┌───────────────────────┐ Welcome to SoftShop. With this program
│ ┌─────────────────────┴┐ and the files that go with it, you can cre-
│ │ SoftShop (c) 1992 │ ate, view, and print ASCII info files on
└─┤ Computer SoftShop │ disk, for your own use, or for sending to
└──────────────────────┘ people who request information from you. The
program was written with mail-order vendors
of Shareware and Public Domain Software in mind, but it's a good program
for almost any type of information. Among the people who might find Soft-
Shop useful are software or hardware vendors, book sellers, club member-
ship recruiters, donation seekers; anyone who can use a menu program of
this type to present ASCII information to people to view the files with.
Among the best features of SoftShop are being able to self-define up to
6 Horizontal Menu Options and 54 Vertical Menu Options, creating your own
information box in the Main Menu to highlight your company name or other
message, data encryption, letting users choose Menu Options with only a
few keystrokes, scroll through files with Page Up/Dn, Home/End keys, and
arrow keys, and also being able to print any of the Menu Options.
┌─────────────────┐ I can't under any circumstances be liable for
│ ┌───────────────┴┐ either incidental or consequential damages result-
└─┤ Disclaimer │ ing from the use, or the inability to use this
└────────────────┘ program, it's related files, or this documentation
properly. And because of the nature of the Share-
ware distribution channel, I cannot be responsible for errors or defects
in the program or documentation. I assure you that I've done everything I
could to make SoftShop as safe and as error-free as possible prior to re-
lease, but unfortunately, you'll still have to use it at your own risk.
┌───────────────────────┐ The copying and distribution of SoftShop
│ ┌─────────────────────┴┐ for evaluation is encouraged. However, to
└─┤ Copying SoftShop │ distribute SoftShop with your information
└──────────────────────┘ files, or to use it for more than 30 days,
you must first register by sending a payment
to the author. SoftShop is distributed as Shareware, which means that it
cannot be used for any purpose (after the evaluation period) without reg-
istering first. Any software vendor who wishes to distribute SoftShop can
do so, as long as they don't charge for anything other than duplication
and associated costs, and that they inform me of the version they are dis-
tributing. Without notification, SoftShop cannot be distributed.
┌───────────────────┐ SoftShop requires at a minimum:
│ ┌─────────────────┴┐
└─┤ Requirements │ - IBM PC/XT/AT or Compatible
└──────────────────┘ - 165K Ram and 1 Disk Drive
- MS-DOS 2.1 or Higher (or equivalent)
- Any video monitor
SoftShop checks for a monochrome monitor attached, and if found, will
automatically change to black & white, so that it'll work on any monitor.
In order to change any of the files SoftShop uses, you'll need either a
Screen Editor (for short Menu Option Files and Data Files) or a Word Pro-
cessor (for long Menu Option Files and Data Files) that saves files in
ASCII format.
┌───────────────────┐ SoftShop can have up to 6 Horizontal Options,
│ ┌─────────────────┴┐ below each of which can be up to 9 Vertical Menu
└─┤ Menu Options │ Options, for a total of 54 Vertical Options that
└──────────────────┘ you can define yourself. SoftShop will automat-
ically put a space before each Horizontal Option
that you enter, and the only limitation here is that the total length of
all Horizontal Options cannot exceed 71 characters, including any spaces
you put before characters (such as " Option1") and the spaces SoftShop
adds to the front of each Option. When entering Vertical Options, they
must be a certain length, depending on how long the Horizontal Option is
for that set of Vertical Options, and each cannot be more than 74 charact-
ers long. Hopefully this won't hurt the effectiveness of SoftShop in any
way. All the names I use are within this range.
To create your own Menu Options, simply edit the file SOFTSHOP.DEF,
entering on each line EXACTLY what you want it to be. SoftShop reads in 1
line at a time and whatever you have on each line, including spaces before
words or blank lines (except the spaces separating Option sets), is turned
into a Menu Option. SoftShop is finished with the Menu Option line when it
reads the last character on the line, and it's finished with the file when
it reaches the end of the file, OR comes to the final maximum line that's
allowed (currently 70).
Example of Menu Option File
----------------------------
Here's an example of what the SOFTSHOP.DEF file might look like with 6
Horizontal Menu Options and various Vertical Menu Options. You can also
print the file SOFTSHOP.DEF. And remember, each Horizontal Option can have
up to 9 Vertical Options.

┌─────────────┐ When you hit the F1 key from the Main Menu, Soft-
│ ┌───────────┴┐ Shop will present the user with the version number and
└─┤ F1 Key │ author information. This is the only thing users will
└────────────┘ see about the SoftShop program. If you want, you can
even rename the SoftShop EXE file.
┌─────────────────┐ When you edit Menu Option files to create your
│ ┌───────────────┴┐ own Menu Options, you'll also have a corresponding
└─┤ Data Files │ Data File to edit or create for each Vertical Menu
└────────────────┘ Option that you have. This just means that you'll
have to enter your own information files (like
this file if you're viewing it from within SoftShop). The filenames for
these files are related to the Horizontal Menu Option that it's for. All
of them begin with "MENU" and end in 2 numbers (MENUxx) depending on which
set of Vertical Options they're for.

There are 2 limitations in writing each Data File. Just like other pro-
gram files, the Data Files shouldn't have more than 75 characters in each
line (anything after the 75th character will be ignored) and no more than
2000 lines in each file (anything over this will be ignored and the last
line will be all asterisks).
WARNING: DO NOT change these filenames. SoftShop will not recognize other
names not listed above, and will only give you an error message if it can-
not find one of them! If you happen to delete a file, you must create ano-
ther file with the same name if you want to use it in SoftShop. Also, each
Data file that you use must be at least 17 lines long or SoftShop will not
work right (I don't think this will be a problem though).
┌────────────────┐ SoftShop will allow you to create your own per-
│ ┌──────────────┴┐ sonalized message on the Main Menu screen, letting
└─┤ Info File │ you keep some type of information (like company
└───────────────┘ name and type of business) in front of users when-
ever they aren't viewing or printing a file. This
file is called INFO and can't be more than 3 lines in length, with each
line being 56 characters or less. SoftShop will also automatically center
each line it reads in from this file when it's printed to the screen.
┌──────────────────────┐ Customized background screens (red brick
│ ┌────────────────────┴┐ wall you see in the Shareware version) are
└─┤ SoftShop Screen │ available when you register for an additional
└─────────────────────┘ fee. Screens (25 lines down by 80 across) can
contain any viewable ASCII characters, like
boxes, lines, letters, numbers, or keyboard keys, with the following col-
ors as foreground and background colors. Only one foreground and one back-
ground color can be used. Please include this information when you call or
write.
Background Colors:
------------------
Black, Dark Blue, Dark Green, Cyan, Dark Red, Magenta, Brown, or Light
White.
Foreground Colors:
------------------
Black, Dark Blue, Dark Green, Cyan, Drak Red, Magenta, Brown, Light White,
Gray, Light Blue, Light Green, Light Cyan, Light Red, Light Magenta, Yel-
low, or High Intensity White.
┌─────────────────────┐ With v2.5, Data encryption was added, and
│ ┌───────────────────┴┐ available to registered users for an addition-
└─┤ Data Encryption │ al fee. With this option you receive NCRYPT, a
└────────────────────┘ special encrypting program that converts any
ASCII MENUxx files to special encrypted files
that SoftShop can read (it reads either ASCII or special encrypted files).
If you'd like to see an example of an encrypted file, just type any MENU
files from MENU11 to MENU18. These files are all encrypted by NCRYPT, but
are viewable from within SoftShop.
┌──────────────────┐ To register SoftShop, print out the registrat-
│ ┌────────────────┴┐ ion form at the DOS prompt (file MENU19) or from
└─┤ Registering │ within SoftShop, fill it out and mark the options
└─────────────────┘ you want, then mail it to the address listed on
the order form. You'll receive the latest version
on 5.25" or 3.5" disk (specify which) with your name on the F1 key screen,
and without the Shareware screen, unlimited phone or mail support (at your
expense), future release notices, and depending on the options requested,
a customized background screen, and NCRYPT for protecting your data files.
You'll also receive an additional disk containing my on-disk catalog of
Shareware & Public Domain software featuring an advanced version of Soft-
Shop as its menu system (you can receive a catalog without registering by
sending $1, which is refundable). This catalog features many of the BEST
Shareware programs on the market.
┌──────────────────────────────┐ If you happen to run into any
│ ┌────────────────────────────┴┐ problems with SoftShop, such as find-
└─┤ Suggestions or Problems │ ing errors that I missed before re-
└─────────────────────────────┘ lease, please let me know if you can.
I'll be happy to send you the next
corrected version if you'll include $1 for postage and handling, and ...
THANKS for trying SoftShop!
