeling systems. HyperChem provides chemists
with a sophisticated and flexible tool that is affordable, easy to use,
and available on standard personal and workstation computers.
HyperChem features computational chemistry capabilities previously
available only on costly workstation or mainframe computers, along with
a graphical user interface, and a full suite of modeling and
visualization tools. "Chemists, biochemists and scientists in related
fields can use HyperChem to better understand the molecular structures
and properties of various compounds, which allows them to use their lab
time more productively and shorten the development cycle for new
products," explained Joel Voelz, general manager for Autodesk's
Scientific Modeling Business Unit. "We expect HyperChem to make these
benefits available to a much broader market, much as AutoCAD made
computer-aided design more accessible to designers, architects, and
engineers," he added.
Autodesk is establishing a major new Educational Grants program for
HyperChem. Under this program, Autodesk will make more than U.S. $2
million in software available for instructional and research projects
in academic institutions. HyperChem, with its easy-to-use interface
and powerful visualization and computational capabilities, is an
invaluable tool for classroom instruction or laboratory study of
molecular structures and computational chemistry methods. HyperChem is
also an excellent research tool for doctoral students or professors.
HyperChem grant applications can be obtained by writing the Autodesk
Education Department, c/o HyperChem Grants Program, 2320 Marinship Way,
Sausalito, CA 94965, or by calling 800/424-9737.
HyperChem is developed by HyperCube, Inc. of Waterloo, Ontario,
Canada. Autodesk holds an equity interest in HyperCube and has
exclusive, worldwide marketing and distribution rights for HyperChem.
"HyperCube's extensive computational and theoretical chemistry
expertise nicely complements Autodesk's software development, marketing
and distribution expertise," noted Voelz. "We knew we had a
scientifically and technically sound product in HyperChem, and found
the marketing and distribution strength to match in Autodesk,"
commented Neil Ostlund, HyperCube's founder and chief executive
officer.
Autodesk, Inc. plans to distribute HyperChem through a well-qualified
dealer channel that reflects the geographical distribution and
concentration of the market. Autodesk and HyperCube will provide
technical and sales training and ongoing support to qualified dealers.
"Autodesk has more than eight years of experience in designing,
building and supporting authorized dealer channels that can effectively
deliver sophisticated software solutions to demanding technical and
professional customers," observed Charles Rudkin, HyperChem sales
director. Daratech reports that Autodesk's AutoCAD dealers generated
over U.S. $3.5 billion of business from AutoCAD-based solutions in
1990 alone.
"We plan to build on this success as we establish an authorized dealer
channel geared to the specific needs of the scientific market, by
applying proven strategies for penetrating such important market
segments as education, major corporate accounts, and federal, state and
local government," continued Rudkin. Autodesk is looking for dealers
with previous experience selling to chemists, biochemists or
researchers in related fields. Qualified dealers will also be expected
to have a degreed scientist on staff to provide knowledgeable pre- and
post-sales support. More information on HyperChem dealer requirements
or an authorized dealer application can be obtained by writing to the
HyperChem Sales Director at Autodesk, 2320 Marinship Way, Sausalito, CA
94965, or by calling 800/424-9737.
