  9.              A few tips on getting the most out of BIBL...
  10.  
  11.   o  If you have several databases, give the one you use most often
  12.      a name that sorts first in the list of your databases...that
  13.      will cause that database to display first in your selection
  14.      pick-list and can be activated by simply pressing RETURN
  15.      (or hitting escape).
  16.  
  17.   o  Be sure to put a hyphen between terms used in your descriptor
  18.      field.  BIBL considers anything with a space on either side
  19.      of it a 'word' when indexing. BIBL will index up to 8 'words'
  20.      in the descriptor field.
  21.  
  22.   o  If you have a mouse, you can close this screen by clicking
  23.      on the small box in the upper left corner. Clicking on the
  24.      'scroll bars' will move through this file.  The same is
  25.      true for the internal file viewer (V on the Main Menu).

  27.   o  If you want to sort your database by author (and within
  28.      author, by title):
  29.  
  30.      (1) run the BIX output option from the Export menu
  31.  
  32.      (2) use 'make a database' under the Maintenance and
  33.          create a new (empty) database.
  34.  
  35.      (3) via ASCII import under Maintenance (Shareware users,
  36.          you'll have to use B540IN for this step) import the
  37.          BIX file created in step (1) into your new database.
  38.  
  39.      It will be sorted. You can then delete your original
  40.      database if desired.
  41.  
  42.   o  If you have a REGISTERED version of BIBL, you can store your
  43.      databases (the *.DAT and *.IX files) on a drive other than
  44.      the one where you keep BIBL.EXE.  This makes it easy to use
  45.      BIBL on a LAN where you share access to a remote disk drive.
  46.      Just create an ASCII file (named BIBLPATH.CFG) that contains
  47.      the following line:
  48.  
  49.      DATAPATH=X:\XXXXX    where X:\XXXX is the full path name
  50.                           to where your databases are stored.
  51.  
  52.   o  Enter data into your records just as you'd like it to appear
  53.      in subsequent export files (e.g., enter Smith, John A. for the
  54.      author, not John A. Smith).
  55.  
  56.   o  Data is stored in UPPER CASE in the various BIBL index files,
  57.      but you may use any case when entering search requests. Your
  58.      input is converted to upper case before comparison with the
  59.      index is made.
  60.  
  61.   o  If you should experience a problem with a particular database,
  62.      run the BRX program to rebuild the file.
  63.  
  64.   o  You can use the LABELLED OUTPUT option (under EXPORT) to
  65.      backup your database and (assuming you have the registered
  66.      version) the ASCII Import function to read it back into
  67.      your database. Since the labelled output file contains
  68.      only the data in each field (not the extra spaces or
  69.      the empty fields), the file is often 50% smaller than
  70.      your *.DAT file. If you are using the SHAREWARE version,
  71.      the standalone utility program B540IN can be used to
  72.      read the file back into a BIBL database.
  73.  
  74.   o  When you want to transfer records from one database to
  75.      another you can use the 'T' (for Transfer) option when
  76.      the record you want to move displays. This writes a
  77.      copy of the record to the ASCII file, TRANSFER.BIX.
  78.      (the BIX extension stands for BIBL Import/eXport).
  79.      Each time you press 'T' the record displaying is
  80.      ADDED to the TRANSFER.BIX file.  When you have put all
  81.      the things you want to move into TRANSFER.BIX, use
  82.      ASCII Import (on Maintenance Menu of Registered version)
  83.      to read these records into another BIBL database.
  84.  
  85.      Tip: If you want to move a lot of records that have
  86.      something in common, use the [F]ull search option on the
  87.      search menu. Then you can move through the matches by
  88.      pressing F or B and transfer the desired records by
  89.      pressing T when they display.

  95.      BIBL286 -  a version of BIBL compiled expressely for
  96.                 80286/80386 processors.
  97.  
  98.      CD2BIBL -  Convert ERIC, PsychInfo, MEDLINE or ABI-INFORM
  99.                 downloads into BIBL records. Creates a BIX
  100.                 file suitable for import into BIBL.
  101.  
  102.      B540IN -  Read ASCII (*.BIX) files into a BIBL database.
  103.  
  104.   o  Any ASCII file named BIBL.HLP can be displayed in place of
  105.      this file.  Just be sure to create the file using an ASCII
  106.      word processor (e.g., a programming editor).
