THE NameProcessor Installation
To get THE NameProcessor up and running in 10 minutes or less,
READ THIS FIRST
This is a special version of THE NameProcessor.
It is a fully functional version, limited to 50 names.
(The commercial version allows you to store 1 million names)
1) You will need at least 425k of hard disk space to run THE NameProcessor.
2) You need 256k of RAM (THE NameProcessor itself uses 109k)
3) You must have the program PKUNZIP 1.01 or newer, and PKUNZIP must be in
your DOS "PATH". The Install.bat file requires it.
If you've renamed PKUNZIP to something else - PKU for example,
the install file will say "Bad command or file name", and will NOT
install correctly.
4) In the NAMPRO39.ZIP file is an install program that will automatically
prepare this program for your use. The way to make it work is to:
To INSTALL:
1) Copy the file NAMPRO39.ZIP to a floppy disk (a 360k floppy is OK)
2) Unzip NAMEPRO39.ZIP by typing -> PKUNZIP NAMPRO39
(Yes, a 360k floppy WILL have enough room for the NAMPRO39.ZIP file
AND the files that are created by this step!)
(This is what your floppy directory will look like after the PKUNZIP comand.)
Directory path - A:\*.*
NAMPRO39 ZIP 161,329 .a.. Oct-14-89 00:18 am ...
NP32D ZIP 145,705 .a.. Oct-13-89 05:13 pm ...
-README NP 17,858 .a.. Oct-13-89 11:44 pm ...
Z COM 5,918 .a.. Oct-21-88 06:57 pm ...
INSTALL BAT 7,351 .a.. Oct-14-89 00:15 am ...
5 Files 338,161 Bytes used by files
21,504 Bytes free on disk
3) Next, put the disk with the files you just UNZIPPED in drive "A".
4) Then type in the following-> A:INSTALL and press the Enter key.
5) Then follow the instructions on your screen.
You will only ever have to do this once. The "Install.bat" program will take
care of everything. It will copy all the files to your hard-disk, to a
subdirectory named \NP . It automatically creates that subdirectory. **
__________________________________________________________________
If your floppy is not drive "A:", Use the DOS "Assign" command during
installation.
Example: C:ASSIGN A B
This temporarily makes your computer use drive "B" instead of "A" when our
Install program needs to get files from the floppy disk. After installation
type: C:ASSIGN to change everything back to normal.
__________________________________________________________________
To RUN: (*AFTER* you've run INSTALL above)
Type in-> NP then press ENTER.
This starts up THE Nameprocessor using the program NP.BAT on your root
directory.
__________________________________________________________________
1) It won't find a name I know I put in there!
When trying to find a name with the entry screen, if it seems that
NameProcessor is not finding names correctly, Remember that: UPPER
and lower case letters make a difference.
Theory: In THE NameProcessor the alphabet is sorted like this: Aa Bb
Cc Dd Ee Ff Gg Hh Ii J j K kLl and so on.
This means if you want to find "Joe Smith", you might type in "j"
then press the PgDn (find) key. But "Joe" doesn't come up, "Karen"
does! What's going on here? Well, if PgDn doesn't find a name
starting with a "j" (lower case) it will find the next name in
sequence. That would be a name starting with a "K". In this case -
Karen. To find Joe from here (J is immediately before K) press the
PgUp key to scroll backwards thru the names. "Joe" should then be
the name that shows up. If you had typed in a capital "J" to start
out with, "Joe" would have come up.
2) If you intend to use a modem for dialing, please note which "COM"
port your modem is connected to. Choices are normally COM1 or COM2.
Also, make a note of the speed (baud rate) of your modem. The most
likely choices are 300, 1200 or 2400. October 14, 1989

CAPABILITIES:
1) All output (labels, rolodex cards, etc.) can be either previewed
onscreen, printed on paper, or put in a file to be edited with your word
processor or desktop publishing program.
2) When you go to run a program, most of the questions onscreen already
have answers showing. If the answer showing is the one you wish, just
press "Enter" or "Return" to accept that answer and go to the next
question. Of course you can override any of the offered answers by typing
in one of the other options offered.
3) You can return to this menu from anywhere in THE NameProcessor, at any
time by pressing the "Escape" key.
4) All programs can be paused or stopped at any time by pressing the
Escape key.
Here is an approximate rule of thumb:
F1 gets Help
ESCape key pauses or stops the current operation
Enter/Return key goes Forward
5) Instructions you need are almost always somewhere on the screen.
*It has been said that the acid test of any great program, is whether it
can be used and learned without a manual. Give NameProcessor a try.
If it isn't obvious to use, we have some more work to do.
Here are some user comments:

THE NameProcessor List of features
NAME & ADDRESS BOOK: Store all the names, addresses and phone numbers you know
in ONE place... Then find them easily and quickly. Plenty of room for notes
too. THE NameProcessor uses common sense. Thats why it's superior to any other
system, including manually keeping names on paper. On an 8 Mhz PC-XT, it takes
less than a second to find ONE person in 18,000 names. Edit information
easily. Find anyone by their first name, last name, company name, or
call-back-date.
TO-DO LIST: No need to learn new commands, because it uses YOUR word
processor. One keystroke to start. Easy to move priority items to top, outline
projects, and add details as task proceeds. No size limit with most word
processors.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Shows appointments, reminders, and your To-Do list on one
sheet of paper. Pick any range of dates. Shows when, who, & why to call. Shows
reminders of yearly or monthly events. If you have several people in an
office, you can see appointments for just one of them.
INSTANT-LETTER: A complete, personalized letter in your hands in seconds.
Select the Instant-Letter feature and in a flash you pop into a letter that
only needs your message to be complete. Just type in your thoughts (using your
word processor), save, print, sign and mail! Address heading is already in the
correct position to show thru on window envelopes.
INSTANT-ENVELOPE: Address an envelope in seconds even on a laser printer.
Optionally print your return address. Can also address a large mailing label
for manila envelopes.
INSTANT-FORM-LETTER(tm): Complete, personalized form-letters pouring out of
your printer in moments. Just select the names you want for this mailing. Then
automatically a form-letter is created so your word processor can use those
names. You need only add the body of your letter and give it the form letter
print command (Merge-print it) to have completed form-letters, ready to mail,
in your hands. Address heading is already in the correct position to show thru
on window envelopes. (*see below for supported word processors)
MAILING LABELS and Continuous Envelope addressing: Labels can print 1 or 3
across (3 across works on 80 column printers). Select any of hundreds of
categories of names to print. Print alphabetically or by Zip. Restart at last
good label if printer jams.
TELEMARKETING lists: Select any or all of thousands of categories of names for
telephone contact list. Your list of categories can be viewed when needed. Use
dialing function to call instantly, without misdialing. Save notes about your
conversation. The date is automatically recorded. Store a note &
call-back-date for your next contact.
PHONE DIALING: Instantly dial either of two numbers per name. Space to store
any length international number. Redial button. You can also type in a phone
number from your keyboard. Will dial using any "COM" port or baud rate. Uses
Hayes command set. Distinguishes between local or long distance phone numbers
to add a "1" prefix if needed. You can have it dial a "9" first, to dial from
a PBX phone system. MCI & Sprint prefixes supported.
ROLODEX CARDS: Prints continuous cards, all 3 standard sizes. Allows you to
print only those cards that have changed since the last time you printed them.
Restart at last good card if printer jams.
TYPEWRITER: Type directly on your printer for memos, short notes, envelopes,
checks or completing forms. Advance the paper in your printer right from your
keyboard without fumbling with printer buttons or knobs.
CATEGORIZATION: Allows you to keep ALL your names in ONE place, yet easily
group them the ways you want to remember them. For example: give all clients a
"C" for a category, and when you ask for "C's" when you print letters or
labels. Then, only labels for your clients will be printed. Each name can be
in up to 14, out of a catalog of hundreds of categories. Category codes can be
viewed or changed easily when wanted.
LOAD NAMES: Allows you to use whatever list of names you already have on your
computer, without typing them in again. Loads "mail merge" style (comma
delimited) files and WordPerfect data files of names easily. Names are ready
to use (you can print labels, etc.) the moment loading is finished. All your
lists can be loaded into THE NameProcessor and yet kept separate with category
codes that you specify.
LIST of NAMES: Sort by last name, company name or sequential record number.
Print phone numbers, or addresses, or both. List of duplicate & near duplicate
names. Return labels: Print up to 99,999 of any one label. Can be used to make
floppy disk labels. List of names with unmailable addresses.
POWER FAIL PROTECTION: If someone trips on power cord and pulls it out of the
wall, worst case is one name lost. Names are saved instantly to disk, no
buffering in RAM memory.
NO TRAINING NEEDED: Program & Manual written in plain english. Online help is
context sensitive. Manual has complete index, trouble shooting guide, and
error list with suggested remedies. Easy 1 disk, 2 minute installation. To
backup your "file of names" takes 2 key strokes. To restore your "file of
names" takes 3 key strokes.
Extra special features: NAMES ALWAYS AUTOMATICALLY SORTED by last name,
company name, first name, zip, call-back date. This allows lists and labels to
be printed without any waiting. 10 digits for Zip. Fields for date entered,
last date edited, last date called, last date mailed. History-key, duplicate &
near-duplicate name list, unmailable address list.
ALL labels or lists can be sent to either your printer, screen or "a disk file
that can be edited with your wordprocessor".
Pause or Stop ANY operation in midstream w/ Esc key.
Run a program like 1-2-3, without leaving NameProcessor.
Requires: DOS 2.1 or greater, 162K RAM, 550K of hard disk space.
