The SeeDee Organizer
By: Ken Hutchinson, 72164,1236
November 1993
Welcome to the SeeDee organiser, for listing and ordering your CD
collection. This program has been written so that it is extremely easy
to use. In addition, it will run on any PC compatible machine,
from an XT to a 586, monochrome graphics to Super VGA. The
number of CD's that can be entered into the program is dependent on
the length of entries and the number of songs for each, but should be
at least 2000. This shareware version however is limited to 25 CD's.
To register your version of SeeDee, send $20, US or Canadian
to: Ken A. Hutchinson

phone (905) 627-1564
If you have any questions, I can be contacted at the above address
or through CompuServe number 72164,1236
Also available is a version of SeeDee meant for people with mostly
Various Artist CD's. This version allows for a separate artist entry
for each song. I am also willing to customize a version of SeeDee
just for you. With compressed character printing for longer fields,
different sized and names for fields etc.
The following is a simple set of instruction for operating the
SeeDee organizer:
1) TO INSTALL the program on your hard disk drive, first create a directory
for it. For example, after your computer boots, type "MD SEEDEE". Next,
move into that directory by typing "CD SEEDEE". Copy the contents of
the distribution disks into the directory by typing "COPY A:*.*".
2) TO START THE PROGRAM go into the directory where the program is located
and type "SEEDEE". Alternatively, if you know the name of the data file
that you wish to use, type "SEEDEE {name of file}" .
3) OPENING A FILE. If the name of your data file was included when you
started the program, the file will be loaded automatically. However, if
a name was not included, an file open dialog box will appear. Either type
in the name of your file on the blue line, or press TAB and then use the
cursor keys to highlight the appropriate file. Press Enter when done and
the file will load.
4) LISTING THE DATABASE. Type Alt-L to see the List Menu. Highlight
the List CD's topic and press Enter. A list of all CD's will appear.
Use the cursor keys to move up and down through the list.
You can also use Page Up, Page Down and Home and End to move through
the list.
5) ADDING A NEW CD. To select Add, press the highlighted letter of the
add button (in this case "A"), or use a mouse to press the Add button.
Type the artist name in the top blue line. Press TAB and then type in
the CD title on the second blue line. Press TAB again and enter the
reference number of the CD. Press TAB again and enter the category
of the CD. Press TAB again to go to the Song listing.
Now press "A" to add a new song. After typeing in the song
name, press "Enter". Add all songs by pressing "A", then press "Enter"
when finished. At that point, the CD list will appear and the new record
will be saved to disk and added to the list.
The Category and Number Entries can actually be used for any information
that you want. For example, you may use them to rate each CD from 1 to 10
or from A+ to D- or you could use them for publisher or song writter etc.
6) DELETING A CD. Press "D" to delete a record.
7) VIEWING SONGS. Press "S" to view the songs of the currently selected
CD.
8) FINDING AN ARTIST, TITLE, CATEGORY, NUMBER OR SONG.
Press "F" to do a record search. Use the cursor key to select what
type of search to do, then press Tab and enter the string to search for.
Letters do not need to be capitals to be considered the same.
The search will start from the current position and look forward,
stopping at each match. To continue searching, simply press "F" again.
A complete name does not need to be typed in, only the number of
letters entered will be checked. For example, to search for "The Beatles",
you could enter a search string of "the beat".
9) EXITING THE CD LIST. Press either "K" or Esc to finish.
10) SELECTING WHAT TO LIST BY. From the List Menu, select "LIST BY".
Use the cursor to select what column you wish the listing to be
ordered by.
11) BACKING UP YOUR DATA. Press Alt+F to select the File menu, then
highlight Backup and press Enter to select backup. This will back up
the data to a file called BACKUP. Although this file will be usefull
if a you make a large mistake, it will not help in the event of a disk
failure. You should back up your data to a floppy disk regularly.
Copy the files with the extension .ART and .TUN
12) PRINTING THE DATA. Data can be printed out either the same
as the Listing Order with a separate entry for each Song, or without
any songs, or ordered by song title ( Note that this will take some
time on slow machines or with alot of CD's ). Select Print, select
what you want to print by, and press Enter to begin. Before you
begin, make sure that your printer is On-Line and has plenty of paper.
To halt printing, press any key. After the print buffer empties, the
program will ask whether you wish to continue or stop printing.
13) CHANGE DIRECTORY. To change what directory the data will come from,
select Change Directory from the File menu. Either type in the desired
directory on the blue line or press Tab and then use the cursor keys to
highlight the desired directory. Press Enter when done.
14) DOS SHELL. To execute a Dos command, select Dos Shell. To return
to the program, type EXIT
15) EXIT THE PROGRAM. Select exit or press Alt-X to exit the program
16) OTHER NOTES. The bottom line of the screen is the status line.
The status line displays what hot keys are available. In addition, if
there is a critical error, such as a general disk failure, it will appear
here. Remember to back up your data regularly. The BACKUP instruction
will make a backup copy but you should still back up to a floppy disk
regularly.
Insert a disk in drive a and type: COPY {YOUR_NAME}.TUN A:
COPY {YOUR_NAME}.ART A:
