  12.      I. PRODUCT INSTALLATION
  13.      =======================

  15.      If you received REMIND from Compuserve or a Bulletin Board System, you
  16.      most likely received an archive file or self-extracting archive.  You
  17.      should unpack this archive file using the appropriate unarchiving
  18.      program (PKUNZIP, LHA, etc.).  If the file is self-extracting (that is,
  19.      it has an .EXE extension), simply type the self-extracting program's
  20.      name to extract the individual files.

  22.      When REMIND is distributed on disk (for example, when registered users
  23.      receive upgrades), an installation program is included and may be used
  24.      to simplify installation.  In the examples below, it will be assumed
  25.      that your floppy drive is drive A.

  27.            Place the distribution disk in drive A and type:

  32.            Follow the screen instructions.  Help is available from within
  33.            the installation program by pressing <F1>.  We suggest you
  34.            install REMIND to its own hard disk directory, though this is
  35.            not required.  For example, when asked for a directory to
  36.            install the program to, you might choose C:\REMIND.
  37.  
  38.            If you have a monochrome monitor attached to a color adaptor (or
  39.            a LCD laptop), you may type INSTALL /MONO to force the displays
  40.            into monochrome.
  41.  
  42.      If you do not wish to use the INSTALL program, you may extract the
  43.      files manually by running the program UNPACK.EXE and specifying the
  44.      names of the .LZH files to unpack.  For example, type:
  45.  
  46.                C:                 (if drive C is the program drive)
  47.                CD\REMIND          (if \REMIND is the program directory)
  48.                A:UNPACK A:*.LZH
  49.  
  50.      After installing or unpacking the program, you should print the
  51.      manual, REMIND.DOC, and follow its instructions for setting up and
  52.      running REMIND.  To print the documentation, type the following at the
  53.      DOS prompt in the directory containing the REMIND program files:

  55.                COPY REMIND.DOC PRN
  56.  
  57.      (Note the 2 spaces.)  Print is formatted for 8.5" x 11" paper.

  60.      II. UPGRADING FROM PREVIOUS VERSIONS
  61.      ====================================

  63.      Install (or use DOS to copy) the new versions of REMIND.EXE, 
  64.      REMINDER.HLP, REMUPDAT.EXE and REMIND.DOC to the same directory where 
  65.      you keep the old versions.  These files are the only ones that you 
  66.      need to upgrade earlier versions.  You also may wish to copy the 
  67.      optional or sample REMIND files, listed below, to your REMIND 
  68.      directory.

  70.      Automatic conversion
  71.      --------------------

  73.      REMINDER.DAT (the default data file) and REMINDER.HST (the history
  74.      file) work with all versions of REMIND.  Therefore, you need not
  75.      re-enter your reminder data.  REMIND will read your current
  76.      REMINDER.DAT file or other data files and convert them to the newer
  77.      format the first time you load and save them with REMIND.

  79.             [Note that the data file format for versions 2.5 and later
  80.             is NOT downwardly compatible with earlier versions.  To
  81.             use converted data files with earlier versions of REMIND,
  82.             you must manually edit the data file(s) to remove "+"s and
  83.             event types not supported by the earlier versions of
  84.             REMIND.  Otherwise, you could lose some newer event types
  85.             and warning day information in your data file.]

  116.      SAMPLE.CAT:  A user-modifiable category list file, REMINDER.CAT, is
  117.      created (if it doesn't already exist) as new categories are added.
  118.      However, a sample category list file, SAMPLE.CAT, is supplied, to help
  119.      get you started using categories.  If you wish to use this sample
  120.      file, simply rename it REMINDER.CAT:

  124.      SAMPLE.DAT:  You can load this sample data file instead of the default
  125.      data file, REMINDER.DAT, from the REMIND display screen with <Alt-F>.
  126.      This will help you see what reminders look like, and allow you to try
  127.      out the program before entering your own reminders into REMINDER.DAT.

  129.      SAMPLE.OPT:  This file contains start up options from one of our
  130.      user's (color) system.  If you wish try SAMPLE.OPT, you can rename it
  131.      to REMINDER.OPT.  Be sure to make a back up of any existing option
  132.      file first.  Or you can simply change your existing option file by
  133.      including one or more of the options in SAMPLE.OPT.

  135.      HOLIDAYS.DAT:  This data file contains most U.S. holidays and some
  136.      religious holidays for the next few years.  You can load this file
  137.      separately with <Alt-F> from REMIND's display screen, or load it via
  138.      the command line:

  140.           C:>REMIND HOLIDAY.DAT
  141.  
  142.      You also can copy its contents with an ASCII text editor into your
  143.      existing REMINDER.DAT file, or you can use the DOS copy command to
  144.      merge or append it to your existing data file (which should be in
  145.      the same directory), like this:

  147.           C:>COPY REMINDER.DAT + HOLIDAY.DAT RMNDTEMP.DAT
  148.           C:>DEL REMINDER.DAT
  149.           C:>REN RMNDTEMP.DAT REMINDER.DAT

  151.      If you decide to merge it, you may want to edit it first (with an
  152.      ASCII editor) to delete some holidays or add more holidays to the
  153.      list.

  155.      HOLIDAYS.DAT may not contain some holidays (especially those that
  156.      fall on different days of a given month) beyond the next few years.
  157.      It is included only as an example of what you can do with the
  158.      REMIND program, and is not intended to be comprehensive.

  161.      III.  NOTE FOR MS-DOS 5.0+ USERS
  162.      ================================
  163.  
  164.      REMIND has been tested successfully under MS-DOS 5.0, 6.0, and 6.20.  
  165.      There are no known restrictions under these new versions of the 
  166.      operating system.

  169.      IV. SUMMARY OF NEW FEATURES & CHANGES
  170.      =====================================
  171.      
  172.         *  A pop-up calendar showing the number of events due each day is 
  173.         available by pressing <Alt-C> or by clicking on the top (date 
  174.         information) line of REMIND's main display screen.  Pressing <Esc> 
  175.         returns to REMIND's main display screen after using the calendar.

  177.            The calendar also is useful in quickly jumping to another date
