  1. Windows NT Server Tools for Windows 95 Beta Notes
  2. -------------------------------------------------
  3. This document contains information about the Windows NT(TM) Server
  4. Tools that wasn't available when the "Windows NT Server
  5. Installation Guide" version 3.5 (also used for Windows NT Server
  6. version 3.51) was printed.

  19. 1. Installing Windows NT Server Tools
  20. -------------------------------------
  21. This version of Windows NT Server Tools is for use on computers 
  22. running Windows(TM) 95.
  23.  
  24. To install the Server Tools on a computer running Windows 95:
  25.  
  26. 1. Make sure the boot drive has at least 2.5M free.
  27.  
  28. 2. Click Start, and then point to Settings. 
  29.  
  30. 3. Click Control Panel.
  31.  
  32. 4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  33.  
  34. 5. Select the Windows Setup tab.
  35.  
  36. 6. Choose the Have Disk button. Specify a directory (local,
  37.    CD-ROM, or network drive) that contains the Windows NT Server
  38.    Tools files (there must be a srvtools.inf file in this
  39.    directory). Choose OK.
  40.  
  41. 7. Click the box next to the Windows NT Server Tools entry.
  42.  
  43. 8. Choose the Install button. After all of the files are copied,
  44.    choose OK.
  45.  
  46.    Windows NT Server Tools are installed in a \srvtools directory
  47.    on the computer's boot drive. 
  48.  
  49. 9. Manually adjust lines in the computer's AUTOEXEC.BAT file to
  50.    include c:\srvtools in the PATH (if c: is the boot drive).
  51.    For example, if the boot drive is c:, append the following to
  52.    the line that starts with "PATH....":

  54.    ;c:\srvtools
  55.  
  56. 10. Restart the computer for the new path to take effect. (Click
  57.     Start, and then click Shut Down. Select Restart the Computer.
  58.     Click Yes).

  60. The Windows NT Server Tools are now installed on the Windows 95 computer. For more information about using Windows NT Server Tools,
  61. see "Using Windows NT Server Tools" later in this file.

  64. 2. Additional Password Prompts for Windows NT Server Tools
  65. ----------------------------------------------------------
  66. When you use the Windows NT Server Tools on a Windows 95 client
  67. computer, you will be asked at times to log on or to enter your
  68. password for verification. If you were running the normal
  69. Windows NT versions of these tools on a Windows NT computer,
  70. you would not need to supply your password separately. These
  71. additional password prompts are necessary to ensure that you
  72. have administrative privilege for the server on which you are
  73. focused.

  76. 3. Establishing Trust Relationships With Windows NT Server Tools
  77. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  78. When you use the Windows NT Server Tools, you can create trust
  79. relationships between domains but you cannot verify them. Be sure
  80. to enter correct passwords for the trust relationships.

  83. 4. Logging on through Windows NT Server Tools
  84. ---------------------------------------------
  85. If you are not logged on and you start any of the Windows NT
  86. Server Tools, you will get a message that says that the computer
  87. is not logged on to the network. First log on to the network and
  88. then run any of the Windows NT Server Tools.

  90. 5. Removing Windows NT Server Tools
  91. -----------------------------------
  92. 1. Click Start, and then point to Settings. 
  93.  
  94. 2. Click Control Panel.
  95.  
  96. 3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  97.  
  98. 4. Select the Install/Uninstall tab.
  99.  
  100. 5. If you have installed Windows NT Server Tools as described 
  101.    in item 1, you should see the Windows NT Server Tools entry in 
  102.    the Uninstall list. Select it and click Add/Remove.

  104. Note: the directory where Windows NT Server Tools was installed 
  105. (usually c:\srvtools) will not be removed by the Install/Uninstall 
  106. program. You will have to remove this directory manually.

  109. 6. Using Windows NT Server Tools
  110. --------------------------------
  111. When you install Windows NT Server Tools the installation program:
  112.  
  113.    Copies the Windows NT Server Tools files to c:\srvtools
  114.    (if c: is the boot drive).
  115.  
  116.    Adds "Windows NT Server Tools" to the Start Programs menu.
  117.  
  118.    Adds a "Windows NT Server Tools" program group to
  119.    Program Manager (PROGMAN.EXE, compatible with Windows 3.x).
  120.  
  121.    Adds extensions to Windows Explorer so that you can change
  122.    security settings when viewing an NTFS drive or a print queue
  123.    on a computer running Windows NT Server or Windows NT Workstation.

  125. NOTE: To use any of the Windows NT Server Tools you must have
  126. administrative privilege at the computer you choose to administer.

  128. To use Event Viewer:
  129.  
  130. 1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then point to
  131.    Windows NT Server Tools.
  132.    - or -
  133.    Start Program Manager (PROGMAN.EXE) and open the Window NT
  134.    Server Tools group.

  136. 2. Click Event Viewer.
  137.  
  138. 3. Type the name of a computer running Windows NT Server or
  139.    Windows NT Workstation.
  140.  
  141. 4. For more information about Event Viewer, see Windows NT Server
  142.    or Windows NT Workstation documentation or the online help.

  145. To use Server Manager:
  146.  
  147. 1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then point to
  148.    Windows NT Server Tools.

  150.    Start Program Manager (PROGMAN.EXE) and open the Window NT
  151.    Server Tools group.

  153. 2. Click Server Manager.
  154.  
  155. 3. Select a computer to administer. Or, from the Computer
  156.    menu, choose Select Domain to see computers in another domain.

  162. To use User Manager for Domains:
  163.  
  164. 1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then point to
  165.    Windows NT Server Tools.

  167.    Start Program Manager (PROGMAN.EXE) and open the Window NT
  168.    Server Tools group.

  170. 2. Click User Manager for Domains.
  171.  
  172. 3. Choose a user account or group to administer. Or, from the User
  173.    menu, choose Select Domain to see accounts in another domain.

  175. 4. For more information about User Manager for Domains, see
  176.    Windows NT Server documentation or the online help.

  179. To edit security properties of a printer or an NTFS file object on a Windows NT Server or Windows NT Workstation:
  180.  
  181. 1. Focus on the object and look at its Properties dialog box. There
  182.    are many ways to do this. For example:
  183.  
  184.       Click Start, point at Programs, and then click Windows
  185.       Explorer. In the left pane, double-click Network
  186.       Neighborhood. In the right pane, double-click the name
  187.       of the computer you want to administer. In the right pane
  188.       again, click the object you want to administer. Click the
  189.       Properties button on the toolbar.
  190.    - or -
  191.       Click Start, point at Find, and then click Computer. Type
  192.       the name of the computer and then click Find Now.
  193.       Double-click on the name of the computer. Click the object
  194.       you want to administer. Click the Properties button on
  195.       the toolbar.

  197. 2. In the Properties dialog box, click the Security tab. Now you
  198.    can change the settings for permissions, auding, and ownership
  199.    of the object.

  201. 3. For more information about changing security settings, see
  202.    Windows NT Server documentation or the online help.

  204. NOTE: The following methods for selecting an object to
  205. administer do NOT work:
  206.  
  207.    Administering print queues through the Printers list
  208.    in My Computer. These print queue objects represent print
  209.    queues local to your Windows 95 computer, even if the
  210.    queue is redirected to a Windows NT Server or Windows NT
  211.    Workstation print queue.
  212.  
  213.    Using the Windows 3.x Print Manager. It no longer exists
  214.    in Windows 95; the Printers icon in the Main group of Program
  215.    Manager is just a shortcut to the Printers list in My Computer.

  217.    Using File Manager (WINFILE.EXE) in Program Manager. Installing
  218.    Windows NT Server Tools does not add a Security menu to
  219.    File Manager as it did for Windows 3.x.
