In these lessons many methods and skills of finding your way
under any circumstance will be discussed. The first priority is to
orient yourself, or know where you are starting from. This is not
as simple as it sounds because it is easy to become disoriented in
unfamiliar areas or in the wide open forest, desert, and mountain
regions. If you are familiar with the area, or have a compass, this
is easy and will be discussed. On the next 2 screens methods to
orientate yourself if you are lost with no equipment or help are
shown. They should be tried now so you can use them if ever needed.
For instance, many people think the North Star is bright and easily
found. Actually it is quite dull and hard to find if you haven't
tried before. Note that the North Star is found by finding the "big
dipper", sighting along its 2 "pointer stars" (the stars at the end,
dipper part) to the first star on the handle of the "little dipper".
The North Star is about 4 times the distance between the 2 "pointer
stars" away from the "big dipper". All stars appear to rotate
around the North Star, so the position of the "big dipper" will
change nightly and hourly, but this method will always work.
