=========================== DEVELOPING A FILE ================================
----- Build your file by adding & revising NAMES, MEMOS, and MATCH-UPS. ------
NAMES - Up to 47 names of three generations of family members or other important
persons in your life. This is your 'Extended Family of Origin'.
MEMOS - A few paragraphs of text about a specific person, concerning a specific
topic. YOU create up to 250 topics; explore any area of interest.
MATCH-UPS - A visual display of each family member categorized into groups you
create. Observe family patterns in up to 13 categories.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE -- Start a NEW FILE and review your family tree. Change & add names
of family members until you have composed a tree of your family of origin. Now,
you may wish to add some memos, explore some patterns, print the family tree, or
enter descriptions of each person. Proceed in whatever order you want!
The following 'Help' screens describe more commands. Remember to use any
command listed on the bottom line, or press <F1> for a list of more commands.
NOTE -- To explore further generations, start a new file for each grandparent!
================================ TREE MODE ===================================
------------ The TREE MODE develops a list of family members ------------------
Press <F8> until you read 'TREE MODE' in the lower-left corner.
Begin a new file in the TREE MODE by verifying that yourself, your parents,
and your grandparents are displayed as you wish. We recommend recording all
people by using their NAME AT BIRTH. Move the pointer to each entry you wish to
REVISE, press <F3>, then make your desired changes. There's room beneath each
of these entries to ADD names of any siblings. Move the pointer to any entry
and press <F2> to ADD a new name below. (You may enter names of step-relations,
or whomever you wish.) Through this process you'll be building a chart of:
Yourself/Siblings -- Each Parent/Siblings -- Each Grandparent/Siblings
Press <TAB> to flip the pointer to the upper-left corner. Press <F3> to revise
the description of each person in your family tree. You can enter a brief
description such as sister, father, aunt, etc. Press <TAB> again to flip the
pointer back to the family tree.
These names make up your extended Family of Origin, the components of your
family system. You may continue to ADD, REVISE, or DELETE these entries at any
time while running the program.

================================ MEMO MODE ===================================
------------ The MEMO MODE displays memos about family members. --------------
Press <F8> until you read 'MEMO MODE' in the lower-left corner.
Notice the list of TOPICS in the upper-left. Add to this list so that it
contains topics which are of interest to you (an example might be 'Occupation').
Press <TAB> to flip the pointer, then press <F2> to add to the list. Also,
press <F3> to revise text or <F4> to delete a topic. This list can hold up to
250 topics; enter whatever you wish.
Now you're ready to record some information. Use <TAB> and <ARROW KEYS> to
move the pointer to TOPIC or NAME to explore. Press <ENTER> to set the entry
to be the current memo index; then as you scroll the pointer you'll notice how
this index is displayed in the lower-left and is linked to other entries. For
each pairing of name and topic, a memo is available.
Press <F5> to view the memo. At first all memos are empty; view and revise
any memo about which you want to record more details. There's a memo available
for each name/topic link, so there can be a maximum of 11750 memos! Notice that
the first few characters of each memo are displayed on the screen after the memo
is saved. Again, REVISE or DELETE at any time.
============================== MATCH-UP MODE =================================
--------- The MATCH-UP MODE shows patterns in your family system. ------------
Press <F8> until you read 'MATCH-UP MODE' in the lower left corner.
Here you'll build a list of CATEGORIES and record which persons fit them.
Notice the list of CATEGORIES in the upper-left. Add to this list so that it
contains categories which are of interest to you (an example might be 'College
Graduate'). As with Memos, press <TAB>, <F2>, <F3> & <F4> to build a list which
reflects your interest. You may add, revise, or delete categories at any time.
To record & view match-ups, use <TAB> and <ARROW KEYS> to move the pointer to
a CATEGORY or NAME to explore. Press <ENTER> to set that entry as the current
match-up INDEX. Check out the screen -- any entry of the opposite group which
you want to associate with the index should be HIGHLIGHTED. Move the pointer to
each entry and press <SPACE> until the highlighting is correct. For example, if
the index is 'College Graduate' adjust the highlighting so that the NAME of any
College Graduate is lit. Experiment to get the feel of this.
When you press <F2> to add a new name or category, remember to verify that all
of the highlighting is correct as soon as possible.
NOTE -- At times, you may press <F6> to see match-ups meeting DOUBLE criteria.

================================ EXPORTING ===================================
--------- EXPORT selected information to a printer or to a text file. ----------
Press <F9> to select and export some of your family information. Choose:
ENTRIES: Either 'Graphical Family Tree' (visual overview of the family)
-or- 'List...' (brief list of all persons, with descriptions)
-or- 'Memos' (several options of memo combinations)
-or- 'Match-Ups' (arranged either by person or by category)
DESTINATION: Either 'Printer' (the printer connected to your computer)
-or- 'Text File' (a new DOS file created on a disk drive)
Press <ENTER> to proceed. Select a printer, or enter the name of a text file.
--> 'Printer #1' refers to 'LPT1:' and 'Printer #2' refers to 'LPT2:'.
--> The extension '.TXT' is added to the name of any new text file you enter.
Do not specify an extension when entering the name of a new text file.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HINT -- Press <F7> to check the STATUS before exporting a long list of memos.
The list might be huge! While exporting, you may press <ESC> to cancel.
================================= SAVING =====================================
----- SAVE the file often. Return to the Main Menu to exit the program. -----
Press <F10> for FILE options. Press <S> to SAVE & EXIT; this returns you to
the Main Menu. Press <R> to SAVE & RESUME; this guards against unexpected data
loss, and also deletes a temporary file and frees disk space!
'What a Family' uses these DOS FILE TYPES:
.EXE - Executable file. Just ONE file, 'WFAM.EXE', runs the whole program!
No support files of any kind are required.
.FAM - Family data file. This is the file that's created to store all the
information you record about each family. Just ONE file per family
is used. Create a new '.FAM' file for each new family you explore.
.BAK - Back-up file. When a '.FAM' file is saved, the PREVIOUS version is
renamed with the extension '.BAK'.
.TXT - Text files, created when exporting information to a file.
A temporary file named '(DELETE!.ME)' is created while running the program.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE -- Since ALL THE ENTRIES AND MEMOS for each family are stored in just ONE
file, that file can become huge. Keep enough disk space available to handle the
data file, the back-up file, and the temporary file. SAVE & RESUME often.
