  4.             VENDINFO Standard Gains Widespread Industry Support
  5.    
  6.     Parker, Colorado -- June 16, 1993 -- Rams' Island Software is pleased
  7.     to announce that the VENDINFO Software Distribution Information System
  8.     has gained widespread support throughout the shareware and BBS
  9.     industries.
  10.    
  11.     VENDINFO is a system to convey software product information and
  12.     distribution permissions from the author to distributors.  A standard
  13.     file (based on a public format) will carry extensive information in a
  14.     compressed, efficient form.  The associated toolset will aid the
  15.     author in constructing the record, and will allow the distributor to
  16.     extract portions of the record, or to make distribution decisions
  17.     based on its content, in a highly automated way.  VENDINFO will allow
  18.     automation of many operations now performed manually by BBS Sysops,
  19.     disk vendors, etc.  It will also increase use of author-provided
  20.     product descriptions, and will improve compliance with product
  21.     distribution policies.  A centralized product registry will allow
  22.     distributors to search for products satisfying their needs, and to
  23.     obtain contact information for the products thus located.

  25.     Manufacturers of the following BBS software and BBS file-upload
  26.     processors have "committed in principle" to support the VENDINFO
  27.     standard:

  29.                Searchlight BBS, Searchlight Software
  30.                TBBS BBS, eSoft Inc.
  31.                Auntie BBS, Wes Meier
  32.                PowerBBS for Windows, Russell Frey
  33.                Sapphire BBS, Pinnacle Software
  34.                Tinyhost BBS, Bruce Krobusek
  35.                WME BBS, Jason Fesler
  36.    
  37.                TransScan Upload Processor, Craig Dunstan
  38.                CheckZip Upload Processor, Bill Hull
  39.                DIZIT Upload Processor, Corsoft
  40.    
  41.     "Support of VENDINFO" means that these vendors agree to utilize the
  42.     VENDINFO record for product descriptive information.  "Commitment in
  43.     principle" means that this agreement is subject to satisfactory
  44.     delivery of the public file standard and the associated (non-public)
  45.     software library by Rams' Island Software.
  46.    
  47.     A concept paper about VENDINFO was released for public comment on
  48.     May 8, 1993, with comments due by June 30.  Here are some of the
  49.     comments already received:

  79.     A prototype version of the VENDINFO toolset is being demonstrated at
  80.     the Summer Shareware Seminar, held June 18-20 in Indianapolis.  The
  81.     formal file standard is scheduled for release in July.
