- Configuration Files
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- A configuration file lets you customize the V:Log
- working environment. When a configuration
- file is loaded, the settings in the file alter
- characteristics of the program, such as sound
- generation, video display attributes, printing, and so
- on.
-
- A default file extension of ".CFG" is used for
- configuration files. This is only a naming convention.
- No particular file name or extension is required.
-
- There are two ways to use a configuration file:
-
- ■ When the V:Log program starts up, it
- looks in the current working
- directory (the active drive /
- directory) for a file named
- "VL.CFG". If this file is found,
- it is automatically used to
- configure the program.
-
- ■ You can also load a configuration
- file while using V:Log. Select
- "Load CFG", in the Utilities Menu.
- Select the configuration file and
- press [ENTER]. The settings in
- the file will be made the active
- settings.
-
-
- Creating Configuration Files
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- Configuration files are created with the program named
- "VLCONFIG.EXE".
-
- Type "vlconfig" [ENTER] at the DOS prompt. If
- a configuration file named "VL.CFG" is in the current
- directory, it will be loaded. The settings in this
- file will be displayed, allowing you to alter an
- existing file instead of starting 'from scratch'.
-
- You can also load a configuration file with a name other
- than "VL.CFG". This process is described below.
-
-
- Main VLCONFIG Menu
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- The following menu selections are available in the main
- menu in VLCONFIG:
-
- Video ................. Takes you to a mock V:Log screen,
- and the Video menu (described below).
-
- Sound ................. Turns sound (beeps and other audio
- warnings) on or off.
-
-
- Page 2 - Configuration Program
- End-of-line ........... Sets the end-of-line characters used when
- printing. For most printers, the default
- Carriage Return (CR) character, followed by a
- Line Feed (LF) character, produces
- satisfactory printing. Some printers,
- however, automatically perform a Line Feed
- whenever a Carriage Return is sent.
-
- The following sub-menu will appear:
-
- CR
- LF
- CR/LF
- Print test
- ESCape
-
- If you have trouble printing, select the
- "Print test" operation in the submenu. This
- will print out a sample page using each of the
- end-of-line combinations.
-
- Page mode ............. Selects either continuous printing, or pausing
- at the end of each page to allow you to insert
- more paper.
-
- Lines/page ............ Sets the number of lines per page. The
- default value is 66. The number of lines
- includes any 'header' lines (see next menu
- selection). You can enter any number from 1
- to 99.
-
- Format ................ Selects the 'header' information which will be
- printed whenever you print a file, partial
- file or Search Results. The header choices
- include page numbers, the current date, the
- current time, and the file name being printed.
- You can choose to include all, none, or any
- combination of these choices.
-
- Shown below is a sample of a printout, with
- all of the possible header information
- included:
-
- ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- FILE: CAT_DOG.LOG page 1
- DATE: 1/1/92 TIME: 14:00
-
- 1 15:36:00:00 CU Terrier eating.
- 15:38:00:00 -00:02:00:00- V A2
- 2 15:38:10:00 MS ZI stacks of dog food bags.

- Page 3 - Configuration Program
- Configure printer ..... Brings up the printer configuration menu
- (see below).
-
- Auto hour ............. Set the Auto Hour to either ON or OFF. You
- will be able to change this from within VL,
- but the value in the configuration file will
- be used when the file is loaded.
-
-
- Video Menu
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- When you select "Video" from the main VLCONFIG Menu, a
- mock V:Log screen will appear, with the
- following menu in the center of the screen:
-
-
- Mono .................. Selects monochrome display 'colors'.
-
- CGA ................... Selects the default color pallette for CGA
- adapters.
-
- EGA ................... Selects the default color pallette for EGA
- adapters.
-
- + SnowCheck ........... Forces snow checking to be used, no matter
- what the installed video adapter card.
-
- - SnowCheck ........... Forces snow checking to be disabled, no matter
- what the installed video adapter card.
-
- Snow test ............. Use this operation to test whether snow
- checking should be enabled on your PC. When
- you select "Snow test", continuous writing of
- lines to the monitor will begin. Look closely
- at the monitor. If there are spots, speckles
- or sparkles that randomly occur, you should
- turn snow checking ON. The screen will not be
- updated as quickly, but the interference
- ("snow") will be reduced.
-
- ESCape ................ Returns you to the Main VLCONFIG Menu.
-
-
- Printer Configuration Menu
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- When "Configure printer" is selected from the main
- menu, the following menu selections will appear.
- Position the hilite bar on the selection you wish to
- change, then press [ENTER] until the desired setting
- appears.
-
- If possible, you should use one of the parallel or
- serial printer settings with your printer. Because
- DOS print services are marginal at best, select the
- "DOS default" only if no others work. Print errors
- using this setting are likely to lock up the computer
- rather than providing an error message and aborting.
-
-
- Page 4 - Configuration Program
- With a parallel printer or DOS default, the remaining
- settings (baud rate, stop bits, etc.) are immaterial.
-
- The "Test Printer" menu selection will print out a copy
- of the current printer settings, to the currently
- selected printer.

- VLCONFIG screen. The choices appear along the bottom
- of the screen:
-

- Version 2 Configuration Files
- ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
- V:Log configuration files created with earlier versions
- of VLCONFIG (before version 3.0) cannot be used directly
- with V:Log. However, VLCONFIG will load those
- earlier files. To use an older CFG file, load it into
- VLCONFIG, check all settings, then save the file. It
- will automatically be saved as a version 3.0
- configuration file, which can be used with V:Log.
