  119.                          SHAREWARE REGISTRATION INFORMATION

  121.           Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  122.           before buying it.  If you try a Shareware program and continue
  123.           using it, you are expected to register.  Individual programs
  124.           differ on details -- some request registration while others
  125.           require it, some specify a maximum trial period.  With
  126.           registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
  127.           using the software to an updated program with a printed manual.

  129.           Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
  130.           and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  131.           exceptions as stated below.  Shareware authors are accomplished
  132.           programmers, like commercial authors, and programs are of
  133.           comparable quality.  (In both cases, there are good programs and
  134.           bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution.
  135.           The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute
  136.           the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group.
  137.           For example, some authors require written permission before a
  138.           commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.

  141.           should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  142.           whether it's commercial or Shareware.  The Shareware system makes
  143.           fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.

  145.           has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
  146.           product, you don't pay for it.

  149.           user for evaluation.  The essence of "user-supported" software is
  150.           to provide personal computer users with quality software without

  157.           continue to develop new products.  If you find FTP useful and are
  158.           continuing to use FTP after a reasonable trial period, you must

  160.           The FTP program took many man-hours of software development
  161.           effort to produce, and registration fees are the ONLY WAY the
  162.           authors receive compensation for their time and effort.  Help to
  163.           keep the Shareware concept alive and well by becoming a
  164.           registered user after your evaluation period.  The FTP Shareware
  165.           program is not copy protected or "crippled" in any way from the
  166.           registered user's version; Common Sense Software is counting on

  175.           reference guide covering the program's operation, as well as
  176.           technical support by both mail and phone.  In addition,
  177.           registered users will receive a FREE COPY OF GENCHECK, a new
  178.           program offered by Common Sense Software which verifies the
  179.           integrity of your database.  A registration form is provided at
  180.           the end of this manual for your convenience.  You are encouraged
  181.           to pass a copy of the shareware version of FTP along to your
  182.           friends for evaluation, but please do not give it away altered or
  183.           as part of another system.  Please encourage them to register
  184.           their copy if they find that they can use it.

  186.           Anyone distributing FTP for any kind of remuneration must first
  187.           contact Common Sense Software for authorization.  This
  188.           authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
  189.           recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for

  191.           FTP immediately (However Common Sense Software must still be
  192.           advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the

  198.           With the payment of your $27.50 registration fee, Common Sense
  199.           Software grants you the right to use one copy of the FAMILY TREE
  200.           PRINT UTILITY program (the "SOFTWARE") on a single terminal
  201.           connected to a single computer (i.e., with a single CPU).  You
  202.           may not use the SOFTWARE on a network or on more than one
  203.           computer or terminal at the same time.

  205.           The SOFTWARE is owned by Common Sense Software or its suppliers
  206.           and is protected by United States copyright laws and
  207.           international treaty provisions.  Therefore, you must treat the
  208.           SOFTWARE like any other copyrighted material (e.g. a book or
  209.           musical recording) EXCEPT that you may either 1) make one copy of
  210.

  215.           the SOFTWARE solely for backup or archival purposes, or 2)
  216.           transfer the SOFTWARE to a single hard disk provided you keep the

  220.           You may not rent or lease the SOFTWARE, but you may transfer it
  221.           and the accompanying written materials permanently provided you
  222.           retain no copies.  The recipient is subject to this license

  225.           Any copy of the FAMILY TREE PRINT UTILITY sold or copied in such
  226.           a manner as to violate the above conditions shall be subject to a
  227.           royalty fee of $100.00 for each violation.  Please keep your copy
  228.           of the SHAREWARE version so that you may give copies of it to

  232.                                       WARRANTY

  234.           Common Sense Software warrants that the magnetic media on which
  235.           the program is distributed is free from defects in materials and
  236.           workmanship for a period of 90 days.  Common Sense Software will
  237.           replace the defective media at no charge, provided you return the
  238.           original product diskette within 90 days from the date of
  239.           delivery.  This is your sole remedy for any breach of warranty.

  293.           FTP will run on most IBM or compatible computers with 640K of
  294.           RAM, PC-DOS or MS-DOS 2.1 or greater and two disk drives.  An IBM
  295.           AT or compatible with 640K of RAM and a hard disk are recommended
  296.           for large family history databases.

  299.                                     INTRODUCTION
  300.  
  301.           The FTP Family Tree Print program was created to assist in the
  302.           printing of genealogical information.  Version 1.20d supports the
  303.           FAMILY TIES Computer Genealogy Program, written by E. Neil
  304.           Wagstaff, Version 1.17 - Version 1.20.  Version 2.2d supports the
  305.           Personal Ancestral File Program, written by the LDS Church,
  306.           Version 2.1 - Version 2.2. Version GEDd works with any PAF-
  307.           compatible GEDCOM database representation.  FTP can be used with
  308.           a Family Ties, PAF or GEDCOM database to obtain a variety of
  309.           family printouts, wall charts and indexes.  Some of FTP's
  310.           capabilities are:
  311.  
  312.           1.Three Generation linked list printouts suitable for binding,
  313.             including double sided printing and an alphabetized cross-
  314.             referenced index.
  315.           2.Register Reports (Descendants), a textual representation of
  316.             your family history, including an alphabetized cross-
  317.             referenced index.
  318.           3.Family Group Sheets, similar to the Three Generation charts
  319.             but with greater detail, including an alphabetized cross-
  320.             referenced index.
  321.           4.Family history Wall Chart containing ALL PERSONS in your
  322.             Family History database, also including an alphabetized cross-
  323.             referenced index.
  324.           5.Ancestor and Descendant Wall Charts, including an alphabetized
  325.             cross-referenced index.

  337.             Data Communications (GEDCOM) format so that it may be exported
  338.             to other programs.  FTP's GEDCOM export feature has now been
  339.             officially certified by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
  340.             Day Saints for submission of GEDCOM data for the Ancestral
  341.             File database.
  342.           9.Customization capabilities to adapt the FTP printing system to
  343.             any type of printer, including Post Script printers.

  345.           This manual is divided into the following sections.  The first
  346.           part provides installation and set-up information so you can get
  347.           FTP running on your Family History database.  A brief description
  348.           of the FTP Main Menu is also provided so that you can start and
  349.           exit the FTP program.  Next, the database perusal system is
  350.           presented, so that you can learn how to traverse along your
  351.           family tree and obtain Three Generation charts and displays.  The
  352.           features of the Three Generation chart printing system are then
  353.           detailed, allowing you to print selected charts as desired.
  354.           Next, the manual presents a description of the Family History
  355.           Wall Chart system, a new and interesting way to "get the BIG
  356.           picture" on your family history.  Finally, the manual concludes
  357.           with a description of the Register Report writing capability, a
  358.           unique way to print descendant information in textual paragraphs,
  359.           and Family Group sheets.

  361.           While FTP was designed to be operated by the computer novice with
  362.           little training, please take the time to read this manual and get
  363.           to know FTP's capabilities.  It is best to try some of the
  364.           commands with FTP as you read along, so that you can understand
  365.           exactly how they work.  Don't worry about damaging your database
  366.           by accident; FTP was designed to use your database in a read-only
  367.           mode.  This means that FTP is unable to alter your database in
  368.           any way; it can only display data previously created by your
  369.           genealogy program.

  372.                        NEW FEATURES IN FTP 1.20d / 2.2d / GEDd
  373.  
  374.           This section of the manual lists the new features which are now
  375.           available in FTP with this release.  Experienced FTP users may
  376.           only need to read this section, along with the descriptions of
  377.           the new commands, in order to become fully familiar with this new
  378.           version.  First-time users can ignore this section and resume
  379.           with the installation instructions.

  381.           GEDCOM Extensions
  382.  
  383.           FTP's GEDCOM export capability is now available in all three
  384.           versions of FTP (Family Ties, PAF, and GEDCOM).  Now all versions
  385.

  390.           of the program will allow you to create a GEDCOM file consisting
  391.           of only part of your database (as represented on the last Wall
  392.           Chart), or your entire database.  This GEDCOM capability has been
  393.           certified by the LDS church for submissions to Ancestral File,
  394.           and complies with the GEDCOM Draft Release 5.0 Specification,
  395.           dated December 31, 1991.

  397.           Register Reports
  398.  
  399.           FTP now contains yet another new printed report, called the
  400.           Modified Register format report.  This report is used in place of
  401.           a Descendants Chart, where all information known about a person
  402.           is formatted in easy-to-read paragraphs.  An alphabetized index
  403.           is also included to aid in locating individuals in the narrative.

  405.           Family Group Sheets
  406.  
  407.           FTP can now also print Family Group sheets, a one page report
  408.           containing extensive information on a complete family.  These
  409.           pages are similar to the Three Generation Charts, but contain
  410.           greater detail on each family and print in compressed print (132
  411.           characters).
  412.  
  413.           Wall Chart Improvements
  414.  
  415.           Many additions have been made to the Wall Chart generation
  416.           section of FTP.  First, you may now select the Box Width to be
  417.           used in printing individuals on the chart.  Using a larger box
  418.           width (the default is 11 characters) permits longer names to be
  419.           printed inside the box.  You may also now save the last generated
  420.           wall chart to disk for recovery and printing later.  Simply
  421.           recall the file containing the Wall Chart positioning locations
  422.           and the people will be returned to the proper positions for
  423.           printing, index generation, GEDCOM export, etc.
  424.  
  425.           Performance Improvements
  426.  
  427.           Many improvements have been made to the FTP Wall Chart generation
  428.           utilities, pedigree collapse checking, and conversion programs to
  429.           improve performance.  In some cases Wall Chart generation times
  430.           are up to 10 times shorter than Version C!  This dramatic
  431.           increase in speed could only be accomplished by consuming more of
  432.           your computer's RAM memory.  Effective this release, it is
  433.           suggested that you have 640K of RAM to run FTP.
  434.  
  435.           Bug Fixes
  436.  
  437.           Fixed in Version D were the following: better support for early
  438.           IBM monochrome displays which were unable to support highlighting
  439.           or reverse video; full 5-digit support in all number fields for
  440.           those of you with over 10,000 people in your database (FTP now
  441.           supports 32,700 people in a single database); a majority of the
  442.           DOS errors which occur when problems develop with the printer are
  443.           now trapped by FTP, rather than having you "bounced out" to DOS
  444.  
  445.

  449.           in a program crash; better support for laser printers; and a
  450.           special way to invoke FTP if your computer's BIOS does not
  451.           properly support video scrolling.  We also heard your suggestions
  452.           for more detailed directions on selecting "Starting" and
  453.           "Terminating" people for Wall Chart generation, and have included
  454.           more information on this topic in the manual.

  456.           If you have a problem, please send us a copy of your database on
  457.           disk, and a description of the problem.  We will fix the problem
  458.           and return a new version of FTP to you as soon as possible.
  459.

  461.                                     INSTALLATION
  462.  
  463.           Installation of the FTP program is easy, even for the novice
  464.           computer user.  Please find the section for your computer
  465.           configuration (Floppy drives or Hard Disk), and proceed with the
  466.           directions that follow.
  467.  
  468.           Installing FTP 1.20d (Family Ties) On A Floppy Disk System
  469.  
  470.           Copy the programs FTP.EXE and FTCONV.EXE to your Family Ties
  471.           program disk. If there is insufficient space to hold the
  472.           programs, copy them to your data diskette.  Single disk drive
  473.           users must simply swap their diskettes at the appropriate time.
  474.           Run the FTCONV.EXE program to make a copy of your .DA1 database
  475.           file and reformat it into a .FTP file suitable for use by FTP.
  476.           After FTCONV has made the new FTP database file, you may choose
  477.           to delete FTCONV.EXE to save space.  However, FTCONV should be
  478.           run whenever you have modified your database using Family Ties
  479.           and wish to see these changes in FTP.  You may then run the FTP
  480.           program.  To run the program, install your floppies as you
  481.           normally would to run Family Ties, select the floppy drive where
  482.           FTP is located (A: or B:), and type FTP.  The FTP program will
  483.           then begin to search for the necessary database files it needs to
  484.           run.  If it is unable to find the files, you will be prompted to
  485.           tell FTP where the files can be found.
  486.  
  487.           Installing FTP 1.20d (Family Ties) On A Hard Disk System
  488.  
  489.           Copy the programs FTP.EXE and FTCONV.EXE from your FTP Master
  490.           Diskette to the sub-directory where your Family Ties program and
  491.           data reside.  Run the FTCONV.EXE program to make a copy of your
  492.           .DA1 database file and convert it to a .FTP database for use by
  493.           FTP.  You must run the FTCONV program each time you change data
  494.           using Family Ties and wish to see those changes in FTP.  To run
  495.           FTP, select the appropriate sub-directory using the Change
  496.           Directory command (CD \dirspec), and invoke the program by typing
  497.           FTP.

  499.           Installing FTP 2.2d (PAF) On A Floppy Disk System
  500.  
  501.           Copy the programs PAFP.EXE and PAFCONV.EXE to any PAF program
  502.           disk. If there is insufficient space to hold the programs, copy

  510.           program to make a copy of your INDIV2.DAT database file and

  513.           delete PAFCONV.EXE to save space.  However, PAFCONV should be run
  514.           whenever you have modified your database using PAF and wish to

  567.           There are now several optional ways to run the FTP program.
  568.           First, if you have a monochrome monitor, start FTP using the "/M"
  569.           command (Example: you would type "FTP /M" for the Family Ties
  570.           version, "PAFP /M" for the PAF version, or "GEDP /M" for the
  571.           GEDCOM version).  If you encounter difficulties in generating a
  572.           Wall Chart with the FTP program (your computer "hangs", or fails
  573.           to respond to any keystrokes), invoke FTP with the "/BIOS"
  574.           command.  This command tells FTP to minimize its use of special
  575.           BIOS calls which some older systems cannot support.
  576.  
  577.           Now that you have installed and invoked the FTP program, the
  578.           program should begin organizing your family history database for
  579.           display purposes.  This process can take some time, depending
  580.           upon the size of your database and the speed of your computer.
  581.           When this is completed, the message, "Press Any Key" appears. By
  582.           pressing a key, you will enter FTP's MAIN menu and the Three
  583.           Generation chart corresponding to your first database record will
  584.           be displayed.  To exit the FTP program, type 'Q' for Quit, and
  585.           you will be returned to DOS.
  586.  
  587.           The display is organized in the following manner.  Each page
  588.           represents a single family, containing the parents and their
  589.           children.  In addition, the parent's parents are included so that
  590.           you may see how various families are linked together. The display
  591.           is organized so that the husband appears in the left center box,
  592.           and the wife in the right center box.  Page numbers located
  593.           beneath these two boxes indicate the page number of an other
  594.           marriage for that person (shown as {xxx}).  Birth, death, and
  595.           marriage date information is provided for these individuals.
  596.           Should the identity of a husband or wife be unknown, that
  597.           particular box will remain empty.
  598.  
  599.           Parents of the husband and wife appear in the upper row of boxes.
  600.           A page number is also provided for each set of parents
  601.           corresponding to the page where their family will be displayed.
  602.           This allows the user to locate and trace a desired family
  603.           lineage.
  604.  
  605.           Children appear on a single line below the parents.  FTP is
  606.           designed to display 5 children at a time.  Should there be more
  607.           than 5 children, the lower line of the children's box will say
  608.           "More Children", and other children can be viewed by pressing "M"
  609.           for More children.  When all children have been displayed,
  610.           pressing "M" again will return to the display using the first 5
  611.           children.  Birth, death, and page number information is provided
  612.           for each child.  It should be noted that some children will not
  613.           have a page number next to their names.  This is due to the fact
  614.           that these children have no spouses or children themselves, so
  615.           they need only appear on the parent's page.

  617.           On color displays, certain people in the database will be
  618.           displayed in green or red, rather than white.  These colors are
  619.           used in conjunction with the tree "pruning" capabilities included
  620.           in FTP.  Green indicates the starting person that will be used
  621.

  626.           for all wall charts (all people, descendants, or ancestors).  Red
  627.           is used to indicate terminating people, which are selected to

  631.           persons can be found in the command descriptions below (see the
  632.           Tree command).  On monochrome displays, these people will be
  633.           shown in reverse video.

  636.                                 PERUSING THE DATABASE
  637.  
  638.           Now that you have learned how to start and stop the FTP program,
  639.           it is time to learn how to use the database perusal system. This
  640.           system was designed to allow you to follow certain family lineage
  641.           easily.
  642.  
  643.           Details Display
  644.  
  645.           The first command is the Details command, executed by typing the
  646.           letter "D" at the MAIN menu.  The details command offers
  647.           additional detailed information on the selected husband/wife pair
  648.           such as record number, birth, christening, death, burial and
  649.           marriage information.  The combination of the Three Generation
  650.           chart and the Details display is used to make one page for
  651.           printing.
  652.  
  653.           Jump to Next Page
  654.  
  655.           The Next command (type "N" from the MAIN menu) allows you to jump
  656.           to the next page number.  When you have reached the end of your
  657.           database, the Next command jumps back to the first page.
  658.  
  659.           Jump to New Page
  660.  
  661.           The Jump command (type "J" from the MAIN menu) allows you to jump
  662.           to any desired page number.  This is useful when you know the
  663.           page number where a particular family is displayed.  In addition,
  664.           the page number of each child or parent is displayed on the Three
  665.           Generation chart.  You may use the Jump command to move to these
  666.           particular page numbers as desired.
  667.  
  668.           Jump to Husband's or Wife's Parents
  669.  
  670.           Several commands are also available to jump to specific locations
  671.           along the family tree.  The Husband's parents command (type "H"
  672.           from the MAIN menu) selects the husband's parents to be displayed
  673.           in Three Generation form, moving their information from the upper
  674.           left corner of the screen to the center. Likewise, the Wife's
  675.           parents command ("W" from the MAIN menu) selects the wife's
  676.           parents information in the upper right corner of the display to
  677.           appear in the center.  These traversals are also possible by
  678.           using the Jump command, and entering the page number displayed by
  679.           their information.

  687.           A specific child may be selected by using the Child command ("C"

  691.           child number is required).  You may not select children which do
  692.           not have a valid page number.

  694.           Jump to Another Marriage

  696.           You may jump to a husband or wife's Other Marriage by using the
  697.           OtherMar command ("O" from the MAIN menu).  If both husband and
  698.           wife have other marriages you will be asked to select the desired
  699.           marriage by pressing "H" or "W".

  701.           Spend a few moments moving around your database using the Jump,
  702.           Hpar, Wpar, OtherMar and Child commands.  Use the Details command
  703.           to view additional information on the selected family. Remember,
  704.           you cannot damage your database using the FTP program, as FTP
  705.           only reads your database.  It cannot write or otherwise modify
  706.           your data.

  709.                                 PRINTING THE DATABASE

  711.           This portion of the FTP reference focuses on the printing
  712.           capabilities.  Several types of charts may be printed by
  713.           selecting the Print command ("P" from the MAIN menu).  This will
  714.           invoke the PRINT menu.  Throughout this section, the menu being
  715.           described will be shown in a specific format.  This format will
  716.           be explained with the use of the following example:
  717.  
  718.           PRINT | CONFIG | CHARACTER TRANSLATION
  719.  
  720.           This means that to select this menu, you first select "Print"
  721.           from the MAIN menu, followed by "Config" from the PRINT menu, and
  722.           finally "Character Translation" from the PRINT | CONFIG menu.  In
  723.           order to enter numbers when prompted, use the numeric keys and
  724.           then press [ENTER]. If the [ESC] key is pressed, the original
  725.           value will be restored.

  727.           PRINT Menu

  729.           The PRINT menu allows you to print your database in various
  730.           formats. Pressing "P" from the MAIN menu will cause the PRINT
  731.           menu to be displayed. The PRINT menu presents the options listed
  732.           below.

  734.           Printing Three Generation Charts

  736.           Pressing "T" from the PRINT menu will display the PRINT | THREE

  757.           REGISTER REPORT menu.  This menu allows the user to print the
  758.           descendant history of a starting person, along with an

  764.           Pressing "G" from the PRINT menu will display the PRINT | GROUP
  765.           SHEETS menu.  This menu allows the user to print family group

  771.           Pressing "C" will display the PRINT | CONFIG menu. This menu
  772.           allows the user to configure certain key character values in
  773.           order to draw boxes and initialize the printer.

  776.           menu.  For the most part, the [ESC] key is used in the program to
  777.           return to the next menu level, terminating finally at the MAIN

  781.                           PRINTING THREE GENERATION CHARTS

  783.           PRINT | THREE GENERATION CHARTS menu

  785.           The PRINT | THREE GENERATION CHARTS menu allows the user to print
  786.           the contents of the database in Three Generation chart format.
  787.           This format allows every person in the database to be printed.
  788.           Each chart occupies a printed page.  The chart is in the same
  789.           format as the display screen (described earlier).  The only
  790.           differences are that the printed chart allows up to twenty
  791.           children to be displayed, and the Details chart, which can be
  792.           displayed by pressing the "D" key from the MAIN menu, occupies
  793.           the bottom of the page on the printed chart.  Each person printed
  794.           on the chart has cross references to other charts on which they
  795.           appear.  The cross references are given between the braces
  796.           ({xxxxx}), where "xxxxx" would indicate the page number.

  802.           References are given for the parents, other marriages and
  803.           children.  The entire database may be easily examined with the
  804.           use of a complete set of these charts.  Pressing "T" from the
  805.           PRINT menu will cause the PRINT | THREE GENERATION CHARTS menu to
  806.           be displayed.  The options of the PRINT | THREE GENERATION CHARTS
  807.           menu are defined in the following paragraphs.
  808.  
  809.           Printer Mode Command
  810.  
  811.           Pressing "P" from the PRINT | THREE GENERATION CHARTS menu will
  812.           allow the user to enter a printer control string that will place
  813.           the printer into the mode desired for printing Three Generation
  814.           charts.  This printer control string will be sent to the printer
  815.           prior to printing any of the Three Generation charts.  When the
  816.           program has completed the printing of these charts, it will send
  817.           the "Initialize" printer control string to the printer.  The
  818.           "Initialize" printer control string may be modified from the
  819.           PRINT | CONFIG menu.  All printer control strings should be
  820.           entered as a list of ASCII codes separated by commas (Example:
  821.           "15,27,48" Note: do NOT enter the double quote characters.) Press
  822.           [ENTER] when the string has been completely entered or press
  823.           [ESC] to restore the original string.
  824.  
  825.           Set Left Margin
  826.  
  827.           Pressing "L" will allow the user to enter a value for the left
  828.           margin.  The program will add this number of spaces to the left
  829.           of the printed chart on all pages.
  830.  
  831.           Set Binding Spaces
  832.  
  833.           Pressing "B" will allow the user to enter a value for the binding
  834.           spaces.  The program will add this number of spaces to the left
  835.           of the printed chart only on right hand pages.  The right hand
  836.           pages will have this number of spaces plus the spaces specified
  837.           for Left Margin added to the left of the chart. However, left
  838.           hand pages (double sided printing) will have only the left margin
  839.           spaces added to the left of the chart.  Note that if double sided
  840.           printing is not selected, then all pages are right hand pages and
  841.           the binding spaces will be added.
  842.  
  843.           Select Double Sided Printing
  844.  
  845.           Pressing "D" will toggle double sided printing on or off.  If
  846.           double sided printing is selected, then all odd (right hand)
  847.           pages will be printed first and the user will be prompted to
  848.           reverse the paper.  Once the paper has been reversed, the user
  849.           can press any key and the program will print the even (left hand)
  850.           pages on the back of the odd pages.  Page 2 will print on the
  851.           reverse side of page 1, etc.  See the description of left margin
  852.           and binding spaces presented above for positioning the charts
  853.           differently on left and right hand pages.

  855.           Print Font Size

  861.           Pressing "F" will select the font size if FTP is being used with
  862.           a PostScript printer.  PostScript printers can be selected from

  866.           information on PostScript printing.

  868.           Print Alignment Line

  870.           Pressing "A" will cause an alignment line to be printed.  This
  871.           line will obey the left margin and binding space settings
  872.           currently in effect.  If double sided printing is selected, then
  873.           two lines will be printed; one for the left hand pages and one
  874.           for the right hand pages.

  876.           Print This (Current) Chart
  877.  
  878.           Pressing "T" will cause one Three Generation chart to be printed.
  879.           The chart will contain the information that is currently
  880.           displayed on the screen, plus the Details screen associated with
  881.           that page.
  882.  
  883.           Print a Range of Charts in the Database
  884.  
  885.           Pressing "R" will cause a range of Three Generation charts to be
  886.           printed.  You will be prompted for the range of pages desired.
  887.           This command utilizes the double sided printing option (if
  888.           enabled) to print a chart set on both sides of the paper.
  889.  
  890.           Print All Charts in the Database
  891.  
  892.           Pressing "C" will print a complete set of Three Generation
  893.           charts.  This command utilizes the double sided printing option
  894.           (if enabled) to print a chart set on both sides of the paper.
  895.  
  896.           Print Modified Charts

  898.           Pressing "M" will cause all Three Generation charts whose
  899.           information has been modified since a certain date to be printed.
  900.           The user will be prompted to enter a date, which must be entered
  901.           in the format "DD-MMM-YYYY", where "DD" is the day (01-31), "MMM"
  902.           is the month (Jan-Dec) and "YYYY" is the four digit year (1989).
  903.           All charts which contain information that has been modified on or
  904.           after that date will be printed.  This command is currently
  905.           supported only in FTP for Family Ties, as PAF and GEDCOM records
  906.           do not contain a field with the date the record was last updated.
  907.  
  908.           Print Three Generation Chart Index
  909.  
  910.           Pressing "I" will display the PRINT | THREE GENERATION CHARTS |
  911.           INDEX menu.  This menu is described in the section entitled,
  912.           "PRINTING AN INDEX".  It allows the user to print an alphabetized
  913.           index to the Three Generation charts.

  938.           The PRINT | WALL CHART menu allows the user to print the contents
  939.           of the database in Wall chart format.  This format prints each
  940.           person in the database on a single Wall chart with no crossed
  941.           lines.  Lines are drawn on the chart to connect spouses and also
  942.           to connect parents with their children.  This version of the
  943.           program removes the crossed lines produced by Pedigree Collapses
  944.           which appeared in earlier versions.  The Wall chart will be
  945.           printed across physical page boundaries.  The pages must then be
  946.           trimmed and taped together to form the complete chart.  Pressing
  947.           "W" from the PRINT menu will cause the PRINT | WALL CHART menu to
  948.           be displayed.  The PRINT | WALL CHART menu options are described
  949.           in the following paragraphs.
  950.  
  951.           Enable/Disable Horizontal Spacing
  952.  
  953.           Pressing "S" will toggle the horizontal spacing on or off.  If
  954.           horizontal spacing is on, then a person will not be placed on the
  955.           chart directly next to another person.  Instead, a blank space
  956.           will be inserted between them.  Spouses will still be placed next
  957.           to one another, but people related in ANY OTHER WAY will be
  958.           separated by a blank space.  Note that turning on horizontal
  959.           spacing will cause the chart to be wider, but it will be much
  960.           easier to read.
  961.  
  962.           Set Horizontal Optimization
  963.  
  964.           Pressing "H" will allow the user to enter a value for the
  965.           horizontal optimization.  The exact meaning of this item is
  966.           closely related to the Wall chart generation algorithm and not
  967.           easily explained.  Increasing the value of this item will tend to
  968.           trade horizontal space for vertical space.  The user should
  969.           experiment with it to find the most convenient size for the
  970.           chart.  The usefulness of this item will vary depending on the
  971.           structure of family relationships in the database.  If the chart
  972.           is generated, and it is very large horizontally and short
  973.  
  974.

  988.           information.  Use of this command may cause your Wall Chart to
  989.           print with crossed lines and other irregularities under certain
  990.           circumstances.

  992.           Chart Type

  994.           The chart type can be selected by pressing "C" and toggling
  995.           through the available choices.  Chart types currently supported
  996.           are the All Persons wall chart, Ancestors wall chart, and
  997.           Descendants wall chart.  All charts begin with the defined
  998.           starting person and continue outwards.
  999.  
  1000.           Generate Wall Chart
  1001.  
  1002.           Pressing "G" will instruct the program to generate a wall chart
  1003.           layout using the layout options described above.  When this
  1004.           command is entered, the menu will disappear and the program's
  1005.           progress will be shown by a chart outline on the screen.  This
  1006.           outline is drawn using a box for each person placed on the chart.
  1007.           If the database is large, then only a portion of the outline may
  1008.           be shown on the screen.  The bottom line of the screen will
  1009.           contain a display of the maximum row and maximum column positions
  1010.           needed.  This display will change as new persons are placed on
  1011.           the chart.  After all persons are placed on the chart, a vertical
  1012.           optimization step will begin.  During this step, all people are
  1013.           examined to see if they can be moved upward on the chart without
  1014.           causing crossed lines.  The Wall chart generation may take a
  1015.           substantial period of time to execute if the database is large,
  1016.           so be patient.  NOTE: A test is performed after the chart is
  1017.           generated and optimized to determine that no two people are
  1018.           placed in the same position.  If this occurs, a Collision Error
  1019.           will be reported.  Write down the numbers of the individuals who
  1020.           have collided, and send this information (along with a copy of
  1021.           your database) to the authors. We will make the necessary
  1022.           corrections in the program to ensure that the program will
  1023.           function with your database.  After the generation is completed,
  1024.           a new menu will automatically be invoked, called the PRINT | WALL
  1025.           CHART | OPTIONS menu.  This menu is described below.
  1026.  
  1027.           Return to Previous Wall Chart
  1028.  
  1029.           In the event that you make a mistake and exit the PRINT | WALL
  1030.           CHART | OPTIONS menu prematurely, you can return to this menu and
  1031.           bypass the process of having to regenerate the chart by pressing

  1225.                          PEDIGREE COLLAPSES AND WALL CHARTS

  1227.           This section provides additional information on how FTP deals
  1228.           with Pedigree Collapses in the generation of Wall Charts for
  1229.           Ancestors, Descendants, or All Persons.  The section consists of
  1230.           a definition of Pedigree Collapse, followed by how FTP deals with
  1231.           it during database conversion, Wall Chart generation, and other
  1232.           functions.

  1234.           What Is Pedigree Collapse?
  1235.  
  1236.           Pedigree Collapse is the term used to describe the situation
  1237.           where people are related in more than one way.  Common examples
  1238.           of Pedigree Collapse include: the marriage of cousins (they are
  1239.           spouses and cousins), two brothers from one family who marry two
  1240.           sisters from another family (they are double in-laws), or a woman
  1241.           who marries a man, then later marries his brother (the men are
  1242.           both a spouse and an in-law).  The current version of Family Ties
  1243.           (Version 1.19g) does not allow the genealogist to enter Pedigree
  1244.           Collapse information; however, both PAF and GEDCOM
  1245.           representations do permit these multiple relationships to exist.
  1246.  
  1247.           What Is The Problem With Pedigree Collapse?
  1248.  
  1249.           The FTP Wall Chart generation software is designed to display
  1250.           your family history information in a clear and concise manner.
  1251.           The Wall Charts were designed so that no lines would cross on the
  1252.           page, providing a clear understanding of each family and its
  1253.           relationships.  Pedigree Collapses would cause crossed lines on
  1254.           the Wall Charts, making them difficult to read.
  1255.  
  1256.           How Does FTP Solve This Problem?
  1257.  
  1258.           FTP uses a two step approach towards Pedigree Collapses.  First,
  1259.           Pedigree Collapses are detected during the conversion process
  1260.           (FTCONV, PAFCONV, or GED2FTP), and adjustments are made in the
  1261.           database to permit proper Wall Chart printing.  These collapses
  1262.           are reported during conversion time simply for the user's
  1263.           benefit; they do not reflect problems with either the user's
  1264.

  1270.           not affect the Three Generation Charts, Register Reports, Family
  1271.           Group Sheets, Indexes, or GEDCOM export capabilities of FTP.

  1273.           Next, Pedigree Collapses are printed on the Wall Charts in a
  1274.           unique way.  Each person with a Pedigree Collapse appears on a
  1275.           Wall Chart twice; once as a child under their parents (with no
  1276.           spouse or siblings), and once as a parent with a spouse and
  1277.           children (but no mother or father).  The Row and Column locations
  1278.           of this person appear in the outline of the box using "Rxxx
  1279.           Cxxx", where "Rxxx" is the Row number and "Cxxx" is the column
  1280.           number.  When the Row and Column locations are zero ("R0 C0")
  1281.           this means that the person does not appear elsewhere on the chart
  1282.           and that this part of the family line has been terminated.  Using
  1283.           the "I"nclude Pedigree Collapses command from the PRINT | WALL
  1284.           CHART menu will include the second listing of each person who is
  1285.           a Pedigree Collapse, but this may sometimes result in charts with
  1286.           irregularities.

  1289.                               PRINTING REGISTER REPORTS

  1291.           PRINT | REGISTER REPORT menu

  1293.           The PRINT | REGISTER REPORT menu allows the user to print a
  1294.           descendants history narrative in Modified Register format.  This
  1295.           format allows every descendant of the starting person in the
  1296.           database to be printed.  Each person (and their spouse, if
  1297.           present) is printed in one paragraph.  The children of this
  1298.           person are then listed, with any children that also have children
  1299.           printed again in a separate paragraph in the next generation.
  1300.           Children which are continued in the next generation have a "+"
  1301.           sign printed in front of their number.  This indicates that this
  1302.           family line continues into the next generation.  The report is
  1303.           organized by generation, and descendants are grouped by families
  1304.           as well as by generation.  Pressing "R" from the PRINT menu will
  1305.           cause the PRINT | REGISTER REPORT menu to be displayed.  The
  1306.           options of the PRINT | REGISTER REPORT menu are defined in the
  1307.           following paragraphs.

  1419.           defined in the following paragraphs.

  1640.           This menu allows the user to select printer options which are
  1641.           used for ALL printing operations.  Printing options which are
  1642.           specific to a particular printing format can be changed when
  1643.           selecting options for that format.  Pressing "C" from the PRINT
  1644.           menu will cause the PRINT | CONFIG menu to be displayed.  The
  1645.           PRINT | CONFIG menu will present options which are documented in
  1646.           the following paragraphs.
  1647.  
  1648.           Set Output Device
  1649.  
  1650.           All printouts may now be re-directed to a variety of output
  1651.           devices, including the LPTx: ports, the COMx: ports, and
  1652.           filenames.  To specify a port (such as LPT1:), type in the name
  1653.           WITHOUT THE COLON.  Filenames can be selected by typing the full
  1654.           path, name and extension.  Change the output device by pressing
  1655.           "D" and entering your device selection. The default device is
  1656.           "PRN", the system printer.
  1657.  
  1658.           Set Printer Default Initialization
  1659.  
  1660.           Pressing "I" will allow the user to enter a printer control
  1661.           string that will place the printer into its default state.  The
  1662.           default state is that which the user wants the printer to be in
  1663.           when this program is terminated.  This string should also clear
  1664.           the printer buffer of characters because it is used to abort
  1665.           printing.  This string defaults to the value used by most
  1666.           IBM/EPSON compatible printers.
  1667.  
  1668.           Set Begin Bold Character String
  1669.  
  1670.           Pressing "B" will allow the user to enter a printer control
  1671.           string that will cause the printer to print bold characters. This
  1672.

  1680.           Set End Bold Character String

  1684.           (not bolded).  This string is defaulted for use with IBM/Epson
  1685.           compatible printers.

  1687.           Post Script Printer Support
  1688.  
  1689.           Pressing "O" will toggle whether FTP should convert all printed
  1690.           output into PostScript language.  This setting should only be
  1691.           enabled if the printer to be used supports the PostScript command
  1692.           language.  See below for information on using PostScript with
  1693.           FTP.
  1694.  
  1695.           Set Paper Type
  1696.  
  1697.           Pressing "P" will toggle the type of paper to "Continuous" or
  1698.           "Single sheet".  If "Single sheet" is selected the program will
  1699.           pause between pages to allow the user to position the paper.
  1700.  
  1701.           Save Printer Configurations
  1702.  
  1703.           Pressing "S" will save all printer configuration information used
  1704.           by the FTP program for wall charts, indexes, and three generation
  1705.           charts.  This configuration file is named PRTOPT.FTP, and is
  1706.           automatically loaded when you run the FTP program.  If the file
  1707.           cannot be found, a series of defaults are selected which support
  1708.           most Epson-compatible dot matrix printers which utilize the IBM
  1709.           character set.
  1710.  
  1711.           Set Character Translation Table
  1712.  
  1713.           Pressing "C" will display the PRINT | CONFIG | CHARACTER
  1714.           TRANSLATION menu.  This menu is described below.
  1715.  
  1716.           [ESC] - Return To Print Menu
  1717.  
  1718.           Pressing [ESC] will cancel the PRINT | CONFIG menu and return to
  1719.           the PRINT menu.

  1721.           PRINT | CONFIG | CHARACTER TRANSLATION menu

  1723.           This menu allows the user to select the ASCII codes sent to the
  1724.           printer for special characters used on the printed charts.
  1725.           Pressing "C" from the PRINT | CONFIG menu will cause the PRINT |
  1726.           CONFIG | CHARACTER TRANSLATION menu to be displayed. Whenever the
  1727.           program must print one of these characters, it will substitute
  1728.           the ASCII code specified here.  This allows use of virtually any
  1729.           printer regardless of its capabilities.  If your printer cannot
  1730.           print the IBM graphics characters, then choose alternate
  1731.

  1736.           characters to be printed when these graphics characters are
  1737.           required.  For example, replace the horizontal line character
  1738.           (ASCII=196) with the minus sign (ASCII=45).  The format of each
  1739.           item in the menu is as follows.  The highlighted character is the
  1740.           key which must be pressed to change the ASCII code for this
  1741.           character.  The IBM graphics character is next, followed by the
  1742.           equal ("=") character.  Following the equal character is a three
  1743.           digit number which corresponds to the ASCII code that will be
  1744.           sent to the printer when the program must print this IBM graphics
  1745.           character.  Pressing any alphabetic character (A-Z) will allow
  1746.           the user to change the ASCII code which is sent to the printer
  1747.           for the corresponding IBM graphics character.
  1748.  
  1749.           [ESC] - Return to Printer Configuration Menu
  1750.  
  1751.           Pressing [ESC] will cancel the PRINT | CONFIG | CHARACTER
  1752.           TRANSLATION menu and return to the PRINT | CONFIG menu.

  1755.                      PRUNING THE FAMILY TREE FOR CHART PRINTING
  1756.  
  1757.           Tree Pruning
  1758.  
  1759.           The Tree command ("T" at the Main Menu) is used to select
  1760.           individuals for the Wall Chart printing capabilities of FTP
  1761.           described above.  The user is permitted to specify the starting
  1762.           person for a Wall Chart, as well as any number of terminating
  1763.           persons to "prune" family lines from a particular chart.
  1764.  
  1765.           The purpose of the Starting Person is to tell FTP which person is
  1766.           to be placed on the Wall Chart first.  For an Ancestor Chart,
  1767.           this is the youngest person who will appear on the chart.  For a
  1768.           Descendants Chart, this is the oldest person who will appear on
  1769.           the chart.  For an All Persons Chart, the selection of the
  1770.           Starting Person can impact the size and configuration of the
  1771.           chart.
  1772.  
  1773.           FTP begins generating a Wall Chart by beginning processing at the
  1774.           Starting Person.  The program then begins to explore the
  1775.           relationships this person has to others in the database, and
  1776.           places them on the chart accordingly.  As each additional person
  1777.           is placed on the chart, FTP then looks at their relationships to
  1778.           still others in the database.  The process continues until all
  1779.           persons have been placed on the chart.
  1780.  
  1781.           FTP places a person on the Wall Chart, then explores the
  1782.           following relationships:

  1785.                * Spouse
  1786.                * Other Marriages
  1787.                * Siblings
  1788.                * Father and/or Mother

  1794.           You may control how FTP investigates these relationships by the
  1795.           selection of Terminating People.  When you use the Terminate
  1796.           Person command from the TREE menu, FTP will discontinue
  1797.           processing this person (and their associated relationships) and
  1798.           will not place them on the Wall Chart.  However, a spouse is
  1799.           always placed on the chart, even if they are marked as a
  1800.           Terminating Person.  However, FTP will not explore the spouse's
  1801.           relationships and place those people on the chart.
  1802.  
  1803.           For example, suppose you want to generate an All Persons Wall
  1804.           Chart, but you do not wish to include your mother's family line.
  1805.           Simply make yourself the Starting Person and your mother a
  1806.           Terminating Person.  When FTP places you on the chart, it will
  1807.           eventually seek to place your parents on the chart.  Your mother
  1808.           will be placed on the chart (remember that spouses are always
  1809.           included), but the rest of her ancestral line will not be
  1810.           processed.  However, your father's line will continue to be
  1811.           processed.
  1812.  
  1813.           As a second example, suppose you desire to generate a Descendants
  1814.           Wall Chart, but you wish to stop after five generations.  Simply
  1815.           mark each person in the sixth generation as a Terminating Person,
  1816.           and they will not be included on the chart (or processed further)
  1817.           when FTP attempts to process the children of the fifth
  1818.           generation.
  1819.  
  1820.           The Starting / Terminating Person concept is very complex, and
  1821.           many possibilities can exist for modifying the shape of your Wall
  1822.           Charts.  There can also be more than one way to select a
  1823.           combination of Starting and Terminating people and still generate
  1824.           the desired chart.  The best advice which can be offered is to
  1825.           experiment with the feature and observe the resulting printouts,
  1826.           remembering to save Tree configurations which are useful.
  1827.  
  1828.           To set a starting or terminating person, use the commands defined
  1829.           above (see "PERUSING THE DATABASE") to display a page where the
  1830.           desired person appears as a husband, wife, or child.  Select the
  1831.           Tree command, then use the commands at the TREE menu as described
  1832.           below.
  1833.  
  1834.           Defining the Starting Person
  1835.  
  1836.           To define the starting person using the "B" (for Begin) command
  1837.           from the TREE menu.  You may then select the current Husband
  1838.           ("H"), Wife ("W"), or Child ("C") as the starting person.  All
  1839.           Wall Chart processing routines will then begin with this person,
  1840.           and this person will appear in Green on computers equipped with
  1841.           color displays.  The default starting person is the first person
  1842.           in the database.

  1844.           Selecting Terminating Persons
  1845.  
  1846.           A similar set of commands are available to select a terminating
  1847.           person using the "T" command from the TREE menu.  As in the
  1848.

  1853.           "B"egin command, you may then select the current Husband ("H"),
  1854.           Wife ("W"), or Child ("C") as a terminating person.  You may also
  1855.           select All children ("A").

  1857.           Resetting the Tree Configuration

  1859.           Typing "R", for Resetting the tree configuration, clears all
  1860.           terminating people and sets the starting person to be the first
  1861.           person in your database.  This returns you to the configuration
  1862.           FTP uses when the program is first started.

  1864.           Saving and Recovering Tree Configurations
  1865.  
  1866.           Tree configurations can be saved to a file (we suggest you use
  1867.           the .TRE extension) using the "S" (Save) command.  These tree
  1868.           files can also be recalled again using the "L" (Load) command.
  1869.           This permits the user to develop a tree configuration which is
  1870.           useful for chart making purposes, then save it for later use when
  1871.           the chart may be printed again.

  1874.                       GENEALOGICAL DATA COMMUNICATIONS (GEDCOM)
  1875.  
  1876.           The GEDCOM Command
  1877.  
  1878.           This command converts information in your genealogy database into
  1879.           a text file based on the Genealogical Data Communications
  1880.           Protocol, called GEDCOM.  As of this release, FTP supports all
  1881.           name, place, and date information used with regular and LDS
  1882.           Family Ties databases.  It also supports notes and information
  1883.           specific to an LDS-defined database, including temple codes and
  1884.           ordinance dates.  The PAF version of FTP supports all name, date,
  1885.           place, and note information for non-LDS databases.  The GEDCOM
  1886.           version of FTP supports all name, date, and place information for
  1887.           non-LDS databases.  This GEDCOM implementation has been certified
  1888.           for compliance with the Draft Release 5.0 standard, dated
  1889.           December 31, 1991.
  1890.  
  1891.           The GEDCOM text file can be used in a variety of ways. First,
  1892.           many programs (such as PAF and Roots III) will accept
  1893.           genealogical data supplied in this format, importing and
  1894.           converting it to their own database formats.  Secondly, many
  1895.           organizations will soon be accepting data in this format for
  1896.           archiving and submittal purposes.  While this capability has
  1897.           nothing to do with the printing capabilities of FTP, it was
  1898.           included as a "bonus" to aid users in transporting data between
  1899.           multiple programs.
  1900.  
  1901.           The GEDCOM command is selected by typing the letter "G" at the
  1902.           MAIN menu, which will cause the GEDCOM menu to be displayed.  The
  1903.           GEDCOM menu presents the options listed below.

  1905.           Selecting Upper and Lower Case for Names
  1906.

  1911.           Pressing "L" from the GEDCOM menu will select the method used to
  1912.           export the last name into the GEDCOM file.  Some genealogy
  1913.           programs (such as Personal Ancestral File) assume that the last
  1914.           name will be sent with the first letter of the last name
  1915.           capitalized, with all succeeding letters in the last name in
  1916.           lower case.  Use this command to modify the case of the last name
  1917.           as needed to properly export your genealogical data.  Permissible
  1918.           options are: leave the last name unchanged (name appears exactly
  1919.           as entered), capitalize the entire last name (as is done in many
  1920.           reports), or capitalize the first letter of the last name, with
  1921.           the rest of the last name placed in lower case.
  1922.  
  1923.           Selecting the Contents of the GEDCOM File
  1924.  
  1925.           Pressing the "C" key from the GEDCOM menu will select which
  1926.           individuals (with their associated name, place, date, marriage,
  1927.           and note information) will be included in the GEDCOM file.  You
  1928.           may choose to include All People in the database (the default
  1929.           configuration), or you may only include those individuals who
  1930.           appeared on the last Wall Chart which was generated.  This
  1931.           permits a easy method to export only part of a family tree, a
  1932.           selection of ancestors, a range of descendants, etc.
  1933.  
  1934.           Making the GEDCOM File
  1935.  
  1936.           Pressing "M" from the GEDCOM menu allows the user to create the
  1937.           GEDCOM file using the specified last name case selection and the
  1938.           specified list of individuals.  For the GEDCOM version of FTP,
  1939.           this file will be named "INDIVGED.GED".  For the PAF version of
  1940.           FTP, this file will be named "INDIV2.GED".  For the Family Ties
  1941.           version of FTP, this file will be named "<database>.GED", where
  1942.           <database> is the database name of your Family Ties database.
  1943.           When the GEDCOM file is completed, the user will be returned to
  1944.           the MAIN menu.

  1947.                        USING FTP WITH THE HP LASERJET PRINTER
  1948.  
  1949.           The following control codes may be used to control the HP
  1950.           LaserJet printer.  Selection of these codes may be done at the
  1951.           specified menu.  Remember to use the PRINT | CONFIG | Save Config
  1952.           command to save this configuration information permanently.
  1953.  
  1954.           For the Printer Initialization Mode in the PRINT | CONFIG menu,
  1955.             use: 27, 69, 27, 40, 115, 51, 84, 27, 40, 49, 48, 85, 27, 38,
  1956.             108, 54, 68.  This performs a Printer Reset, selects the
  1957.             Courier Font and the PC Symbol Set, and selects 6 lines per
  1958.             inch.
  1959.  
  1960.           For the Begin Bold Mode in the PRINT | CONFIG menu, use: 27, 40,
  1961.             115, 51, 66.  This selects Stroke Weight 3 (bold).

  1963.           For the End Bold Mode in the PRINT | CONFIG menu, use: 27, 40,
  1964.             115, 48, 66.  This selects Stroke Weight 0 (normal).

  1973.             characters per inch.

  1975.           For the Printer Mode in the PRINT | WALL CHART | OPTIONS menu,
  1976.             use: 27, 40, 115, 49, 54, 46, 54, 72, 27, 38, 108, 56, 68.
  1977.             This selects 16.6 characters per inch and 8 lines per inch.
  1978.             You will also need to change the number of Characters per Line
  1979.             to 132 and the number of Usable lines per page to 84.  If your
  1980.             printer requires a form feed at the end of each page, set the
  1981.             Total Lines per Page to 85, otherwise use 84.
  1982.  
  1983.           For the Printer Mode in the PRINT | GROUP SHEETS menu use: 27,
  1984.             40, 115, 49, 54, 46, 54, 72.  This selects 16.6 characters per
  1985.             inch, which permits 132 characters per line.
  1986.  
  1987.           These character codes have been verified on the HP LaserJet
  1988.           Series II using its own internal fonts.  If problems occur with
  1989.           these codes, remove any optional font cartridges, turn off the
  1990.           printer and turn it back on to reset its configuration.
  1991.  
  1992.           Some printers have problems with Device Time-out Errors in FTP.
  1993.           This can be cured by typing "MODE LPT1:,,P" , followed by the
  1994.           Return or Enter key.  This command eliminates time-out error
  1995.           reporting from the printer.  See your DOS manual for additional
  1996.           information.

  1999.                             WHAT TO DO IF PROBLEMS OCCUR
  2000.  
  2001.           This section of the manual highlights the most common problems
  2002.           found in FTP, along with some simple solutions to correct them.

  2006.           PROBLEM: My printouts have strange characters where the boxes
  2007.           should be.  How do I make the boxes print correctly?
  2008.  
  2009.           SOLUTION: On Epson-compatible printers this problem is solved by
  2010.           selecting the proper character set.  First, you may change the
  2011.           DIP switch inside your printer to use the IBM Character Set,
  2012.           rather than the default or ASCII or International Characters.
  2013.           Consult your printer manual for details on this switch's
  2014.           location, as this varies from printer to printer.  You may also
  2015.           select this character set using an escape sequence placed in the
  2016.           Printer Initialization Command in the PRINT | CONFIG menu.  Since
  2017.           this escape sequence is not standard for all Epson-compatible
  2018.           printers, please consult your printer manual for details.
  2019.  
  2020.           On HP LaserJet series compatible printers, you must select the
  2021.           correct character set from the front panel.  The default for
  2022.           these printers is usually the ROMAN-8 character set.  Instead,
  2023.           select the IBM-US character set.  This can also be done via an
  2024.

  2035.           try to start the FTP program.  How do I fix this?

  2037.           SOLUTION: Edit your CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of your
  2038.           hard disk (or on your boot disk if you run from floppies) and add
  2039.           the line "files=10".  This tells DOS that you are wish to have 10
  2040.           files open at once, which is enough for the FTP program.

  2042.           PROBLEM: I'm getting some unusual errors when running the
  2043.           program.  How can I send them to Common Sense Software to get
  2044.           them fixed?
