In obtaining a good sense of
direction, it is important to
understand the concept of
"degrees". Think of yourself as
standing in the exact center of a
circle ( the size of the circle
makes NO difference ). The
universal point of beginning
(orientation) is North. If you
are facing exactly North, you

are at 0 (or 360, 0 is usually used). East is then at 90 , and so
on around the circle. It is not correct to say 180 South, 180 IS
South. If you were traveling on a bearing of 225 you would be
going South-East. On this relatively simple and straightforward
concept is based virtually all travel with a map and/or compass.
Your goal should be to start thinking of "West" as just a name for
270 . The key to finding your way in any circumstance is to orient
yourself to North, and then use your knowledge of degrees and
angles so you reach your goal by planning, not hoping.
