INTRODUCTION
dTimer is an easy-to-use time logging program with export capabilities
for several different formats so you can easily import data into an
accounting program for billing and tracking. This is the single user
version. A multi-user version is available and a network version will
be available soon. Registered users will be notified when it becomes
available.
dTimer can be run from the DOS prompt or as a non-Windows application
using the .PIF file and icon.
Following is a step-by-step description of how to use dTimer.
At the "C" prompt, type "Timer". You will be asked for an operator ID.
Type in the alphanumeric ID you want to use. If your ID is not already on file, dTimer will ask if you want to add an operator. Answering "Y" will
take you to an add screen. Type in the information requested and you will
be asked to verify the data. Answering "Y" will take you back to the
operator ID screen with the new ID input into the field. Press <Enter>.
The operator name will be shown for verification. If it is not correct,
answer "N" and you will be allowed to try another ID.
Once you have verified the operator ID, you will be taken to a main menu.
In the current version of dTimer, you have seven choices. The first two
are the mainstay of the program. They let you start and finish jobs.
Choice 1 will allow you to log on to a task. Then exit dTimer and start
your task. dTimer will track your time, even if you have shut your computer off. dTimer will not forget your start date and time.
You will not be allowed to start a second task without first logging off
the first. The multi-user version of dTimer will allow you to log onto
"n" tasks but you will have to have "n" ID's to do so.
Choice 2 lets you log off a task and stores an elapsed time for that
task. You will not be allowed to execute choice 2 without first using
choice 1.
Choice 3 updates the master time log and MUST be run before creating export
files. If you don't, you won't get anything.
Choice 4 takes you to a menu for creating different export files.
a. Fixed ASCII is a file with all the characters strung
together and nothing separates fields.
The order of the fields exported is as follows:
Operator ID (8), Customer ID (8), Project ID (6),
Function Code (4), Description (50), Start Date (8),
Start Time (8), End Date (8), End Time (8), Elapsed Time (6),
Initial Location of any file you logged onto (30),Final
location of your file when you logged off (30), Export Date (8),
Billing Rate (6), Dollar amount of this export (9).
Parentheses show field length.
This is how the file (EXPASC.TXT) actually looks:
371735 MUFTI PLAN drawmuftiplan accessories 1991100311:54:251991100321:54:30 34.00C:\dbas\laog.dbf C:\dbas\laog.dbf 22.00 748.00"
b. CD ASCII is comma-delimited ASCII. Fields are separated
with commas and character information is enclosed with quotes.
The order of fields is Operator ID, Customer ID, File starting location,
Description, Project ID, Function Code, Start Date, Start Time, End Date,
End Time, Elapsed Time, File Ending Location and Export Date.
This is how the file (EXPASC.CSV) actually looks:
"371735","MUFTI","PLAN","ds","multisldpasdf",19911003,"12:31:09",19911003,"22:31:17",28.01,"C:\sdlfkjsdlkf\sladkfj","C:\sdlfkjsdlkf\sladkfj",,25.00,700.25
c. dBase is a standard dBase file (EXPASC.DBF).
All the above contain information summarized to the level you assign
based on the type of ID you assign to a project. If you only have
customer numbers, the summary level will be based on operator id plus
customer number. If you assign project numbers, the summary level be
be by project within customer.
d. Detail export is all the transactions you have done from
day one. This is not summarized and is in comma delimited format.
This is how the file (DETAIL.ASC) actually looks:
"371735","MUFTI","C:\sdlfkjsdlkf\sladkfj","multisldpasdf","PLAN","ds",19911003,"12:31:09",19911003,"22:31:17",10.00,"C:\sdlfkjsdlkf\sladkfj",19911009

The order of fields is Operator ID, Customer ID, File starting location,
Description, Project ID, Function Code, Start Date, Start Time, End Date,
End Time, Elapsed Time, File Ending Location and Export Date.
Choice 5 takes you to a menu with selections for reporting on hours
during a date range you specify. If you only want one days' hours,
put that date in both date fields.
a. Hours for a date range. This tells you hours totalled by
operator by project. These are normal transactions.
b. Error log. If, during posting, dTimer cannot find a record,
an error record is created with identifying information.
Use this report to find the record with the error. You can then
correct the error with a two step process. First, create a new
entry by starting and stopping the same project. This will create
a record with zero hours in it. Second, edit this record
in the "EDIT a project" screen selection on the main menu. The
new hours will be calculated and will update the appropriate
records.
c. Hours to go shows the remaining budgeted hours on your projects.
Choice 6 takes you to an editing menu. Your choices are:
1. Edit a project. This lets you change the start and stop
date or time and recalculates the elapsed time. Once the
master file has been updated, you are not allowed to change
the data record.
2. If you really goofed up, or if dTimer lost its way,
we suggest you use this choice to recalculate the elapsed
times and update actual hours.
3. This choice allows you to add new customers without having
to log onto a task.
Choice 7 allows you to change screen color. Mark and "X" in the background
color you want then another "X" in the foreground color and
press "Pg-Dn". Press "Pg-Dn" without marking anything to return
to monochrome color.
Choice 8 Occasionally, dTimer has trouble finding records in lookup
funcions. If you have that trouble, reindexing should solve
the problem. If you can't even get to the menu because it's
having trouble locating your operator ID. Type "NEWDX" at the
"C" prompt and the problem should go away.
"X" will exit the menu or the program.
