Thank you for giving Modem-It! a try. It may revolutionize the way you
place orders. It has several advantages over placing orders by other
methods:
It's faster. You don't have to enter in your billing, shipping, and
credit card information each time. You don't spend time on hold
waiting for an available operator. You don't spend three minutes
repeating all your order information to an impatient order taker.
Modem-It! calls are generally less than 15 seconds long, and you don't
even need to stick around as Modem-It! will send the order
automatically.
You can place orders 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You
don't need to wait for business hours to place an order. Do it when
it's convenient for you, not the merchant.
Your orders get priority processing. Merchants using Modem-It! may
totally automate the processing of Modem-It! orders, thereby giving
your orders top priority.
You stay up to date with any new offers the merchant may have. Each time
you place an order the merchant can elect to send you back a one page
message describing any new offers or items you may be interested in.
Your order information gets to the merchant accurately. Unlike hand
written orders, faxed orders, or even verbal orders, Modem-It! assures
your order data is complete and readable. This also aids in getting
your orders processed as quickly as possible.
It's a breeze to send or bill orders to another party. At the "Ship
to:" or "Bill to:" prompt just select their name from the pop-up
list. That's all it takes.
There are other features of Modem-It! that make it even more useful:
Password protection, batch ordering, customized merchant forms,
recycling of orders and more.
:-) How much? (-:
Modem-It! is free. You are encouraged to give it away to anyone you
wish. In fact, the more people that use it the more merchants will
support it, so give a copy to a friend.
:-) Copyright (-:
Modem-It! and its documentation is copyrighted and is NOT public domain
software. This means you may not change the program or any of the the
supporting files in any way. In addition, the method and format used to
transmit Modem-It! orders is proprietary. You may only use Modem-It! if
you agree not to un-assemble, disassemble, reverse engineer or use any
means to examine or modify the code for Modem-It or assist others in so
doing.
"Modem-It!" is a trademark of Modem-It! Communications and may not be
used without written permission from Modem-It! Communications.
:-) Getting started (-:
All the Modem-It! files must be in the same subdirectory. The
subdirectory should contain nothing but the Modem-It! files. You will
notice a variety of files are created when you use Modem-It!. The ONLY
files you can delete are this file, MI.DOC, and the PROD.DES file. All
the others are critical. You delete old orders using Modem-It!.
:-) Starting Modem-It! (-:
THE FIRST TIME YOU USE MODEM-IT! YOU MUST START IT FROM THE DOS PROMPT.
You need only do this the first time. Thereafter you can start it within
Windows, OS2, Desqview or any other program, as long as your are in the
subdirectory where Modem-It! resides when you start the program.
Modem-It! has comprehensive help screens built into the program. The
first time you use Modem-It! press F1 each time a new screen appears. F1
is the help key and will provide information on what is happening.
However, to keep things manageable, the help screens contain just the
basic information for using Modem-It!. In this file we will look at a
few areas a little more closely and cover those features of Modem-It!
you might not use everyday but are still important.
:-) Etc. (-:
* You can exit Modem-It! at any time (except when connected with the
merchant) by pressing Ctrl-C.
* Clicking the right button on the mouse is always equivalent to
pressing F10.
* "**" appears to the right of option "B Review an order" at the Main
Menu if there are one or more orders which haven't been sent.
* One of the options given if an error occurs during transmission is to
place the order verbally. Orders placed verbally are closed as if
they had been sent via Modem-It!.
:-) Public vs Private (-:
At the screen asking for your password you can just press Enter (without
entering a password) to enter the "public" area. The "public" area is an
area that anyone can access. Anyone can read/change the credit cards,
from, shipping and billing information, and review any orders placed in
the public area. On the other hand, a private area is password protected
so that only those with the correct password can access this information.
You can have up to 20 private accounts.
* DON'T FORGET YOUR PASSWORD! THERE IS NO "BACKDOOR" METHOD BY WHICH WE
CAN RECOVER YOUR DATA. YOU MUST HAVE THE PASSWORD.
:-) Configuration items (-:
* 2400 baud is the highest baud rate listed because most Modem-It!
orders can be completed in less time than it takes for 9600 baud
modems just to connect.
* If you want to restore Modem-It!'s colors to their original values
then change the "Color Display" value to "No", save the changes, then
do it again except this time select "Yes".
:-) The Order Queue (-:
If you've put orders into the "queue" then another option: "H Send
orders in queue" appears at the Main Menu. The "queue" simply allows you
to send a group of orders at one time. You would create each order and
put it in the queue instead of sending it. Then when you are done you
would select option "H" at the Main Menu to send all the orders in the
queue.
* Modem-It! assumes all queued orders are long distance UNLESS the
merchant's form has been used previously to place a local non-queued
order.
* The queue disappears when you exit Modem-It!. However, the next
time you use Modem-It! you can re-queue any unsent orders by
selecting option "B Review an order" and then pressing F2. Orders
that were unable to be sent will be marked with "**".
:-) Editing Orders (-:
* If using the generic form and the phone number of the merchant is local
then use "000" as the area code.
* Use PgUp or PgDn to move between the seperate areas.
* Don't forget to read the help messages which appear on the bottom
line as you go from item to item.
* Make sure you use accurate item numbers in your orders. In cases
where the merchant automates the processing of Modem-It! orders
most use the item number, not the description, to determine what
product you're ordering.
* Orders that have been successfully sent display the merchant's
reference number for your order and the time/date the order was sent,
on the second line of the screen. Use the merchant's reference number
if you need to call the merchant about this order.
:-) Recycling (-:
Recycling can save you time and effort if you place similar orders
with the same merchant on a regular basis. This is especially true
for businesses who often place repeat orders with their suppliers.
It can also be a big time saver for those of you who take advantage
of at-home grocery shopping. Recycling an order simply creates a new
order using the same information as the order you're recycling. You
can then edit this new order to make any changes. The original order
is untouched.
:-) Suggestions and bugs (-:
We extensively tested Modem-It! before we released it and think we've
gotten most of the bugs out. However, if you find something wrong with
the program or have a suggestion on how we can improve it please let us
know. You can contact us on Compuserve: 72371,1557 or write us at:

:-) Merchants (-:
We are releasing the customer version of Modem-It! prior to soliciting
merchants so we can get Modem-It! to as many users as possible. You
should see a flurry of merchants accepting Modem-It! orders starting in
FEB 93.
Because Modem-It! provides substantial cost savings to merchants who use
it, it won't be long before you see a lot of merchants taking Modem-It!
orders. If you have a merchant you would like to see accept Modem-It!
orders, by all means tell them "I'd rather Modem-It!" and point them in
our direction.
:-) Try it for real? (-:
If you'd like to place an actual order using Modem-It! we'd be pleased to
accommodate. The "PROD.DES" file contains descriptions of several items
we hope will entice you to place an order with us using Modem-It!.
Thank you for trying Modem-It! Give a copy to a friend.
