If you had trouble with this exexcise, review the compass
points discussed earlier. To be very accurate over long
distances, a compass is essential. Being able to estimate
bearings and distances, however, is an important skill to master
if you want to improve your general "sense of direction", don't
have a compass, or are just learning the art of pathfinding/
orienteering/exploring. More specific information on using a
map and compass will be given later. For now, concentrate on
learning what the degrees of bearing are.
The next two pages contain a slightly more complicated
exercise. Before you begin, you might want to draw out a (or
print out this programs) diagram of the compass points. The
lesson only covers bearings, not distances.
If you can start thinking of travel (of any kind) in terms
of bearings, or angles and distances, then you are well on the
way to being able to find your way in any circumstance and never
really be lost again. Note that this skill is very much a matter
of science (geometry), and not chance.
