Using an Orienteering Compass
Following a bearing: Suppose the desired bearing is 140 ............
1. Turn the housing case around until 140 is at the Direction of
Travel arrow (bearing arrow).
2. Hold compass so Direction of Travel arrow points straight ahead of
you.
3. Orient the compass: Turn YOURSELF around in a circle until the
orienting arrow on the plastic face of the dial is exactly under the
needle (the North needle, usually red), pointing the same way.
4. You are now oriented and facing 140 , the orienting arrow is
pointing North.
5. To find the bearing of an object you see: line up the Direction of
Travel arrow with the object and then turn the housing case until the
orienting arrow and the needle are pointing the same way. Read the
bearing at the Direction of Travel arrow.
6. If you are using a map and desire good accuracy, remember to
adjust for the magnetic declination (if not O ).
