TSR Download is a soft font manager. This is release 2.9d of the share-
ware version of the program. This version incorporates automatic soft
font decompression for LaserJet fonts, allows use of TSR Download under
Windows 3.1, offers a new user interface, and only requires 7K of RAM.
Other new features include: improved list file management, full mouse
support, automatic creation of landscape fonts when needed, support for
scalable fonts, and MS-DOS 5/6 additions.
If you want to use the font compression option, make sure you have en-
abled it when you configure the program with DLCFG. You must also use
the stand alone soft font compression program CFT to first compress
your soft fonts. If you want TSR Download to create landscape fonts
you must enable this option with DLCFG and compress the fonts with CFT.
Please remember that this is a shareware product. You may evaluate it
per the instructions in the manual, but you must register your copy if
you continue to use the program past the 20 day evaluation period.
This version of TSR Download uses a memory swapping technique to con-
serve memory. The program will occupy only 7K of RAM, but needs to
place part of itself: on a hard disk, or on a RAM disk, or in EMS
memory. The DLCFG program lets you choose where the rest of the pro-
gram is stored. If you have both a hard disk and a RAM disk, you are
much better off telling TSR Download to swap itself to the RAM disk.
Note that you must register this shareware if you continue to use it
beyond the 20 day trial period.
NEW FEATURES!
1) A few computer systems seem to lock up when TSR Download or the
DLCFG program sound a beep. You can disable these sounds in TSR Download
using the DLCFG program. Previously, though, the DLCFG program itself
would beep which could lock up a mcahine. You can now start the DLCFG
program with a "quite" option to eliminate this problem. If you machine
locks up with the beep sound in DLCFG, just start the program as follows:
dlcfg -q
2) TSR Download now runs as a DOS application under Windows 3.0. For
complete information on using TSR Download under Windows see the sep-
arate documentation disk file WINDOWS.DOC. DeskJet owners can finally
send soft fonts to their printer from within a Windows application.
A separate installation program WINDINST.EXE is supplied which will
configure TSR Download to properly run under Windows.
3) TSR Download can take quite a while to scan your soft font subdir-
ectory the first time it is loaded and activated. IF you RARELY add
new fonts to your system you can speed this scan up with a new feature.
This feature lets you save a complete library of soft font information
and then read this information (instead of scanning for fonts) when the
program is first activated. Follow the steps below to use this feature.
First load TSR Download into memory, activate it, and let it scan your
font subdirectories. When the window shows a complete font list hit
the new "Z" option to save the font library. TSR Download will ask you
for a library name. Answer with any valid 8 character DOS file name,
with no file name extension or path. TSR Download will then save the
complete list of soft fonts it has found in a library file under the
file name you entered. Now all you have to do is tell TSR Download this
file name when you first load the program into memory, as follows:
dl /library
For example, suppose you load TSR Download, activate it, and let it scan
for soft fonts. Now hit "Z", and then enter "MASTER" when asked for a
library name. You can use TSR Download for the rest of the day in the
normal way. However, the next day when you go to load TSR Download into
memory type:
dl /master
When you activate TSR Download with the hot key you will notice that the
program no longer scans for fonts initially. Instead, it reads the lib-
rary of font information you saved the previous day. Reading a library
is MUCH faster than scanning for soft fonts. The DRAWBACK to this
feature is that if you add extra fonts or remove some from you font sub-
directories TSR Download won't know! (You can always let TSR Download
scan for soft fonts again and save a new library of fonts.)
WARNING! if you save a library of your fonts NEVER try and use that same
library if you change the colors of TSR Download with SETCOLOR. If you
change colors for TSR Download please resave the master font library.
4) A number of programs select soft fonts by their ID number. These
programs include Windows and Ventura Publisher. While you can use TSR
Download to assign an ID number and then send an individual soft font,
this process is quite tedious for downloading more than a single font.
This version of TSR Download offers a new way of assigning soft font
ID numbers. You can now send a list of fonts to your printer automati-
cally assigning each soft font a specific ID number. To do this, you
must first create a soft font list file. Just mark the fonts you want
to download all at once and create a list file. Now leave TSR Download
and using an ASCII text editor, edit the list file. (The list file is
saved in the primary soft font subdirectory and ends with the file name
extension ".LST".) Place a comma after each soft font file name and
follow this with the ID number you want to assign to the font. A typical
list file might look as follows:
hv100rpn.usp
tr120bpn.usp
uv180bpn.usp
If you want to assign ID number 21 to the Helv font, 34 to the Roman
font, and 3 to the University font change the file as follows:
hv100rpn.usp,21
tr120bpn.usp,34
uv180bpn.usp,3
TSR Download will now assign the ID numbers you specified each time
this list file is used to send font to the printer.
5) TSR Download lets you send a file to the printer from the Printer
Control menu. While creating a printer control file is easy, we have
put together a set of common printer control functions you might like
to use. To use a function, just go to the Printer Control menu <P>,
move to the last entry <End>, and hit <enter>. Type the name of one of
the files listed below:
SAMPLE - If you first download a soft font with ID 1, sending SAMPLE
to your printer will print a sample sheet of the font auto-
matically.
MEDIUM - Switch to a medium weight font now.
BOLD - Switch to a bold font now.
ASCII - Select the US ASCII symbol set.
PC8 - Select the PC-8 symbol set.
ROMAN8 - Select the Roman-8 symbol set.
LEGAL - Switch to legal paper size.
LETTER - Switch to letter paper size.
2COPIES - 2 copies of everything will be printed from now on.
5COPIES - 5 copies of everything will be printed from now on.
10COPIES - 10 copies of everything will be printed from now on.
MANUAL - Switch to manual feed.
TRAYFEED - Switch to tray feed.
