BGThese items determine how Modem-It! runs on your machine. Each item
will have important information about it displayed at the bottom of the
screen. When pop-up menus or lists appear, make your selection by using
the cursor keys to hi-lite the desired option and press Enter. You can
move between items by pressing Tab or Shift-Tab (to go backwards). If
you don't know what a particular item is then leave it alone by "Tab"ing
to the next item. Press F10 when you are done.
|qGModem-It lets you create your own private account. For example, you
may want to create a private account so others won't find out what you
order them for Christmas. To create your account enter the password you
want to use and from the subsequent menu select "Open New Account".
Only those with your password will be able to access your account.
To enter the public area just press Enter without typing in a password.
|RCSelect this option if you want to create a new order from scratch. If
you want to create a new order using the data from a previous order then
select the next option "Review an order".
|RESelect this option if you want to:
- review a previous order
- if you created an order but haven't sent it yet (**)
- if you want to create a new order by using data from a previous
order (Recycle).
|RDThis option lets you edit the information that goes into the "From"
section of your orders. When you first open your account you'll need to
input this information. From then on you'll only need to edit this data
if your name, address, or phone number changes.
|RFModem-It lets you create a list of different places you can have your
orders sent to. In this way you can order an item and have it delivered
somewhere else. For example you may want to create separate entries for
Grandma, Uncle Bob, any of your relatives or friends. Businesses may
want to create separate entries for each location, or department. Select
this option to create, review, or edit entries in your "Ship To" list.
|RFModem-It! lets you create a list of different people/entities where you
can bill your orders. Let's say you handle purchasing for a particular
college. You might create separate "Bill to" and "Ship to" entries for
each department. Then when you place an order from that department you
just select the appropriate entry from your "Bill To" list. Select this
option to create, review, or edit entries in your "Bill To" list.
|RDThis option lets you add to, review or edit the list of credit cards
you can use as payment for your orders. Modem-It! will notify you if any
of your credit cards is about to expire so that you can update this
information.
|RCThis option lets you configure a variety of items that control how
Modem-It! operates, including adjusting screen colors and changing
passwords.
|RCThis option automatically sends the orders you have put in the queue.
Any messages received from the merchant will be placed in the MER.MSG
file.
|dOThis is the list of your credit cards. MM and YY stand for the month and
year that your card "expires" or is "good thru".
The "Bank" field is only used to differentiate between multiple
Mastercard and Visa credit cards.
To enter a non-standard card (like a gas card..) move to the "Card"
field, select "Other" from the credit card list and type the name of the
card directly into the field.
Double check your credit cards numbers. Mistakes here likely will cause
delays in the merchant's processing of your order.
Modem-It! will notify you when your credit card expiration date
approaches so that you can update this information.
|NDThis lists the payment options the merchant offers. This list varies
from merchant to merchant depending on what (if any) credit cards the
merchant accepts and any other payment policies they have. For example
many merchants don't offer the "C.O.D." or "Bill me" options.
|LLThis is a list of all the orders you have created. The are sorted by
date with the latest order listed first. The listing tells you the day
the order was placed and which form was used to place the order. Orders
with ** in the year portion of the date are orders which you created but
haven't sent yet. Select the order you wish to review, delete, or send
by hi-liting it and pressing the Enter key or clicking on it with a
mouse. To return to the Main Menu press F10 or Escape.
If there are more orders than will fit on the screen at one time <<< or
>>> will appear on the top line of the box. You can shift the display
over a column by clicking on the arrows or using the left/right arrow
keys as needed. In addition Home/End moves to the start/end of the list.
|DRType any additional information or comments into this area. Some of the
not so obvious editing commands are explained below:
Insert key: Toggles between "overwrite" and "push" modes. In
"overwrite" mode the character is put at the cursor location
overwriting any character that may already be there. In
"push" mode all characters following the cursor are moved
over one space and the new character is inserted. You can
tell what mode you're in by looking at the cursor size: the
small cursor indicates "overwrite".
Flow: Joins all the lines together from the cursor location to the
end of the paragraph.
To exit use F10, Escape, PgUp or PgDn.
NOTE: Only add Comments when necessary as they may require the merchant
to process your order manually instead of automatically.
|MGThis is the list of people/organizations you can have your order billed
to. If you'd like to add to the list, select "* NEW *".
If there are more "Ship to" entries than will fit in the box <<< or >>>
will appear on the top line of the box. You can shift the display over a
column by clicking on the arrows or using the left/right arrow keys
as needed. In addition Home/End will move to the start/end of the list.
|OGThese are the merchants whose order forms you have. If the merchant you
want is not on this list then select "* NEW *". This will use a generic
order form. All merchants can process orders using the generic form.
When you place an order with a merchant using the generic form Modem-It!
will get from the merchant their customized form, install it on your
computer, and add the merchant's name to this list.
|SDThis screen contains information the merchant feels you should know
before placing an order via Modem-It!. This information may describe
conditions or limitations. Don't continue to send your order unless you
understand and agree to abide by these conditions.
|NDMake sure your printer is on and that it has paper. Then try again.
If that doesn't work then abort and go change the printer port number
using the "Configure" option at the Main Menu.
|GPThis is the order you elected to review. If there are more products
ordered than will fit in the product box there will be an up arrow or
down arrow to the right of the product area. You can scroll thru the
entire list by pressing the up/down arrow keys or clicking on the up/down
arrows.
There isn't room on the screen to present all the order information. If
you'd like to see all the comments, where the order was shipped, or the
method of payment, press F5 and select the desired item from the menu.
If you'd like to use this order as the basis for a new order then select
F6 "Recycle". You'll then be allowed to edit this order and send it
again. The original order will not be affected by any changes you make.
If you'd like to delete this order press F3. To send this order to your
printer press F9. To return to the order list press F10.
|RDThis option lets you set the following items Modem-It needs to run
correctly: Color or mono display, Pulse or tone dialing, dialing prefix,
format for date display, printer port, modem port, computer to modem baud
rate, and CGA screen flicker.
|RAThis lets you change your password to something else.
|RCThis closes your account so that your password will not gain access to
Modem-It! anymore. You have the option of deleting all your files or
making them public.
|RCIf you are having problems connecting with the merchant then the
answer may lie in modifying the modem initialization string. This option
lets you do just that.
|RCThis lets you change the display colors. The colors you choose will only
affect your account. This lets every account chose the colors they like
best.
|OHThis record's name is displayed at the upper right of the box. If it
says "* NEW *" then you'll be asked to name it when you're done editing.
Press F5 if you want to re-name this entry to something else. Press F6
if you want to delete this entry entirely.
Press Enter, Tab or Shift Tab to move between fields. If a field is not
appropriate just leave it blank. Press F10 when you're done.
|OBThis option saves any changes you've made to this entry and then returns
you to the Main Menu.
|OBThis option returns you to the Main Menu without saving any of the
changes, thereby leaving this entry as it was originally.
|OASelect this option if you need to edit the entry some more.

the middle part is the product area, and the bottom area is for your
comments. You move between areas by using the PgUp and PgDn keys.

will be an up or down arrow to the right of the product area. You can
scroll thru the entire list by pressing the up/down arrow keys or

|OHThis is the information that goes into the "From" section of the order.
If this information is wrong then select option C and correct it.
If the information is correct and the merchant has this information then
select option A. However, if this information is different than the
information the merchant has, or you don't know what information the
merchant has, or this is your first order to this merchant, then select
option B.
|OASelect this option to send the order to the merchant now.

|BUWelcome! Modem-It! is determining your modem's configuration.
If you haven't printed out the instructions you should do so by entering
"copy mi.doc prn" at the DOS prompt. While Modem-It! is easy to use and
has extensive on-line help you'll miss quite a few of its features if you
don't read the instructions.
If you ever find yourself at a loss for what to do next, check the
"explanation line" at the bottom of the screen and the "Command line" at
the top of the screen. If you still don't have an answer, press F1 and a
"Help" screen will appear which should contain the information you need.
If you get in over your head you can always press Ctrl-C to exit back to
the DOS prompt. In addition, if you just want to take a break you can
press Ctrl-F for a little variety.
Because this is your first time using Modem-It! some of the help screens
will pop-up automatically. Read them carefully. Remember, once we get
all your data set up, placing orders becomes as easy as selecting the
merchant, filling in the order items and pressing a key. Have fun!
|CTDO NOT CHANGE THIS STRING UNLESS YOU ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY CONNECTING
TO THE MERCHANT. The standard string should be: X4 S6=2 S7=60
Before you change this value, monitor a failed call attempt audibly by
using CONFIG to turn your modem's speaker to ON.
If Modem-It! displays "Unable to connect" before the merchant answers and
attempts to connect, then increase the S7=30 value. This value
determines how many seconds Modem-It! waits to connect before hanging up.
If you hear a dial tone when Modem-It calls the merchant, but get the "No
dial tone detected" message, change "X4" to "X3". If you're not getting
a dial tone make sure your phone line is plugged into the modem
correctly. If you have a multi-line phone you'll need a splitter in
order to connect properly to your modem.
If your modem attempts to connect, or connects yet fails to transmit
your order then check to see if your modem has error correction or
compression. If so, you need to add the codes to disable these features
to this string. Check your modem's manual for the codes to use.
|SBThe COM port and/or Baud rate values are wrong. Please select the
correct value.
|NCUse: "W" to wait for dial tone.
"," to pause for 2 seconds. Use as many as needed.
"#" and "*" may only be used on a touch-tone phone.
|RBIf you are receiving this message in error (you can hear the dial tone)
then use Configure to change the Modem Init string value of X4 to X3.
|jDYou have none of the credit cards this merchant accepts for payment.
However, you can still place the order via mail by filling out the order,
printing it (using F9) and mailing the printed form to the address listed
on the printed order.
