Pantry editor help information (as well as some info used elsewhere)
is shown in the menus you access with the F1 key. When you touch
one of first letters of the commands, or move the cursor bar to the
command, then added help for the function comes up. You may move
the cursor bar to a function and press enter to execute it in your
file, or you may press F10 or Esc to return to the Pantry and
perform the function by typing in the keys.
The commands used in the menus are compatible with two of the
most popular wordprocessors - WordStar and Multimate.

CURSOR MOVEMENT
The cursor command functions are straightforward. Some non-
obvious ones are discussed here.
Scrolling up or down causes the text to move but the cursor stays
on the same line.
Previous position moves the cursor to its position just prior to
the last command. For example, if you press F2 to Goto a certain
line, this command takes you back to the where you started from.
Goto position sends you to the position where position is the
number of characters from the textstart. Press return after you
enter the line number to go to.
Goto Blockstart and Blockend take you to positions you mark with
Block Function commands.
INSERT AND DELETE
Insert Line - inserts a line break at the cursor position.
Backspace - delete character left of cursor - characters to right
move one position to the left.
Delete character - deletes the character under the cursor and
moves any characters to the right of the cursor one position to
the left. The command works across line breaks, and can be used
to remove them.
Delete word - to right of cursor - use Paste to restore (see
Block Functions).
Delete to start of line - from cursor position - use Paste to
restore (see Block Functions).
Delete to end of line - from current cursor position - use Paste
to restore (See Block Functions).
Delete Line - Deletes the line containing the cursor and moves
any lines below one line up (use Paste to undo the command).
SEARCH AND REPLACE FUNCTIONS
These commands are pretty straightforward. You search for
strings up to 45 characters long which include any characters
including control characters.
Do what the Pop-up boxes indicate for Search and Replace.
Searching is case-insensitive.
Replace is similar to Search except you change the found string
with another up to 45 characters long. When you answer yes to
be prompted the cursor is placed at the start of the found string
and you answer y(yes) or (no) to replace. Press the r-key to
replace all occurences of the found string which follow.
Wordstar search and replace commands are the same as the ones
above except that user input is terminated by a cr (carriage
return) instead of the command keystroke (F3 or F4). This means
it is not possible to search for new lines.
Abort the commands with the Esc key.
BLOCK FUNCTIONS
The Wordstar commands in the second column of the menu require
you to mark a block by placing a block-begin marker before the
first character and a block-end marker after the last character
of the desired portion of the text. Once the block is marked,
you can copy move, delete, print, or write it to a file.
Multimate commands in the first column of the menu work on the
principle that you use the same key to begin and end a given
operation. For example, to copy a block press F5 to mark the
start of the block, move your cursor arrows to the end of the
block you wish to copy and press F5 again. Then move the cursor
arrows to the position you want to add the text to and press F5
a third time - the text is now copied. To abort Multimate block
command before it is completed, just press ESC. Move and Delete
work similarly.
Use the paste function to copy blocks multiple times. You may
edit the paste buffer to change copies before pasting if desired
(see Miscellaneous Help)
SPECIAL BLOCK FUNCTIONS
Copy Block to Printer - Block must be previously marked to work.
The block is left unchanged in the log.
Copy Block to File - Block must be previously marked to work -
the block is left unchanged in the file. A window pops up
prompting you for a file name. Press return and a list of file
names comes up if you wish to overwrite an existing one. To
specify a file name without an extension (last three characters)
follow the name with a dot.
Change Case of block - Changes case to upper, lower, or reverses
the case.
Copy Block from File - Invokes the auxiliary editor,
pops up a list of files to pick from (ones recently used) - or
choose - load files - to pop up a window where you enter a file
name (press enter here to examine all files in the current
directory). You may use Dos wildcards in the file name as well.
To read a file with no extension append a period to the file name.
You can use the Block Commands or use F9 to mark the beginning
and end of the block. When you mark the end block with F9, marked,
text transfers to your cursor position in you original log.
FILE COMMANDS - (Not implemented - use the F8, F9, Alt-F10 keys)
To create a new Pantry file - Use F8 from within any Pantry file:
Load the file name desired. Answer Yes to create the file new.
Use the Ctl F10 key to enlarge the Auxiliary Editor window if
desired. You must enter a few characters at least to establish
the file and press F10 to save it. To have it show up in the
Pantry do not enter an extension (last three characters before
'.' and enter a '.' after a maximum eight character name.
APPLICATION KEYS - See the 'Utility' Pantry file for more
detailed information on use of the Application Keys.
Find Patterns - Excerpts data from file you are working on
and places it in another file called 'pattern'.
Transfer Alt-P Log - This function renames the log file
created when you turn on the Alt-P log file function and
capture information from the foods generator in section 3
(or elsewhere). Toggle the Alt-P function off before using.
The log file (prolog.log) is renamed to any name you specify;
use a name with no extension to have it show up automatically
in the Pantry directory window. Use a name of comboXX to
have correct headings match the numbers from section 3 for
fiber, cholesterol, etc. (XX is any two numbers you give to
retain many different copies of your runs).
Change Directory - use any path including drive if desired.
Show Diskspace - shows the amount of available space on the
current drive and disk. This is important if you create any
files or "bak" files. You need room for any files you
create.
Show Free Memory - show memory available in the computer. This
may be important. If you plan to use the F8 key to overlay
the current file, and then use the F9 key to overlay this file
then you potentially will use up 64K (maximum file size)
times 3 (192K) more of memory. You may get want to check the
memory available before performing this operation. You can
get more memory by disabling any memory resident programs
you may have using memory.
Show Date/Time - shows date and time as set in your computer
Delete a File - give any name for a file to delete - if you
give an improper name the program will just return. If the
path is incorrect, then you get an error message. Also
you cannot delete a file you have up on the screen; when you
leave the file it resaves under the name on the status line.
Delete all '.bak' Files - Whenever you use the keys Alt-F10 to
save the current Pantry file or F8 to save a file using the
auxiliary editor, a '.bak' file is created to store the copy
of the file before any changes were made as an added backup
protection. These files may accumulate and take up disk space,
so we have this function which deletes ALL '.bak' files
in the directory you specify. If you specify no directory,
then '.bak' files in the current directory are deleted.
Copy all Pantry Files- This function allows you to easily backup
or restore all your Pantry files so you have added protection.
Also you can share you Pantry files with other enthusiasts.
The function copies all Pantry files (files with no extensions)
in the directory or disk you specify to the directory or disk
you specify.
E.g. 'c:\eatwell' for the from directory and 'a:' for the to
directory copies your files to a disk in drive 'a' (do not enter
quotes).
If the files do not fit on one disk, the process copies all the
files it can and then ends. You must then use the 'Alt-B' function
to copy those files for which room did not exist to another disk
where room exists. You get an error 1112 'Cannot write correct
number of bytes to file'. This is probably caused by a full disk.
Copy selected Pantry Files - Copies one file you specify at a time
from a disk or directory you specify to a disk or directory you
specify.
E.g. Copy from 'C:\eatwell' brings up Pantry files (files with
no extension) in directory 'C:\eatwell'. Use arrow keys to move
to the log you want to copy and press Return to copy it to the
disk and/or directory you specify.
Access DOS - Puts you in the Dos interactive mode where you can
run other programs. This process requires that the command
interpreter (Dos: Command.com; OS/2: Cmd.exe) is accessible.
In DOS if you install any memory resident programs while using
Alt-D, you probably will NOT be able to return to the Eatwell
system successfully since the memory resident program may take
up required memory. In OS/2 you are probably ok doing just
about anything.
Also, for those who have DOS less than 3.0, if you change
directory from the directory you are in when you press Alt-D,
you must change back to this same directory or else you will get
an error and may lose entered data in your log. The directory
is automatically changed back for DOS users 3.0 or higher.
MISCELLANEOUS COMMANDS -
Auxiliary Editor - Allows another file to be examined and changed
in addition to the log you are working on. Use this feature to
change headings for some of your logs. The file for changing
headings is "headcfg.dat". Use the Ctl-F10 key to enlarge the
window.
Edit Paste Buffer - Allows you to examine the last item changed
in other edit commands and further change it before using it
again in other functions. Any items you put in the paste buffer
remain there when you access another file. Thus you can clip
items from one file and place them in one or more other files
as you subsequently access them. This feature has many uses -
create a recipe using the combo file and then put it in the
paste buffer and access it as you create a shopping list and/or
diet plan. You easily do the reverse also create a diet plan,
put it in the paste buffer and access or view it as you create
recipes and shopping lists.
Auto Indentation - provides automatic indentation of successive
lines. When auto indentation is active, the cursor does not
return to column one when you press Enter. Instead, it returns
to the starting column of the line you just left. When auto
indentation is on the message 'Indent' shows up on the status
line; when its off the message disappears.
Insert mode - When entering text, you can choose between two
basic modes with the insert mode toggle. The status line
displays the insert mode (or overwrite mode).
Text mode - Allows you to toggle wordwrapping at the end of the
line on and off. When On words wrap to the next line from the
previous line if they are to long. This is handy for adding
lines and makes for faster typing of long lines in text. When
off you go to the next line by pressing the return key.
Lower/Upper/Reverse case word - use these to change the case of
a single word.
Exit Editor - F10 saves the currently edited log to disk before
going back to the main menu. The Esc Key returns to the main
menu without saving any changes to disk. When you press Esc and
have made changes you will be prompted: "Are you sure (y/n)" to
remind you to save if desired. Answer yes to return without
saving and no to return to the log. If you did not make changes
you do not get the reminder message.
GLOBAL COMMANDS
Resize Window(Shift-F10)- Allows you to change the window size;
change, then press return to establish the size and return to work
in the window. This only applies to the Directory Window, the
Pantry Window, the Auxiliary Editor(F8), the external copy/
view window(F9), and files without headings. The arrow keys
with the Ctrl key allows a faster resize. The Ctrl key and the
Home, End, PgDn, and PgUp keys move the window to each corner.
For example, the Ctrl Home Key moves the window to the upper left
corner; Ctrl End to the lower right; Ctrl PgUp to the upper right;
Ctrl PgDn to the lower right. Other movement keys are:
Arrow keys - move one side in the arrow direction
Ctl-Right/Left Arrow - fast move of side in arrow direction
PgDn - extends window to bottom of screen
PgUp - extends window to top of screen
Shift-Up - up one row
Shift-Down - down one row
Shift-Right - right one column
Shift-Left - left one column
Shift-Home - to left edge of screen
Shift-End - to right edge of screen
Shift-PgUp - to top of screen
Shift-PgDn - to bottom of screen
Zoom Window - The Window is enlarged to full screen size and any
headings are not displayed. Press again to restore the window
and headings to normal size.
Previous line - When the log prompts for a string as in Search
commands pressing previous line causes the most recently entered
string to be shown.
File mask - use in the library and auxiliary editor to only
select files with a certain extension e.g. *.txt or *. (no
extension). The Directory lists only files with those extensions
instead of all files in the current directory. Dos wildcards are
acceptable.
PRINTERMENU -
When you press Alt-P a printer menu pops up. You then toggle
whether you want screen output to go to the printer or to a file.
Move the cursor arrow to Printer or LOG file and then press return
to toggle it off or on. The log file name is "Prolog.log"; view
the contents using the Auxiliary Log editor (F8). Press F8, enter,
then enter the name "Prolog.log". The log comes up and you review
edit, and/or print it. Turn on "Text mode" to make the long
descriptive lines word wrap (see Miscellaneous help - and use
Ctl Q Ctl W) for better viewing. You also may wish to delete
unnecessary lines or add your own comments.
DIFFERENCES
A few differences exist here between the Wordstar commands we use
and actual Wordstar commands.
Autoindent here toggles it off and on.
Carriage returns cannot be entered at the end of a line in
Overwrite mode. (If you press Enter(Return) at the end of a line
when Insert mode is off, the log will not insert a carriage
return character but will move the cursor to the next line)
To enter carriage returns, you must switch to Insert mode.
