WeatherView Station Mapping Utility (STATION.EXE)
1.0 What is STATION.EXE
STATION.EXE is a utility program which allows the user to add or delete
stations from the graphic map portion of WeatherView. It is provided
as a stand-alone program and can be run by typing STATION from within
the WeatherView working directory.
2.0 Running STATION
Upon entry to the STATION utility program, the following options are
displayed:
· Add/Delete Stations from the Zoom Map
· Add/Delete Stations from the Radar Map
· Transpose Zoom Station to the National Map
· Transpose Zoom Station to the Radar Map
· Delete Station from the National Map
· Exit
These options are described in the following subsections:
2.1 Add/Delete Station from the Zoom Map
This option is the workhorse of the STATION program. Press 'E' or ESC
at any time when finished to return to the main menu. When chosen, the
national map (with current available national stations) is displayed
with the zoom box. The user should move the box to the desired area,
shrink or expand the zoom box as desired, and press enter. Note: using
a smaller zoom box increases the accuracy of locating a station.
TO ADD A STATION: A crosshair will be located at the center of the zoom
window. Move the crosshair to the approximate location of the station
you wish add. TO FINE TUNE THE LOCATION OF THE CROSSHAIR, PRESS THE
'1' KEY ABOVE THE KEYBOARD. This key toggles the jump increment of the
crosshair from a large jump to a small jump and vice versa. When the
correct station location is found, press the keypad '+' (plus) key.
You will be prompted to enter the 3 letter code for the new station.
If that station is already located in the coordinate file the user is
notified and provided the option to override the other station. The
user will then prompted to indicate whether or not the new station
reports temperature/dew point in degrees Celsius (i.e. Canadian
stations). The new station is then located on the map.
TO DELETE A STATION: As a safety feature, the station you wish to
delete must be within the zoom window. This reduces the risk of
accidently deleting a station. Press the keypad '-' (minus) key. You
are prompted to enter the 3 letter code of the station to delete. If
the station resides in the zoom window, it will be removed from the
screen display and the coordinate file.
2.2 Add/Delete Station to the Radar Map
Similar to the previous option, this option allows to add or delete
radar station. In MOST cases the Surface Airways (SA) and Digital
Radar (SD) for a reporting city will have the same station code and can
be transposed from the zoom map to the radar map (section 2.4 of this
document). In some cases (i.e. Tampa, FL) the SA and SD stations have
a different code requiring the use of this option. If you wish to
remove a radar station from the radar map, this option must be used.
Press 'E' or ESC at any time to return to the main menu. When chosen,
the national map (with current available radar stations) is displayed
with the zoom box. The user should move the box to the desired area,
shrink or expand the zoom box as desired and press enter. Note: using
a smaller zoom box increases the accuracy of locating a station.
When the
correct location is determined press the keypad '+' (plus) key. You
will be prompted to enter the 3 letter code for the new station. If
that station is already located in the coordinate file the user is
notified and provided the option to override the other station. The
new station is then located on the map.
TO DELETE A STATION: As a safety feature, the station you wish to
delete must be within the zoom window area. This reduces the risk of
accidently deleting a station. Press the keypad '-' (minus) key. You
will be prompted to enter the 3 letter code of the station to delete.
If the station resides in the zoom window, it will be removed from the
screen display and the coordinate file.
2.3 Transpose a Zoom Station to the National Map
If a station is already present as a SA zoom station (within the zoom
map), it can be directly transposed to the national map. When
prompted, enter the code of the existing zoom station. NOTE: The data
array for the national map is currently limited to 238 stations (this
will be expanded in a future version of WeatherView after some addition
memory management). If the array is full, STATION will not allow any
additional stations. Note: WeatherView comes with 238 stations already
provided. To add a station after you are notified that the array is
full, you must first delete a national station (section 2.5 of this
document) before adding another.
2.4 Transpose a Zoom Station to the Radar Map
If a desired radar station is already present as a SA zoom station, it
can be directly transposed from the zoom map to the radar map. When
prompted, enter the code of the existing zoom station.
2.5 Delete a National Station
As previously stated, the national map is limited to 238 reporting
stations. WeatherView comes with 238 stations already provided. To
transpose a zoom station to the national map, an existing national
station must first be deleted from the national map to free space in
the data array. When prompted, simply enter the station to be deleted.
This will free up a space for other stations to be added.
3.0 Comments
I decided to use a crosshair locating device rather than latitude and
longitude because it tends to be more accurate with these graphic maps.
Also, many of the users requesting this option want to enter local
reporting networks. I will probably add the latitude and longitude
entry as a option in future versions of this utility program.
**IMPORTANT**
The user is recommended to keep a backup of the current coordinate
files (*.CRD) before any alterations are made. As a precaution,
STATION.EXE will make a backup of the coordinate files (*.BAK) before
overwriting with user changes. If you have made changes to any of the
coordinate files, remember to SAVE and COPY your altered *.CRD files to
all future WeatherView updates.
As with the WeatherView program, comments are always encouraged and
gratefully accepted.
