Features
--------
│ Send complex setup strings to HP Laserjet (or compatible) using plain
English commands.
│ Network and multitasking support.
│ No special knowledge of printer setup strings required.
│ Not copy protected.
Overview
--------
LASERWAG was designed with the average user in mind. "Power Users" who
enjoy typing in mile-long setup strings will find this program "boring",
as it is now possible to communicate with the HP Laserjet (or compatible)
in plain English. The following pages contain information which will help
you to use both this program and the Laserjet more effectively, so please
take a few moments to read (or at least skim !) them.
To select an item from the menu, use the up or down arrow keys to
highlight the item, then press Enter [RETURN]. Alternatively, you may
press the number or letter corresponding to that item (0-9, A,T, or U).
If you select an incorrect item, pressing Escape [ESC] takes you back to
the previous menu. Escape [ESC] will also exit the program. IMPORTANT:
Please note that those items requiring numerical input (Page Length and
Margins) MUST have a number input. Escape will NOT exit you from these
selections (We're working on it !).
It is NOT necessary to re-select every item when changing one or two
characteristics. For example, to change from Portrait, Legal paper, 10.00
Pitch to Landscape, Legal paper, 10.00 Pitch, simply select "Orientation,
Landscape" from within LASERWAG. The previously selected paper size and
pitch remain unchanged. NOTE: This may not be true if your printer is on
a network, as someone may reset the printer between your print jobs.

Installing LASERWAG
-------------------
The following command will copy LASERWAG to the DOS directory of your hard
disk:
COPY A:LW.EXE C:\DOS\LW.EXE
If LASERWAG is in your B: drive, or your DOS directory is on a disk drive
other than C:, you will need to modify the above command.
If your AUTOEXEC.BAT file does not have a path command already set up to
the DOS directory, include the following command:
PATH=C:\DOS
To start LASERWAG, simply type LW. To exit the program, press escape.
Lotus 1-2-3 Usage
-----------------
When using Lotus 1-2-3 (1A to 2.1) with the HP Laserjet, be sure that the
default printer name is set up as "Unspecified". The /Worksheet Global
Default Printer Name command is used from within Lotus for this purpose.
For convenience sake, you should also press Update to update the Global
Configuration.
To use LASERWAG while in Lotus, return to DOS by using the /System
command. Typing LW will start LASERWAG, and Escape [ESC] will exit
LASERWAG. Typing Exit and pressing Return [ENTER] will return you to
Lotus.
NOTE: Any setup string information contained with Lotus will override the
LASERWAG setting. To insure that there are no setup strings, press /Print
Printer Options Setup [ESC] [ENTER]. This will clear the previously-
entered setup string information (if any).

LASERWAG Menu Choices
---------------------
Lines/Inch
----------
This option sets the number of lines printed per vertical inch of paper.
In selecting the various options, the number of 1/48th inch increments
between rows printed is either increased or decreased. The factory default
setting is 6 lines per inch.
Margins
-------
Clear Margins
-------------
This command resets the left and right margins to the factory default
settings. The left margin is set to 0, and the right margin is set to
the right edge of the logical page.
Left Margin
-----------
This command sets the left margin to the left edge of the specified
column. The default left margin is 0. You may enter a number between 1
and the current right margin. Any number which exceeds the current right
margin setting will be ignored by the printer.
Right Margin
------------
This command sets the right margin to the right edge of the specified
column. The default right margin is the right edge of the logical page.
If you enter a number which is less than the left margin, the margin
setting will be ignored by the printer.

Page 5
Orientation
-----------
Orientation refers to the direction of print with respect to the page. The
factory default orientation is portrait. Portrait orientation means that
the printer is printing across the width of a page (vertical). Landscape
means that the printer is printing across the length of a page
(horizontal).
Page Length
-----------
The page length command is another way to set the page size. It is
recommended that the page size selection be made from the menu. If you
wish to use this feature, calculate the lines per page by multiplying the
line spacing by the length of the page. (For example: The page length for
letter paper at 6 lines-per-inch would be 66, or 11" x 6 lines/inch)
Page Size
---------
This command selects one of the available page sizes. If the page size
selected is different from that of the currently installed paper tray, a
display message will ask you to change trays. You may press the CONTINUE
button on the Laserjet II, top allow you to use a different size page than
that requested, but it probably will not be formatted correctly.
Pitch
-----
Pitch describes the number of characters printed in a horizontal inch.
Therefore, the larger the pitch, the smaller the print. Note that pitch
applies only to fixed space fonts (such as Courier), as the number of
characters per inch varies for proportional fonts.
Reset Printer
-------------
This selection will reset the printer to its default settings. If the
laser printer is being shared by several users in a networking
environment, it is recommended that this command be selected first to
clear out any unwanted settings.

Spacing
-------
Fonts are either fixed or proportionally spaced. Fixed-spaced fonts are
those for which the inter-character spacing is constant. In
proportionally-spaced fonts, the inter-character spacing varies. When
proportional spacing is specified and a proportionally-spaced font is not
available, a fixed pitch font with the current pitch specifications will
be selected by the printer. The factory default spacing is fixed.
Stroke Weight
-------------
This command sets the thickness of the font that is printed. The factory
default setting is medium stroke weight. If the stroke weight you select
is unavailable, the printer will assign the next thickest stroke weight.
If none is available, the next thinnest stroke weight is selected.
Style
-----
This command selects either upright or italic font style. The factory
default style is upright. If Italic is not available, this command is
ignored by the printer.
Typeface
--------
Typeface is the name given to graphics symbols having common design
features (ie. the design of the font). It should be noted that the
typeface which is selected must be available, or this command is ignored
by the printer.
Underline
---------
This command controls automatic text underlining. Once underlining has
been selected, an underline will be drawn under any text or positive
horizontal cursor movements that the printer receives. The Laserjet series
II always prints a three dot thick underline. The factory default is
underlining off.
