- DISCLAIMER
- ===============================================================================
-
- Use of this program acknowledges this disclaimer of warranty: "This
- program is provided "AS IS" and it is without warranty of any kind
- that it will work correctly in any or all situations. No liability
- shall be assumed for direct or consequential damage caused by the use
- of this software. The only claim the authors make is that there are no
- intentional bugs, viruses or fatal errors in any original copy of the
- program that you received directly from The Sellware Source."
-
- ===============================================================================
- LICENSING AGREEMENT
- ===============================================================================
-
- I've always felt that the normal 10-day or two week TRIAL PERIOD usually
- associated with shareware can be a little too short sometimes. So with
- that in mind feel free to use it for a couple of months and if, after that
- time, you feel it is useful to you we ask that you please register it.
-
- You may freely distribute copies of the shareware version in its UNMODIFIED
- state provided you do not include it in other software packages, with the
- exception of distributing it as part of a bundle of Public Domain or
- shareware programs on a single diskette. In addition you may not charge
- more that $3.50 for copying and/or distributing this program in the absence
- of recognized Users Group guidelines (e.g. ASP - Association of
- Shareware Professionals or NYACC/PC-Blue - New York Amateur Computer
- Club.)
-
- If archiving SportsCards 2.0 for BBS use or library use, please include all
- files and use the name: SPRTCD20, (i.e. SPRTCD20.ARC or SPRTCD20.ZIP) as
- this will provide consistency for future updates.
-
- The registered version is only available from The Sellware Source.
-
- ===============================================================================
- FULLY FUNCTIONAL VERSION
- ===============================================================================
-
- This is a fully functional version of SportsCards 2.0. There are, of
- course, a few annoying screens that will flash on the screen 1) upon
- initial entry into the program and 2) whenever you go to print your
- reports to anywhere other than the screen. This can be disabled by
- registering your program.
-
- ===============================================================================
- THE 4COLLECTORS SERIES
- ===============================================================================
-
- At the present time (May 1993) there are only two 4COLLECTORS products.
- They are: SportsCards ($9.95), a data base for sports card collectors, and
- VideoBase ($6.95), a data base for keeping track of your videos. See more
- about both products below. We plan on adding other programs in the future.
- What we really want is feedback from you. What kind of programs would YOU
- be interested in seeing? If you have any ideas for new products give us a
- shout. We'd love to hear from you.

- ===============================================================================
- WHAT COPY PROTECTION?
- ===============================================================================
-
- We decided against having any real copy protection in the registered
- versions of our 4COLLECTORS software. The only "protection" we have is a form
- that pops up when you first start the program. The form has the owner's name,
- address, city, state and zip code displayed. And it stays displayed for
- couple of seconds (actual time depends on your computer). We're sorry if this
- is a bit annoying...but we won't be changing this any time soon. We fully
- realize that people love to "share" their software with friends, relatives,
- coworkers, acquaintances, a friend of a friend of an uncle whose son just
- turned 13, Uncle Carl's second cousin on his father's side, etc. And there is
- not a whole lot anyone can do to stop this type of practice. I know some
- companies try, and with some success, but let's be honest, it still happens.
- And if the original owner of our software wants to share his/her software with
- others and have their name displayed everytime the uncle of a friend's
- neighbor and his cousins starts this software, then so be it.
-
- One of the main causes of software piracy is the cost. People say to
- themselves, "Why pay $50 (or $100, $200, etc.) when I can get it for free?".
- But we believe that people, in general, would rather get their software
- legitimately...so we wanted to give them an "inexpensive opportunity" to do
- so.
-
- ===============================================================================
- WHY SO CHEAP?
- ===============================================================================
-
- A very common question we hear is "How come the price of your
- products are so inexpensive?" ('Cheap'is actually the word they use but we
- don't like to think our products are cheap :) The answer has several parts to
- it.
- First of all, the first versions of our programs were written as favors
- for friends. Nobody was 'hired' to write the software. The authors just
- happen to like to program.
- Second, we don't have any real overhead (minimal advertising costs,
- etc.).
- Third, we wanted our products to be inexpensive enough so virtually
- anyone with the need for our type of software could afford them. Not everyone
- has an extra $50, $70 or even $100 or more to spend on computer software.
- And last but not least, we had to consider that today's serious
- collectors are starting at a younger age than ever before and we didn't want
- to exclude them when it came time to pricing our products. And with that in
- mind we started to think about the parents of these young collectors. Not
- many parents will shell out $50, $70 or $100 just so their son or daughter
- can keep track of their collection...but for $10 or so they might consider it.
-
- ===============================================================================
- ANY QUESTIONS? PROBLEMS?
- ===============================================================================
-
- We encourage you to let us know of any problems encountered while using
- products obtained from The Sellware Source. We will try to resolve any
- software problems as they are made known to us. To insure a reply when
- using the postal system, please enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope
- with your correspondence. Foreign corresponders should include currency or
- postal coupons instead of stamps. Our address is:

- COPYRIGHT NOTICE
- ===============================================================================
-
- 4COLLECTORS SportsCards 2.0 source and object code are (C) Copyright 1993
- by The Sellware Source.
-
- Authors : Steven R. Knop and Bruce L. Willden 1993 All rights reserved.
-
- PROGRAM CONTENT : You should have the following files.
-
- SPORTCRD.EXE - Main program
- SPORTCRD.DOC - This document
- SPORTCRD.DFL - Forms definition file
- 4COLLECT.RGS - Registration
- MANUAL.BLK - On-Line manual
- MANUAL.DAT - On-Line manual
- MANUAL.IDX - On-Line manual
- ORDRFORM.DOC - Order form
- ANSWER.COM - Utility for installation
- SETUP.BAT - Initial setup utility
-
- Other files will be created for each sports card type you collect. The data
- for each type will be under its own subdirectory, i.e. C:\SPORTSCRD\BASKET,
- C:\SPORTSCRD\FOOTBALL, etc. And each sport can have as many as four files
- associated with it. The filenames will be named like those listed below:
-
- CARD.DAT - Card data
- CARD.IDX - Card index
- SETS.DAT - Sets data
- SETS.IDX - Sets index
-
- Once you've selected a sport card type to work with, the program will
- create another file in the main SPORTCRD directory called SPORT.DAT. This
- is used to remember which sport card type you worked with the last time you
- were using the program.
-
- ===============================================================================
- REQUIREMENTS
- ===============================================================================
-
- You need a minimum of an 80286 computer with 512K of free memory to run
- 4COLLECTORS SportsCards. SportsCards will work with less than the suggested
- 512K of free memory, but minor problems may arise. It is best to free up
- a minimum of 512K of memory. A slowdown of the program may also occur if
- you have certain TSRs in memory.
-
- SportsCards will NOT operate in the XT environment.
-
- ANSI.SYS must be installed in your CONFIG.SYS file.
-
- SportsCards can be run from a floppy disk drive, however, the program will
- run a LOT slower from a floppy AND you will be greatly limited to the
- number of cards you can enter into the data base due to the small storage
- capacity of the diskette. For that reason, using this program on a hard
- disk is highly recommended.
-
-
- ===============================================================================
- HOW TO USE 4COLLECTORS SPORTSCARDS
- ===============================================================================
- ******************
- (F1) * ON-LINE MANUAL * (F1)
- ******************
-
- You can press the F1 key anytime while you're in the program and the
- On-Line Manual will appear on the screen. The screen will be split into
- two sections, the left side is the index of subjects while the right side
- is the help information that pertains to the highlighted subject on the
- left.
-
- SELECTING A SUBJECT
-
- To select a subject highlight the subject of your choice and press ENTER.
- You can search for a subject two ways: 1) by using the arrow keys or the
- PgUp/PgDn keys; or 2) by using the 'Quick Search' method (described below).
-
- Once you have highlighted the subject you wish to view, hit the ENTER
- key. You will now be able to scroll through the help "window". To return
- to the subject window, simply hit the ENTER key again. To exit out of the
- On-Line Manual hit the ESC key. You will return to where you before you
- entered the On-Line Manual.
-
- QUICK SEARCH
-
- Type the first letter of the subject you wish to locate. The cursor will
- move to the first subject that begins with that letter. If there is more
- than one subject starting with the same letter, type the second letter,
- then the third, etc., until you locate the subject of your choice.
-
- EXAMPLE
-
- Let's say you want to find out more about the NUMBER OF CARDS/SETS option.
- Type 'N'. The cursor highlights NEXT. Then type 'U'. The cursor then
- highlights the NUMBER OF CARDS/SETS subject.
-
- Whenever you want to search for a new/different subject press the SPACE BAR
- to "clear the search buffer", then type in the first letter of the new
- subject.
-
- ***************************
- * SELECTING A MENU OPTION *
- ***************************
-
- There are two ways to select a menu option. The first is to type in the
- highlighted 'letter'. The second is to use the arrow keys to move the
- highlight block from one option to another. When you locate the option
- you want press ENTER.
-
-
- ****************
- (F2) * ADD CARD/SET * (F2)
- ****************
-
- To add a card or set you need to get to the Edit Card or Edit Set screen.
- There are two ways to get to the Edit Card screen. The first is to choose
- the Edit Card option on the Main Menu. The second way is through the
- Scroll/Edit option on the Main Menu. When you're in the Scroll/Edit module,
- if you press ENTER the Edit Card screen will appear.
-
- You can "clear the form" by pressing CTRL-HOME (the CTRL and Home keys at the
- same time). Or, if you choose, you can overwrite the information that is
- currently on the screen.
-
- Enter the appropriate card information and press the F2 key. The message
- "Card Added" will appear at the bottom of the screen is you successfully
- added a record to the data base.
-
- Adding a set works the same way...you can select the Edit Sets option on
- the Complete Sets Menu or go through the Scroll/Edit option.
-
- SPECIAL NOTE
-
- If you see an asterick and the word 'comment' on the form, this means that
- there is a comment attached to that card.
-
- When you're adding a new card/set AND if the card or set you are overwriting
- has a comment attached to it, you will be asked, "Do you want to save the
- attached comment (Y/N)" If this is a comment you have just added you'll want
- to answer 'Y'. If it is a comment from the card/set you are overwriting you
- will want to answer 'N'. Entering 'N' will leave the comment field blank.
- (You will only be asked this question if there was a comment attached to the
- card/set you were previously viewing).
-
- If you add a new card or set using the CTRL-HOME key combination to clear
- the form, THE COMMENT WILL STILL BE ATTACHED to the previously displayed
- card/set. The question "Do you want to save the attached comment (Y/N)" may
- still be asked, depending on if there was a comment attached to the one you
- overwrote.
-
- If you do an ALT-C to see the attached comment, you can also do a CTRL-HOME
- to clear the comment. When you exit the comment field you will no longer see
- the asterick and the word 'comment'. In this case you will not be asked if
- you want to save the attached comment.
-
- ******************
- * ALL CARDS/SETS *
- ******************
-
- (Card Search Menu, Sets Search Menu)
-
- The All Cards or All Sets options will create a report that contains
- information about ALL of your cards/sets. This report can be viewed either
- on the screen, sent to a file or sent directly to a printer.
-
- (See Report Output for more information)
-
- *************
- * AUTOGRAPH *
- *************
-
- (Card Search Menu)
-
- This option searches your data base for cards you have marked as having been
- autographed. It could also be used to signify that you have that person's
- autograph but not necessarily have the card autographed (you could attach a
- comment stating that). This report can be viewed either on the screen, sent
- to a file or sent directly to a printer.
-
- (See Report Output for more information)
-
- ***************
- * CARD NUMBER *
- ***************
-
- (Card Search Menu)
-
- This option is used to display a report of a particular card number. If you
- enter the number 333, for example, all cards with the number 333 will be
- displayed in the report.
-
- This report can be viewed either on the screen, sent to a file or sent
- directly to a printer.
-
- (See Report Output for more information)
-
- ************
- (ALT-C) * COMMENTS * (ALT-C)
- ************
-
- You can add comments to your cards or sets by pressing the ALT-C key
- combination (the ALT and C keys at the same time). You're limited to two
- lines of 50 characters at this time.
-
- WHEN ADDING A NEW CARD OR SET
-
- If you're adding a new card or set AND if the card or set you are overwriting
- has a comment attached to it, you will be asked, "Do you want to save the
- attached comment (Y/N)" If this is a comment you have just added you'll want
- to answer 'Y'. If it is a comment from the card/set you are overwriting you
- will probably want to answer 'N'. Entering 'N' will leave the comment field
- blank (you will only be asked this question if there was a comment attached
- to the card/set you were previously viewing).
-
- If you add a new card or set using the CTRL-HOME key combination to clear
- the form, THE COMMENT WILL STILL BE ATTACHED to the previously displayed
- card/set. The question "Do you want to save the attached comment (Y/N)" may
- still be asked, depending on if there was a comment attached to the one you
- overwrote.
-
- If you do an ALT-C to see the attached comment, you can also do a CTRL-HOME
- to clear the comment. When you exit the comment field you will no longer see
- the asterick and the word 'comment'. In this case you will not be asked if
- you want to save the attached comment.
-
-
- ADDING A COMMENT TO A CARD/SET THAT ALREADY EXISTS
-
- If you are adding a new comment to a 'previously entered card or set' OR if
- you are modifying an existing comment, press the F3 key (Modify) after you
- exit the comment form. If you don't press the F3 key YOUR COMMENT WILL NOT
- BE SAVED TO DISK.
- ALT-C TO VIEW COMMENT
-
- You can also use the ALT-C key combination to view your previously entered
- comments. Pressing <ENTER> or the <ESC> key will take you back to the card
- or set edit screens.
-
- *******************
- (F7) * CONTINUE SEARCH * (F7)
- *******************
-
- The CONTINUE SEARCH option is to be used after you have just used the LOCATE
- option. Press the F7 key to search for the next card that matches the last
- name (or partial name) that you entered.
-
- EXAMPLE
-
- Let's say you are looking for a particular Rickey Henderson card. You do a
- LOCATE (F8), enter Henderson (or any part of his name i.e. HEND), and the
- card that is displayed on the screen is not the one you were looking for.
- Press the F7 key repeatedly until you find the right card.
-
-
- *******************
- (F4) * DELETE CARD/SET * (F4)
- *******************
-
- To delete the card/set that is currently on the screen, press the F4 key.
- You will see the message "Card Deleted" or "Set Deleted" if you were
- successful in deleting it from the data base.
-
- If you should delete a card/set by accident, BEFORE you leave that
- particular screen, press the F2 key...your record will be added back into
- the data base.
-
- *******
- (F9) * DOS * (F9)
- *******
-
- If your computer has enough free memory, by pressing the F9 key you will be
- able to exit the program temporarily and go to the DOS operating system.
- You will be somewhat limited in what you can do due to the fact that your
- program is still 'in memory' and it might prevent you from doing things you
- might normally be able to do, i.e. play a game, use certain word processors,
- etc. You should, however, be able to print files, use a small text editor,
- copy files, etc. This can be very handy for viewing reports that you
- created while in the program.
-
- To return to the program type 'EXIT' at the DOS prompt.
-
- *******************
- * DUPLICATES PLUS *
- *******************
-
- (Card Search Menu, Sets Search Menu)
-
- Use this option if you want to find your duplicate cards or sets. After the
- Print Report window appears, another window will be displayed with the number
- 1 (one) already entered. Press ENTER if you want to find the cards/sets
- that you have more than one in quantity. If you want to find the cards/sets
- where you have more than that, enter the new number in the window.
-
- EXAMPLE
-
- Let's say you want to find the cards that you have more than three in
- quantity. Enter a 3 in the window and press ENTER. Your report will show
- all cards that you have four or more in quantity.
-
- This report can be viewed either on the screen, sent to a file or sent
- directly to a printer.
-
- (See Report Output for more information)
-
- *******************
- * EDIT CARDS/SETS *
- *******************
-
- (Main Menu, Complete Sets Menu)
-
- All of the individual card/set information can be seen on this screen. The
- only thing not visible when you first enter the screen are any comments that
- you may have added (see Comments above).
-
- CHARACTER FIELDS
-
- Tab to the field you wish to add/update and simply type in the new
- information. If you are updating information you will need to blank out
- any unwanted characters before you press the F3 key (Update). You can
- blank out remaining spaces by pressing the CTRL-END key combination.
-
- ADDING NUMERIC FIELDS
-
- If you are inputing new information in numeric fields (i.e. card numbers,
- values, etc.) the cursor will start at the left side of the input field.
- Enter your information. As soon as you leave that particular field the
- number you entered will automatically move to the right.
-
- MODIFYING NUMERIC FIELDS
-
- Updating (modifying) a numeric field works almost the same. When you are
- done making your changes to your data, if there is more than one position
- to the right of the cursor, press the Space Bar once (you don't have to
- blank out the rest of the field). When you leave this field the program
- will automatically delete whatever is remaining of your previous number
- and will shift your new new number to the right.
-
- EXAMPLE
-
- In the following example the | symbol represents the border of the field
- on the screen.
-
- Let's say you have the value $5.25 entered and you want to change that to
- $7.10. The following is how the change would look:
-
- |$ 5.25| <- Original value
- |7.10 25| <- Enter new value, press SPACE BAR once
- |$ 7.10| <- New value shifts over to the right
- once you leave that field
-
- CONDITIONS
-
- There are seven of the standard predefined card conditions ranging from Mint
- to Poor. There is a blank condition field (under PR - poor). You can use
- this field to create your own condition.
-
- PAID
-
- This field was added so you could keep track of your initial investment.
-
- (ALT-C) COMMENTS (ALT-C)
-
- See COMMENTS above.
-
- ********
- (ESC) * EXIT * (ESC)
- ********
-
- The ESCape key allows you to exit to the previous screen. It can also be
- used to exit out of the program.
-
- *****************
- (F10) * FUNCTION KEYS * (F10)
- *****************
-
- Pressing the F10 key will display a summary of what the function keys and
- certain key combinations do. Keep in mind that not all of the function keys
- and key combinations work in every section of the this program. In some
- areas you'll be limited to what you can do.
-
- ********
- (F1) * HELP * (F1)
- ********
-
- Pressing the F1 key bring ups the On-Line Manual.
-
- *************
- * LAST NAME *
- *************
-
- (Card Search Menu)
-
- The LAST NAME function asks you for a last name. You don't have to enter a
- complete last name. You can enter as many or as few letters as you wish. But
- the more letters you enter the closer you will get to the card you're looking
- for.
-
- EXAMPLE
-
- If you enter an 'H' the report will show all cards where the last name
- begins with 'H'. Whereas if you enter the complete last name 'HENDERSON'
- only your HENDERSON cards will be displayed.
-
- This report can be viewed either on the screen, sent to a file or sent
- directly to a printer.
-
- (See Report Output for more information)
-
- **********
- (F8) * LOCATE * (F8)
- **********
-
- LOCATE A CARD
-
- The LOCATE A CARD function is identical to the LAST NAME function. You will
- be asked for a last name. You don't have to enter a complete last name. You
- can enter as many or as few letters as you wish. But the more letters you
- enter the closer you will get to the card you're looking for.
-
- EXAMPLE
-
- If you enter an 'H' the first card with the last name starting with 'H'
- will appear. Whereas if you enter the complete last name 'HENDERSON'
- only your HENDERSON cards will be displayed.
-
- LOCATE A SET
-
- When trying to LOCATE A SET the program will ask you for the YEAR you are
- looking for. The highlight bar will move to the first occurrence of that
- year. From there use the arrow keys to move to the set you're looking for.
-
- ********
- (F6) * NEXT * (F6)
- ********
-
- In the Card Edit module the NEXT function finds the next card according to
- the order of Card Year, Card Manufacturer, Card Number, and Player's Last
- Name.
-
- In the Sets Edit Module the NEXT function finds the next set according to
- the order of Set Year and Set Manufacturer.
-
- ************************
- * NUMBER OF CARDS/SETS *
- ************************
-
- (Main Menu, Complete Sets Menu)
-
- These options are found on the Main Menu and the Complete Sets Menu. The
- Main Menu option calculates the total number of cards you've entered into
- your data base whereas this option on the Complete Sets Menu calculates
- the number of sets entered. When calculating the total the program does NOT
- include more than one card or set in the case of duplicates.
-
- EXAMPLE
-
- Let's say you have the following cards and number in quantity.
-
- HENDERSON, RICKEY 2
- KALINE , AL 1
- ROSE , PETE 2
-
- Your total number of cards would be three.
-
- ************
- (F5) * PREVIOUS * (F5)
- ************
-
- In the Card Edit Module the PREVIOUS function finds the previous card
- according to the order of Card Year, Card Manufacturer, Card Number and
- Player's Last Name.
-
- In the Sets Edit Module the PREVIOUS function finds the previous set
- according to the order of Card Year and Card Manufacturer.
-
- **************
- (ALT-Q) * QUICK EDIT * (ALT-Q)
- **************
-
- To make the updating of values and quantities of your cards easier for you
- we added some Quick Edit functions. Quick editing allows you to add or
- subtract from the values presently in the Mint or Near Mint conditions
- without having to tab down to those fields. You can also add or subtract in
- the Quantity field. The new values/quantities are saved immediately upon
- making the changes. There is no need to press the F3 (update) key.
-
- CTRL-F1 <- Mint value + $.10
- CTRL-F2 <- Mint value + $.01
- SHFT-F1 <- Mint value - $.10
- SHFT-F2 <- Mint value - $.01
-
- CTRL-F3 <- NrMint value + $.10
- CTRL-F4 <- NrMint value + $.01
- SHFT-F3 <- NrMint value - $.10
- SHFT-F4 <- NrMint value - $.01
-
- CTRL-F5 <- Quantity + 1
- SHFT-F5 <- Quantity - 1
-
- A list of the commands are readily available from within the Edit Cards or
- Edit Sets modules by pressing ALT-Q.
-
- *****************
- * REBUILD INDEX *
- *****************
-
- (Main Menu, Complete Sets Menu)
-
- To maximize the speed in which your program retrieves data, use this option
- after you have made numerous additions or deletions to your data base.
- Basically, what this option does is 'put things in order' on your disk. If
- you think of your disk as a filing cabinet this option puts all the records
- in alphabetical order, i.e, all the information relating to 'SMITH' will be
- in one 'folder'. The program won't have to search through 'every piece of
- paper' to find what it's looking for.

- Anytime you do a search, whether it be by name, card number, etc., a window
- will appear asking you where you want the output to go. You have four
- options here.
-
- BACK OUT
-
- The first option is to 'back out' and not perform the search (return to the
- Search Menu). Press the ESC key to back out. No report is created.
-
- TO THE SCREEN
-
- The default option is to send the report to the screen. The letters 'CON'
- (which stands for CONsole) is already entered for you. All you have to do
- is press ENTER and the report will go to the screen.
-
- TO THE PRINTER
-
- If you want to send the report directly to the printer enter 'PRN'.
-
- TO A FILE
-
- If you would like to send the report to a file for later viewing, type in
- the name of the file (this file will be created for you). This file has no
- special formatting so it can be viewed by any text editor or word processor.
- You can also TYPE it from the DOS command line.
-
- EXAMPLE
-
- Let's say you want a report of all of your 1990 TOPPS cards. From the Search
- Menu you would select Year/Manufacturer. When the first window appears type
- 1990TOPP.RPT. This will be the name of your file (the program creates this
- file for you). Press ENTER. A second window will appear when using this
- particular search option (asking you for the year and a card manufacturer of
- your choice). In this second window type 1990, TAB down to the next field
- and type TOPPS. Your report would then be sent to the file 1990TOPP.RPT that
- was created for you.
-
- If your computer has enough free memory and you would like to view this file
- immediately press the F9 key (DOS). If your computer does not have enough
- free memory the message 'Error Exiting to DOS' will appear at the bottom of
- the screen. If you see a DOS prompt (yours might look like C:>BASEBALL )
- type the following:
-
- TYPE 1990TOPP.RPT | MORE
-
- press ENTER. Your report will be displayed on the screen one page at a
- time.
-
- If your report is a long one and you don't want to view the whole thing,
- press CTRL-C (the CTRL key and C at the same time). The DOS prompt will
- appear. Type 'EXIT' to return to the program.
-
- If you'd like to print this file, at the DOS prompt type the following:
-
- PRINT 1990TOPP.RPT
-
- and press ENTER.

- you enter the closer you will get to the card you're looking for.
-
- EXAMPLE
-
- By typing 'H' in the window the first card with a last name that begins with
- H will be highlighted. By typing 'HE' narrows the search a little. By
- typing the complete name 'HENDERSON' the first card with the last name

-
- In the Scroll/Edit set module you will only be asked for a year. You must
- enter a 4-digit year.

-
- Choosing the VALUE OF CARDS/SETS option will show you in a matter of seconds
