Version 2.0 (February 29, 1992)
THANK YOU
for trying this program. It was suggested to me by a user of
another program I wrote called DJLOPE, an envelope printing program
and database which can be found in HPPER Library 5 of CompuServe.
Included with this program are the following files:
* DJCHECK.EXE The executable program file
* CINSTALL.EXE The installation and configuration program
* CHEKGRID.EXE A program to print a template for configuring
the DJCHECK program
* README.DJC This file you are now reading
* DJCHECK.ICO A Windows 3.x icon
* DJCHECK.PIF A Windows 3.x Program Information File
If you are using a hard disk, copy the above files to the hard disk
before you begin. Creating a sudirectory called DJCHECK is suggested
for keeping the files together. If you are using a floppy disk, place
the disk containing the above files in Drive A or B and log on to that
drive before proceeding. Do not use a write protect tab on the floppy,
as additional files will be created and updated by the program.
I suggest you copy this file to the printer before beginning the
installation process.
To print this file, type COPY README.DJC LPT1: at the command line to
send this file to the printer.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
You will need a blank check to use for placing the various printed
items accurately. You won't need to write or print on the check to
configure the program. You will also need a straight edge for measuring.
First, print the check placement grid by typing CHEKGRID at the command
line. This will produce a grid on a sheet of paper (use white paper,
you'll see why in a moment) that you will use to place the various
printed lines on your check properly. You will need to do this only
one time, as your configuration will be saved in a file used by the
DJCHECK program.
Begin by placing the grid over your blank check. You might want to
tape the check to the back of the grid paper in the proper position so
it doesn't move. If your check size varies from the size of the grid
produced by the CHEKGRID program, you should CENTER the check on the
grid (the center of the grid is marked with a dotted vertical line) and
line up the top edge of the check with the top of the grid.
In the picture below, you will see a representation (not to scale) of a
check and the locations you will mark on the grid paper. Hold the grid
and the check up to a light (I know this is inconvenient, but you'll
only have to do it once!) and put a small 'X' or dot on the grid that
correspond to the placement of the *'s on the picture below. These are
to set the printing position for the first character of each field.

When you've finished, your grid should have five (5) X's on it
corresponding to the asterisks as follows:

NUMERIC DOLLARS

MEMO
Next, using the straight edge, record the following information in the
blanks on the printed form you just printed. These will be entered in
the CINSTALL program shortly.
Lay the straight edge horizontally across the grid aligning it with the
DATE mark you made and with the left and right ROW numbers on the grid.
Look over to the left at the ROW number and write it on the printed
form. Then lay the straight edge vertically on the grid and align it
with the DATE mark and with the top and bottom COLUMN numbers on the
grid. Look up or down to the COLUMN number and record it below.
Follow the same procedure for the other fields.
NOTE: Be sure to record the ROW first, then the COLUMN.
(The ROWS are the vertical numbers on the left,
COLUMNS below, as labeled.) Very unpredictable
results could occur otherwise!
Also, start at the top and work down. Don't skip
around. There's no telling what will happen if you do.
You are finished with the hard part!
Now, at the command line type CINSTALL. You will be prompted to enter
the information you just recorded above, so have it handy.
Once you have run the CINSTALL program, the DJCHECK program should
align the printing on your checks accurately.
If you need to make any adjustments, just run CINSTALL again, and enter
the new information. To move any print placement to the left, use a
LOWER column number. To move to the right, use a HIGHER column number.
To move the print position UP, use a LOWER row number. To move the
print position DOWN, use a higher row number.
PRINTING CHECKS WITH DJCHECK
To run the program, type DJCHECK at the DOS prompt. The first time you
run the program, it will prompt you for your name and address (three
lines), which will then appear on the screen but will not print on your
check. The program will create a RETURN.ADR file on your disk
containing this information. To change your return address file, edit
it with any ASCII text editor, or delete the file at a DOS prompt, and
rerun the DJCHECK program, typing in the new information.
You will be prompted for a beginning balance, or ENTER for none. If you
want DJCHECK to keep track of your balance for you while you print
several checks, enter your current check book balance at this prompt,
then press ENTER. If you prefer, just press enter at the prompt, and
the program will begin with a balance of $0.00. In this case, when you
are finished printing checks the last balance (e.g. $-300.00) will
indicate the total dollar amount you have written checks for during
this session.
Pressing the ESCAPE key at any check field prompt will cause the
program to abort and return you to DOS.
You will be prompted for a check number. This, too, will not print on
your check, but will be saved in a disk file for later reference.
When you are prompted for the date, pressing ENTER will supply the
system (computer's) date, otherwise, type the month and day you wish to
appear on the check (up to 8 characters).
Type in the PAYEE (up to 50 characters) and press ENTER.
Type in the DOLLAR AMOUNT in numerals. Do not type a dollar sign ($)
or comma in this field. You may enter an amount up to 999999.99. The
English word equivalent of the dollar amount will be entered for you.
Type in the FOR item when prompted (up to 25 characters) or press ENTER
to skip.
If you have entered all the information and it is correct, press Y,
otherwise press N to re-enter the information for the check.
If you want the check printed, answer the next prompt with a Y. You
will be prompted to insert a blank check face down on the envelope
feeder tray. Center it between the guides, and push the check forward
until it is snug against the rollers. Then load the check into the
printer (just like an envelope) by pressing the TWO load keys on the
control panel. Confirm that the check is pulled straight into the
printer by the rollers before continuing. If not, press the FF
(formfeed) key, RESET the printer, and load the check again.
Press any key to print the check.
If you want to print another check, answer the next prompt with a Y.
If you want to exit the program, answer N, and you will be asked if you
want to print out a record of the checks you have entered. Answer Y to
print a list of the checks you have entered this session on your regular
paper supply, any other key to exit.
A record of your transactions will be stored automatically in a file
(created by the program) called CHECK.LOG, which is an ASCII text file
and can be edited and printed in any word processor.
One last word of advice: Don't forget to SIGN your checks.
RUNNING DJCHECK FROM WINDOWS 3.x
DJCHECK will run as a DOS application from MicroSoft Windows 3.x.
Copy the DJCHECK.EXE, DJCHECK.ICO and DJCHECK.PIF files to the
subdirectory containing your Windows files.
Start Windows. Highlight the Main program group in Program Manager.
To install the program as a DOS application running under Windows,
choose New from the File menu of Program Manager. Select Item.
Type DJCHECK as the title of the application, and DJCHECK.PIF as
the command file (To run the program as a full screen application,
type [path]DJCHECK.EXE instead). Then select Change Icon...
and type DJCHECK.ICO for the icon name. Click on OK, and the
DJCHECK icon should appear in your Main program group. Double
click on the DJCHECK icon in Program Manager to use the program.

Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it.
If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
register. Individual programs differ on details -- some request registration
while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the
software to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated
below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are
good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute
the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example,
some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may
copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find
software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or
Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you
can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also.
Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
Users of DJCHECK must accept this disclaimer of warranty: "DJCHECK is
supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied,
including, without limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of
fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct
or consequential, which may result from the use of DJCHECK."
DJCHECK is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the user
for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do not
give it away altered or as part of another system. The essence of "user-
supported" software is to provide personal computer users with quality
software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. If you find this program useful and find
that you are using DJCHECK and continue to use DJCHECK after a reasonable
trial period, you must make a registration payment of $14.95 to Jerry M.
Johnson. The $14.95 registration fee will license one copy for use on any
one computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like a book.
An example is that this software may be used by any number of people and
may be freely moved from one computer location to another, so long as
there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it's being
used at another. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons
at the same time.
Commercial users of DJCHECK must register and pay for their copies of
DJCHECK within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn. Site-
License arrangements may be made by contacting Jerry M. Johnson.
Anyone distributing DJCHECK for any kind of remuneration must first contact
Jerry M. Johnson at the address below for authorization. This authorization
will be automatically granted to distributors recognized by the Association
of Shareware Professionals as adhering to its guidelines for shareware
distributors, and such distributors may begin offering DJCHECK immediately
(However Jerry M. Johnson must still be advised so that the distributor
can be kept up-to-date with the latest version of DJCHECK.).
You are encouraged to pass a copy of DJCHECK along to your friends for
evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they find that
they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of the latest
version of DJCHECK, and will be notified of future enhancements.

(ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle works for you.
If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related problem with an ASP member
by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman
can help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not
provide technical support for members' products. Please write to the ASP
Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe
message via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.
