1- What is Smart Cleaner ?
1.1 Why you need Smart Cleaner ?
Don't know if you have already noticed the grows of Windows 95, while using it.
That's because, many programs leave temporary files on the hard drive.
When we understood which types of files were slowing up our system, we
started deleting them, and, as our systems were much in demand, we were obliged
to delete them every day. In other words, we searched all types of temporary
files, located them, and deleted them one by one. We decided to create a
program that would deletes them all for us. That's what we've done.
Paco made all graphical parts, and Mister Wonderful wrote the code.
As we were satisfied with this program, we decided to give it to everyone
who is in the same position as we were.
So, if you use Windows 95, if you never clean your system, and if you don't
have any stress with freeware products, then you need Smart Cleaner.
1.2 How does it work?
Smart Cleaner scans the disk you selected for several type of files that do not
have any use, and deletes them.
1.3 Is it safe?
Smart Cleaner is safe when it is used correctly.
DO NOT USE SMART CLEANER WITH OTHER APPLICATION(S) OPENED.
Applications, while running, create some temporary files that are put on HD
during the process. If you kill a tmp file used by an application in process,
this will probably crash the application and you will loose all your work
you haven't saved...
Anyway, this operation will neither crash Windows 95 nor your HD.
2- Working with Smart Cleaner
2.1 Safety Precautions
The only precaution is not to run Smart Cleaner with other applications
in process on the system.
2.2 Running the program : What does what ?
When it starts, a menu appears with all kind of files that Smart Cleaner can
delete.
Select the drive you want to scan.
Select the files you want to kill. Smart Cleaner will search these files on
the disk you've selected and will show all the files found.
Then you'll have 3 choices :
- Delete them all
- Go back to menu
- Select those you want to delete.
Files selected will be killed from your system.
Then you'll be able to choose another type of file, or exit.
2.2 Type of files supported
Smart Cleaner is able to clean 9 different types of files :
- BAK Files are files backup copies that have been modified.
- OLD Files are files backup copies that have been modified.
- TMP Files are temporary files that are not deleted by Windows for
many reasons (the main one is to turn off the computer without
exiting Windows).
- ~MP Files are temporary files that are created by Windows
applications and are not deleted for many reasons (the main one
is to turn off the computer without exiting applications).
- GID Files are created by Windows 95 to speed up help files access.
Deleting them won't prevent HLP files from running.
- MSCREATE.DIR Files are temporary files that are created by instal-
lation of Microsoft applications. We really don't understand why
these files are not deleted. We'll have to ask Bill !
- FILE_ID.DIZ Files are files that explain in few words the application's
utility. These are much used in shareware.
- CHKLIST.* Files are files that were used by MS-DOS and CPS anti-
virus to check for viruses. They do not have any utility now.
- Da0 Files are backup files of the registration table. You can delete
them if you haven't made any change in your configuration.
