  6. A Pixel-based, Monospace, IBM-PC character set, Data Terminal Screen Font.

  9. General Description
  10. -------------------
  11. Video Terminal Screen was developed for lack of any available monospaced font,
  12. commercial, share-ware, or otherwise; that resembled characters of a data
  13. terminal or PC screen in text mode. In desperation, I took the advice of a
  14. fellow DTP'er, picked up a copy of CorelDRAW!, and produced my own.

  17. The character set is monospaced, so that text captured from an actual data
  18. session can be imported directly into a document with minimal touch up. It also
  19. includes the full IBM character set (above ASCII 32) so that line and box
  20. drawing is possible, although you may have to play around with PostScript
  21. character mapping to access the upper 128 characters. Video Terminal Screen was
  22. designed for use as a text font for technical documents such as software
  23. programming manuals.

  26. Background Information
  27. ----------------------
  28. Video Terminal Screen is based on the "standard" 8x16 pixel character set of
  29. EGA/VGA card character generators. Thanks to a great share-ware utility
  30. called FONTEDIT, I didn't have to squint with a magnifying glass to design
  31. each character. For the sake of simplicity and memory consumption, each
  32. character is an outline of the EGA/VGA pixel pattern. Each pixel is a simple
  33. square. Thus, each of the outlines is a straight-line affair; no fancy curve
  34. outlines here.

  36. Typical of monospaced fonts, Video Terminal Screen is somewhat short and
  37. "squatty." To produce printed type at the standard 10 pitch size, (roughly 12
  38. points, theoretically) size the font at 13.7 points.
  39.  
  40. The Adobe Type 1 version is unhinted, due to the current limitations of Corel's
  41. WfnBoss version 2.01p. It also is short 13 more characters, namely ASCII 127,
  42. 132, 150, 151, 153-160, and 175. This is due to a quirk of Corel's standard
  43. character set, which doesn't include these characters. Although they may exist
  44. in the .WFN file, WfnBoss doesn't assign character names to the outlines. One
  45. other tidbit, Corel's WfnBoss calls the character at ASCII 149 (IBM-PC's ograve
  46. character) "fraction" whereas Adobe uses the name "fractionbar". I'm not sure
  47. if this is intentional on Corel's part or merely an oversight. If you happen to
  48. need the ograve character, you may have to modify your application's PostScript
  49. encoding vectors before you can access it.

  51. The VIDEO222.WFN file is included for Corel users, in hopes that WfnBoss may
  52. someday be able to support a full character set, and/or provide hinting for
  53. Type 1 files. VIDEO.WFN is the file used by WfnBoss to create the Type 1 files,
  54. and the 13 characters mentioned above were deleted from it to eliminate a nasty
  55. bug with Windows' Adobe Type Manager.

  57. Speaking of hinting, I tried using Tom Truong's CORELHNT program in Lib 6, but
  58. it turned the font into Courier (at least that's what my printer spit out.) As
  59. is though, it prints clearly on my H-P LaserJet III with the H-P PostScript
  60. cartridge, at 10 points on up. Anyone who wishes to run it through Fontographer
  61. or something to add hinting is welcome to do so.

  68. copyrighted software. This font is Share-Ware software, it is not released to
  69. the Public Domain. The original software consists of the following six files:

  72.    VIDEO222.WFN  -  CorelDRAW! font file with 222 character set.
  73.    VIDEON__.PFB  -  Adobe Type 1 font file with 209 character set.

  75.    VIDEON__.PFM  -  Adobe Type Manager font metrics file.

  78. This software may be freely copied and distributed, provided that:

  96. font in non-commercial (not-for-profit) applications, for no more than thirty

  100. nominal, one-time fee of $5.00 U.S. Each license grants permission to install
  101. Video Terminal Screen on up to two low resolution printers (600dpi or lower)
