Advanced Power Management
─────────────────────────
If you have a power manageable display attached to your computer, and the
display conforms to the VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) DPMS
(Display Power Management Signaling) interface, then using the Advanced Power
Management driver will save you power. The APM driver does this by instructing
your display to go into various power saving states, after a time of user
inactivity has been detected.
This readme file tells you how to install and use this feature for OS/2.
Prerequisites for Installation
──────────────────────────────
1) You must have Advanced Power Management(APM) installed via the OS/2
selective install. (If you do not have a POWER Icon you need to
install APM, the Power icon is initially placed in the OS/2 System
Setup icon view)
2) You must have the driver support for your power manageable display.
(Your display should be selectable via the OS/2 System icon view,
System Setup icon view, System Icon, Screen (page 2), display selections)
Installation for OS/2
─────────────────────
To use Advanced Power Management driver under OS/2, you need a version of
OS/2 which supports APM, IBM OS/2 2.1 or greater supports APM.
To install from the APM Installation diskette perform the following steps.
1) Insert the APM Device Support Installation diskette in your diskette drive.
2) Select the OS/2 System icon view. (Select = Double click with
mouse over Icon)
3) Select the Command Prompts icon view.
4) Select the OS/2 Full Screen or the OS/2 Window icon view.
5) Change to the [A:] diskette drive. (type A: and press enter)
6) Type REMAPM and press enter.
7) After the program completes, minimize or close the command prompt
window or exit if you are in full screen command prompt view.
(type EXIT and press enter key)
8) Select the OS/2 icon view.
9) Select the System Settings icon view.
10) Select the Device Driver Install icon. (DDINSTALL)
11) Input the desired directory information. (Make sure this is correct)
(The destination must be your boot drive)
12) Select the Install pushbutton, after completion EXIT the install program.
After the Installation completes and BEFORE you shutdown perform the following
steps.
13) Select the Command Prompts icon view.
14) Select the OS/2 Full Screen or the OS/2 Window icon view.
15) Change to the (X:\OS2) Subdirectory. (Where X is your boot drive)
16) Type INSTOPT and press the enter key.
(this will add the Options page to your Power Icon)
(remove the diskette from the diskette drive before doing the next step)
17) You must now shutdown and reboot your computer to pickup the changes.
(shutdown is available by a clicking the right button on your mouse
from the desktop)
** At this point Installation will be complete, Please read on. **
The APMBIOS.SYS device driver will be installed in the \OS2 subdirectory.
The new APM.SYS device driver will be installed in the \OS2 subdirectory.
The OPT.DLL file will be installed in the \OS2\DLL subdirectory.
The INSTOPT.EXE file will be installed in the \OS2 subdirectory.
** Other support files may be copied to your hardfile.
Your CONFIG.SYS file will be updated with the following:
DEVICE=\OS2\APMBIOS.SYS /SBTO:15 /SUSPTO:30 /DSPOFFTO:60 /DPMS:N
DEVICE=\OS2\APM.SYS /D
Info:
DEVICE=(Drive:)\OS2\APMBIOS.SYS /SBTO:mm /SUSPTO:mm /DSPOFFTO:mm /DPMS:x
where: mm = a time-out value in minutes (from 1 to 99).
mm = NOW causes immediate entry into that power saving state.
mm = DISABLE prevents the system from entering that state.
x = YES - override the DPMS setting in the monitor's DMQS file.
x = NO - do not override DPMS setting in the monitor's DMQS file.
Only the initial letter of the keywords YES, NO, NOW, and DISABLE
is required.
For proper operation, the time out values should be chosen so that:
SBTO is not greater than SUSPTO, and
SUSPTO is not greater than DISPOFFTO.
Example: DEVICE=(DRIVE:)APMBIOS.SYS /sbto:3 /suspto:5 /dspoffto:15 /dpms:y
Using Advanced Power Management
───────────────────────────────
OS/2 Advanced Power Management will allow you to put your power
manageable display in up to three different states which are :
STANDBY : Minimum power saving, but immediate return to ON
SUSPEND : Medium power saving and medium return to ON
OFF : Maximum power saving, but some noticeable delay in
returning to ON
By default, these values will be set to :
STANDBY 15 minutes
SUSPEND 30 minutes
OFF 60 minutes
This means that if the user does not touch the keyboard or mouse for 15
minutes, then the display will go into STANDBY mode. 15 minutes later it
will go to SUSPEND mode. 30 minutes later it will go to OFF mode.
Whenever the user presses a key or moves the mouse, the display will
return to ON. ON is the only state where the screen is not blanked.
The user can set each of these time-out values from 1 to 99 minutes.
Any of the three states may be disabled.
See you monitor documentation for recommended settings. The
recommended settings for the IBM PS/2 14" Energy Saving Color Monitor are:
STANDBY 5 min. to 30 min.
SUSPEND 20 min. to 50 min.
OFF 40 min. to 70 min.
Using Advanced Power Management with OS/2
─────────────────────────────────────────
When the OS/2 APMBIOS has been installed to run on a "OS/2 System with APM"
and OS/2 detects that you have the APMBIOS driver loaded, the Power Management
Icon will have an additional page in the Power Management Settings notebook.
Click on the Power icon and you will see the Power panel with a Power
Management Dialog. Click on the system icon in the top left corner of the
dialog, select settings, a new APM Options page will appear. Here you are
able to change time-out values for different power saving states, enable
or disable states, or make your display go into one of the power saving
states immediately.
For proper operation, the time out values should be chosen so that:
STANDBY timeout is not greater than SUSPEND timeout, and
SUSPEND timeout is not greater than OFF timeout.
Click on the "Help" button on the Power Management Options Panel for further
information.
IMPORTANT NOTES
───────────────
1) If your monitor is power manageable, you should never use the XGA-2 2.1
DMQS file with XGA-2 2.02 Display Drivers.
Always install the DMQS files that come on your XGA-2 Device Driver
diskette.
2) If you are in any of the power saving states, press ANY key or MOVE the
mouse to bring the monitor back to ON state. The mouse is the preferred
method to bring the monitor back to the ON state.
3) Their should be only one DEVICE= statement for APM.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS
file
