Ahnentafels from PAF
version 1.3
Copyright (C) 1989 by Ann Turner
-- STARTUP INSTRUCTIONS
AHNENTAF is an MS-DOS program to make an ahnentafel from a
PAF (version 2.0 or higher) data base. It differs from the
PAF version of the ahnentafel by adding more detail about
each individual. The final result is similar to ahentafels
published in various genealogical magazines.
To run the program, simply type AHNENTAF. You will be asked
for the location of the PAF data files (NAME2.DAT, INDIV2.DAT,
and MARR2.DAT). Type the drive and path, for example B: for
a floppy disk, or C:\PAF\DATA\ for a hard disk with
subdirectories. (Your subdirectories may have different
names.)
-- BACKGROUND
The word "ahnentafel" comes from the German, "ahnen" meaning
ancestors and "tafel" meaning table. As used today, it
refers to a numbering system for the ancestors of a person.
The starting person is given the number 1. His/her father is
2, and his/her mother is 3. Number 2's father is 4 and his
mother is 5. Number 3's father is 6 and her mother is 7.
To generalize: Double any person's number to get his/her
father's number. Double any person's number and add one to
get his/her mother's number. Note that (after the first
generation), all the men have even numbers, and all the
women have odd numbers. Ahnentafel numbers need not be
consecutive - if an ancestor is unkown, his number is
simply omitted from the list.
The information contained in an ahnentafel can be as short
as a name or as long as a paragraph. Because an ahnentafel
is a list, rather than a chart, it can be very compact.
Many pages of 4-generation pedigrees can be printed on just
a few pages in the ahnentafel format.
-- DETAILS ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
You will be asked to enter the RIN (PAF's record identi-
fication number) for the starting person. It is easiest
to find this number in PAF before you begin this program,
as the program will not search for individuals. It will,
however, verify that you have entered the desired RIN.
The information provided in this version includes birth date
and place, death date and place, and marriage date and place
(printed under the husband's name). If birth and death data
are not available, baptism and burial data are substituted if
possible. The RIN is not included in the printout, since the
RIN is unique to your own database and only confuses other
people. PAF's version of the ahnentafel includes the RIN
numbers if you need them for your own purposes.
The layout is designed for ahnentafel numbers up to seven
digits long. This allows for "only" 23 generations, but the
author seriously doubts that many people need a detailed
ahnentafel beyond 23 generations. PAF's ahnentafel chart
will print 32 generations.
The ahnentafel can be seen on the screen (use the Ctrl-NumLock
or Pause key to stop and start the display), printed out
immediately, or saved to disk for later editing and printing.
Hit Ctrl-Break if you want to stop the program.
The program requires a statement "files=20" in the CONFIG.
SYS file on your boot disk. If you can run AHNENTAF without
any problems or if you have "installed" PAF on your computer,
this statement will already be in the file. However, if
AHNENTAF gives an error message with the code #67, try adding
the statement "files=20" to the CONFIG.SYS file and reboot
your computer.
-- VERSION 1.3 DIFFERENCES
Version 1.3 asks for the location of the PAF data files within
the program, not on the command line as in Version 1.1.
Version 1.3 corrects a bug which caused the information about
a person's first marriage to be printed, even if that marriage
was not on the direct ancestral line.
Version 1.3 adds some information to the detail lines. It
prints the title, information about the spouse of person #1
(from the first marriage record only), baptismal data if the
birth fields are blank, and burial data if death fields are
blank.
