- GENERAL INFORMATION & SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
-
- This program will run on any system, using DOS 2.0 or higher and having a
- minimum of 512k FREE RAM (640k is recommended). A color monitor is best. A
- hard drive is STRONGLY recommended, as the performance is greatly improved
- over using a floppy drive. Config.sys must be set to minimum Files=30 and
- buffers=20.
-
- When you run the self extracting file "stamps.exe", you should have the
- following files
-
- stamptrx.exe stamps.man
-
- The first time the program is run, it will create 11 additional files:
-
- Wrldstmp.Dat Wrldstmp.K03 Wrldstmp.K05
- Wrldstmp.K01 Wrldstmp.K04 Wrldstmp.Mem
- Wrldstmp.K02 Stampco.Dat Stampco.K01
- Stampgrd.dat Stampgrd.K01
-
- At most stages of the program, you will see "F-1 = HELP" in the upper left
- hand corner of the form or table on the screen. If this notice is present,
- you can press the F-1 key to access the on-line help for that function.
- To get out of any option, press the ESCAPE key until you get back to where
- you want to be. Pressing CONTROL and ESCAPE will immediately take you back
- to the last menu screen.
-
- All printouts are formatted for 8.5 x 11 fanfold (continous) paper. All
- printing routines were tested on a Panasonic 1124 printer in EPSON mode and
- should work on most compatible printers.
-
- USING STAMPTRAX
-
- Type the command "stamptrx" and press ENTER.
-
- On accessing the Main menu screen, you will find the following options:
-
- 1) Open the World Stamp Catalog
- 2) View/Update Country File
- 3) View/Update Grade Codes
- 4) Print the Shareware Registration
- 5) A program quickstart (by pressing F-2)
- 6) Exit (by pressing ESCAPE)
-
- Program options 5 & 6 are accessed by pressing the specified key and are
- self-explanatory. Option 4 will print out a fill the blank SHAREWARE
- registration form on any EPSON compatible printer. Option 1 will access the
- stamp catalog main menu. Option 2 lets you view/edit the lookup tables for
- the countries issuing stamps in your collection and option 3 lets you
- view/edit the condition grading codes. To choose options 1 - 4, simply use
- the up or down arrow keys to HIGHLIGHT the choice and press the ENTER key to
- select it.
-
- When you open the stamp catalog, you will see the main menu. You now have
- the following options available:
-
- Look for stamp by Country of Stamp Issue
- " Scott Number
- " Year of Stamp Issue
- " Denomination of Stamps
- Make Printed Reports
-
-
-
- GETTING STARTED:
-
- To add a stamp to the catalog, highlight any of the four LOOK FOR options &
- press ENTER. Since there will be no stamps to read the first time you open
- the catalog, the program will automatically go to the stamp information form.
- Simply enter the information in the proper fields on the form. You must enter
- the following: the issuing COUNTRY, the stamp DENOMINATION, the YEAR of
- issue, the description of the stamp FACE, the GRADE or condition of the
- stamp, and the LOCATION where you have the stamp filed or stored.
- Entering the information:
-
- COUNTRY: The country which issued the stamp. You must enter the names
- in the country file look up table before you can enter them into the
- stamp information form. If you type a country name not in the lookup
- table or leave the field blank and press ENTER, the program will
- automatically go to the lookup table. You must choose from the countries
- already listed or add a new country name to use. (To enter a new name,
- press the INSERT key, type the information into the space provided, and
- press ENTER to save the new name to the table.) Use the up and down
- arrow keys to HIGHLIGHT the correct country name and press ENTER to
- import it to the Country field of the coin information form.
-
- DENOMINATION: Enter the FACE value of the stamp. Use what ever format
- you wish, just be consistent.
-
- SCOTT NUMBER: Enter the number assigned to this stamp in the SCOTT
- catalog.
-
- YEAR: Enter the year that the stamp was issued and press ENTER.
-
- FACE DESCRIPTION: Enter the information on the face of the stamp.
- (See a stamp collector's catalog for what kind of information to enter
- here.)
-
- PAPER COLOR: Enter the paper color / description. (Again, see a stamp
- collector's catalog for the correct information to enter.)
-
- GRADE: This is the same as stamp condition. A lookup table is available.
- As with the Country field, you can use only the information listed in this
- table. You can add codes to this table by following the same procedure
- given for the Country file look up table.
-
- YEAR BOUGHT: Enter the year that you bought or obtained the stamp and
- press ENTER.
-
- COST: Enter the dollar amount you paid for the stamp and press
- ENTER. If you enter the decimal point in the typed entry, the program
- will automatically place in the amount correctly in the field.
-
- VALUE: This is the current appraised value of the stamp. Enter the
- same as for the cost field. Be sure to enter the date and source of the
- appraisal in the notes field.
-
- LOCATION: This is a 10 position field to record where you have the
- stamp filed or stored. Enter whatever you wish in this field, just as
- long as it makes sense to you. After typing your entry, press ENTER.
-
- NOTES: This is a 360 character field to record any other information
- that you wish to keep on the stamp. Press the ENTER key to save the
- notes information.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- To save the information you have entered on the stamp information form, you
- can press the CONTROL & ENTER keys at any time (provided you have filled in
- all of the required fields) or you can press the ENTER key until you have
- "passed" all of the information fields.
-
- If you make an error,, you can correct it before you press the ENTER key by
- simply using the backspace key. If you have already gone to another field,
- press the up arrow key or the ESCAPE key to back up through the form to the
- field you wish to correct.
-
- If you wish to abort the entire record and have not yet saved it, you can
- press the CONTROL & ESCAPE keys.
-
- After you have completed the first stamp, you will then go to the LOOK FOR
- table you originally selected. To enter another stamp, press the INSERT key
- and enter the new information as outlined above.
-
-
- LOOKING AT YOUR STAMP CATALOG:
-
- Now that you have entered some stamps, you can use the other options on the
- main menu.
-
- The four LOOK FOR options allow you to view your stamps listed alphabetically
- by COUNTRY of issue, numerically by the SCOTT NUMBER, chronologially by YEAR
- of issue, or alphabetically by the DENOMINATION. In each of the options, you
- enter your search criteria in the field at the top of the viewing table. The
- program then highlights the stamp which most closely matches the search
- criteria. (EG: If you search by country, and enter the letter G, the first
- country's name in your stamp file beginning with the letter G will be
- highlighted. As you enter additional letters, your search criteria narrows.)
-
- Each of the LOOK FOR tables displays 5 stamps at a time. Use the up and down
- arrow keys to scroll through the listings a stamp at a time. Use the page up
- and page down keys to scroll a page at a time. If you press the CONTROL and
- the PAGE UP keys together, you go to the first stamp in the list. Pressing
- CONTROL and PAGE DOWN takes you to the last stamp in the list. When you find
- the stamp you are looking for, HIGHLIGHT it and press ENTER. The stamp
- information screen will appear with all of the information currently in file
- for that stamp. You can now change any of the information in the record by
- pressing ENTER until you get to the field to edit, making your changes and
- pressing CONTROL and ENTER to save. By pressing the F-9 key you can print a
- hardcopy of the stamp information. If you did not make any changes to the
- stamp information, pressing the ESCAPE key will exit you back to the LOOK FOR
- listing. The program also displays the number of stamps currently in you
- your catalog in the upper left corner area of each table.
-
-
- DELETING A STAMP:
-
- If you wish to delete a stamp from your catalog, HIGHLIGHT the stamp on any
- of the LOOK FOR listings and press the DELETE key. The information for that
- stamp will be displayed on the stamp information form. If you still wish to
- delete the stamp from your catalog, press ENTER. You can abort the delete
- routine by pressing ESCAPE. CAUTION: once you have deleted a stamp, you can
- not get it back. If you do accidently delete a stamp, you must re-enter it
- the same as a new stamp.
-
-
- MAKING PRINTED REPORTS:
-
- The final option on the World Stamp Catalog menu is for accessing the printed
- reports function. Highlighting this option and pressing ENTER takes you to
- the Printed Reports Option Menu.
-
-
- At this point, you can choose to print your entire stamp catalog file
- alphabetically by COUNTRY or by DENOMINATION, chronologically by YEAR OF
- ISSUE, or by the File or Storage LOCATION. The listings for the entire
- collection will also print the total number of stamps listed in the
- collection and the total value of the stamp collection (based on the dollar
- amounts you have entered in the VALUE field). You can also make printed
- listings for stamps issued by a specific COUNTRY. When you choose the
- specific country option, the Country file lookup table will popup and you
- select the country you wish to print a listing for. The listing for selected
- country is in a format similar to most stamp collector's price guides. This
- makes it easier to check and update the current value of your stamp
- collection. On completing the printed listing, the program returns to the
- last screen you saw. You must press ESCAPE as many times as necessary to get
- back to where you want to be in the catalog program.
-
-
- VIEWING/UPDATING THE COUNTRY AND GRADING FILES (options 2 & 3 of main menu):
-
- The next set of menu options allow you to view and edit the current lookup
- tables for countries issuing the stamps in your collection or the grading
- codes used. While viewing each of these lookup tables, you can select any
- entry to edit (by highlighting it and pressing ENTER), select any entry to
- delete (by highlighting it and pressing DELETE), or add a new entry (by
- pressing the INSERT key, typing the new information in the space provided,
- and pressing ENTER). Thus, you can work on these lookup tables while in the
- stamp information form or directly from the main menu.
-
-
- SHAREWARE Policy and User Registration:
-
- The concept of SHAREWARE is to try a program BEFORE you by it. If you like
- the program and continue to use it beyond a specified period of time, you are
- obligated to register your copy with the author. Since the registration fee
- involved is usually small when compared to comparable commercial programs,
- you can receive quality programs at very reasonable costs. Your registration
- fee also supports the program authors and encourages them to produce more
- quality products.
- STAMPTRAX is distributed as SHAREWARE. You are allowed to use this program
- free of cost for a 21 day trial period. You must register (or license) the
- program if you continue to use it beyond this trial period. During the
- SHAREWARE trial period, you may freely copy and distribute this program;
- provided that the program is intact and in its original form (including all
- SHAREWARE notices), and that no fee is charged for this distribution. Approved
- SHAREWARE vendors may charge a nominal fee to cover their costs of distribution.
- SHAREWARE vendors may also include other documentation and/or files on the disk
- with this program, as long as no STAMPTRAX program files are deleted or
- modified.
- This program, including the manual you are now reading, is copyrighted,
- Neither the SHAREWARE version nor the REGISTERED version may be modified in
- any way without the author's prior written consent.
- On submitting the required $15 (US) registration fee, the author will send
- you a REGISTERED version of the STAMPTRAX program. This REGISTERED version will
- contain the owner's name in the Main menu screen and on the catalog listing
- printouts. You are allowed to make a back up copy of this REGISTERED version,
- but MAY NOT distribute copies of it to others.
