Hearing Loss
SYMPTOMS. In conductive hearing loss, transmission of sound through the
middle ear and ear canal is impaired and the person tends to speak softly.
In Sensorineural loss the person may not be able hear high frequencies and
sounds like p, k, t and hard g.
CAUSES of conductive loss may include the eustachian tube being blocked, wax
or water in the ear, infections such as mastoiditis and otitis media or
otosclerosis (the tiny bones become fixed in place and can not vibrate.
Sensorineural loss may be from exposure to loud noises, complications from
some diseases such as measles and mumps or sensitivity to some drugs
(aspirin).
TREATMENT. A hearing aid may be prescribed.
.Surgery to replace the defective bone may be required.
