FEATURES
Welcome to the DataTier Calendar & Filing Program!
There are many calendar programs on the market so why choose
DataTier?
Unlike most calendars which store only appointment entries,
DataTier allows you to record additional information on each
appointment or meeting. Better yet you can recall and
display all previous entries with the same person, client,
or event. As an example you may have meetings at various
times each year with a client "John Smith" and you record
what occurred. You can then call up "John Smith" at any
time and see a list of all the previous appointments with
him as well as view or print what happened at each or all
visits.
The intent of DataTier Calendar is to allow the tracking of daily
events in an easy to use program either at home or in the office.
Here are some of the key features you will discover:
- More then one user calendar can be created and accessed.
- Messages can be sent between calendars.
- In addition to storing information by time of day a Note
or Special Event can be attached to a given day.
- This program can be installed on a Novell Network to allow
shared access of calendars.
- Various Format options can be chosen depending on your
calendar needs for time increments, numbered events, and
types of additional information linked to an appointment.
- Printed reports are available for both Dot Matrix and
Laser Printers.
- Ability to Cut, Copy, and Paste appointments with all
attached information to any time and date.
- All screens use window like displays for ease of viewing.
- Simple Menu and Guides are always in view.
- User Definable Table of common used appointment names.
- User Definable Help screens.
- Use of either Mouse or Keyboard.
- With the Optional Full DataTier program you can customize
a variety of Formats and Reports.

At any point in the program the display always shows a "MENU"
selection of options you can choose. Under the "MENU" is a
display called "Guide" which always shows the special keys
available for each current display on the screen. As stated
earlier one of the main goals is to provide a user friendly
environment ... especially for those of you who might just be
getting started with computers or to those of you like me who
never like to read the manual!
Lets go thru some fundamentals:
- Move to a Different Day- Use the arrow keys to position
cursor on another day or use the mouse to position over
the day desired and click the left button.
- Move to a Another Month- Use the Page Up or Down keys, or
move cursor with the mouse over PgUp or PgDn area and
press left button.

page of help. Press Escape key to Exit Help.
Lets make a calendar entry:
- Position on the desired day and press Enter key or click
Left button of mouse once if day is already highlighted or

| +------------MESSAGE-------------+ | |
| | | |
| | | |
| +--------------------------------+ |
| |
| |
| |

- As you can see there are four types of entries that
could be made on a given day. Other format options are
available.

time you wish to make an entry.

learn how to set up a different time breakdown in the next
section).
OR
Press F5 key and a table of commonly used appointment names
appear. Either select one or again press F5 to allow you to
add a new entry to the table.
What is unique to this program is the ability to now record
information about this appointment.
- Press the F2 key and the following Window appears:

6. W H A T I S D A T A T I E R ?
Welcome to a brief description of DataTier, the information
manager that allows a unique approach to organizing the data you
use at work or at home.
- Unlike other information management tools, DataTier can
Group information into filing Folders that can be
organized as an indented hierarchy of relationships.
- Each filing Folder can have multiple Forms of information
that vary from Folder to Folder.
- Each Form can be built up from one or many blank pages to
reflect text and data input fields unique to your
information needs.
Features that make DataTier unique among information management
software are:
- A Hierarchy of Information
Information is structured by establishing indented
relationships. Information such as Bills of Materials,
organizational structures, tasks in a project, your homes
inventory, a family tree, etc. all involve the grouping of
information in a hierarchy. Each grouping of information is
stored as a filing Folder.
- Filing Folders of Forms
Each filing Folder can contain a different set of Forms.
Forms are created and can be modified in a simple freehand
approach. Once created these Forms can be added and deleted
as required from any Folder in the DataTier application at
any time. Each Folder within an application can be
different and selected from a library of Folders you create.
- A Custom Calendar
A calendar can be built to reflect any events that occur on
a daily bases. Each event can further be backed up by a
series of Forms. The data of the calendar is saved as a
DataTier information group and thus a given reoccurring
calendar event can be tracked and recalled for reporting or
queries. If you are involved in a work group multiple
calendars can be kept on one computer or on a network. You
can even leave messages on others calendars or highlight
special events on a given day.
- Custom Reports
The ability to build custom printed reports by creating an
output Form from a blank page by typing titles and selecting
<21>
DataTier : Calendar User's Guide, Version BETA .01
input fields from previously defined input Forms and
pointing to the position on the report you would like the
field to appear. These reports can display information
within a Folder on an output page in either line by line
fashion for each Folder or information on a separate page
for a Folder. Selection of Folders for printing can be by
groups of Folders or picking individual Folders. There is
no limit on how you can develop numerous reports to display
information the way you want to see it.
- Summing by Tier
Input fields on selected Forms can be designated as
summarization fields. Once defined selecting SUMMARIZE
within a DataTier application will cause summing upward
through the hierarchy with totals at each level and sub
level.
- Searching for Information
A DataTier application can be searched to find information
within a Folder and then display only Folders meeting the
search criteria. The application can also be alphabetically
sorted for all Folders or for Folders that may begin or
contain part of a Folder name.
- User friendly Features
- All actions can be controlled by a mouse or use of
the keys. On all screens in the program a list of
acceptable actions is shown. All data input fields can
be set up to have a table of values that can be accessed.
Additional table values can be added right at the point of
look up. The help screen allows users to place their own
help messages that become a permanent part of the program.
- All fields on input Forms can be rearranged at any time.
Fields can be added or deleted at any time without having
to rebuild the existing data captured.
This program was designed for anyone to use. Once you create
your first application, the ease of use will amaze you. The
combination of Forms, Folders, and hierarchy relationships is
only limited by your imagination.

DataTier : Calendar User's Guide, Version BETA .01
To gain a better understanding of where DataTier could be used
lets look at some typical DataTier applications.
Example 1 : An Organization Structure
In this application employee Folders of information are
kept in a hierarchy that represents reporting relationship. Up to
five levels of indentation can be utilized. Adding new Folders
can be done either by selecting from a library of Model Folders
created by you or copying a previously added Folder. Once
selected Forms are contained in an employee's Folder. Up to ten
Forms of information can be added from a library of Forms created
by you. Even after the Model Folder is created each Folder in a
specific application can have Forms added or deleted as required.
Forms appear that contains fields defined specifically for this
application predefined by you. Up to twenty pages of data can be
defined for each Form type.
-------------------------
Most information managers or databases assume a single Form with
all data objects treated in a linear or uniform manner. Yet in
life most information is related in a hierarchy or tier such as
the organizational structure example or a product that consists
of components and parts that make up the overall assembly.
Now let's look at some other DataTier applications:
Example 2 - Project Plans
Many times departments have a series of ongoing projects. In
many cases these projects contain tasks. DataTier can be used to
create this hierarchy. For each project various Forms can be
created such as schedules, assignments, objectives, financial
objectives or current costs, status reports, etc.. Tasks also
may have similar Forms or additional Forms appropriate for the
type of task.
Example 3 - Home Inventory
Within your house you have rooms and within each room furnishings
or objects you want to keep information about for insurance
purposes. Thus for each object a Folder of Forms can be created
that show descriptions, maker, serial numbers, cost, and the
location of purchase. At the room level this object may contain
some general information and a Form for cost, which when the
SUMMARIZE option is selected, will now contain the total cost of
objects that make up the room. Likewise at the highest house
level total cost will have been captured. Perhaps at this level
are Forms about the insurance carriers, builders, or bank
mortgage.
<23>
DataTier : Calendar User's Guide, Version BETA .01
Example 4- Appointments or Sales Calls
If you're a salesperson you might list each company and within
each company the sales calls you have made. Each call may
contain Forms about the sales call and at the company level Forms
would exist on address or contacts. Likewise if people use your
services a list of individuals and indented off each the date of
visit which would then contain Forms such as reason for visit,
services provided and billing data. Again you could summarize to
find out billings by person or in total.
---------------------------------
Because Folders can be stored in a library with or without pre
filled information other types of applications can be represented
with DataTier such as:
Example 5- Configuring a Sail boat
As a boat salesperson I could create a library of basic boats and
all options. Each Folder would contain Forms that indicate the
vendor and address, descriptions, features, and current costs.
To put together a proposal to a perspective buyer I could
configure a boat by selecting items from the library. In some
cases items could be grouped by placing them in a hierarchy such
as all electronics or sails. By invoking SUMMARIZE a total cost
to the customer can be generated. By building some simple
reporting a configuration and price list can be generated.
Example 6- Items sold to a Customer
Again a library of all items available for sale can be created.
Information such as descriptions, costs, suppliers would be built
into the Forms for each item of inventory. All clients would be
listed in the DataTier along with Form data on such things as
addresses for billing and shipping. Indented on each customer
would be the items sold pulled in from the library of inventory
items. In some cases categories of items could be indented after
each customer and individual items off each category.
<24>
DataTier : Calendar User's Guide, Version BETA .01
Example 7 - Race Car
I have a friend who after telling of this program asked to
have a copy so he could track the parts added to his race car.
Indented off the car he had categories such as Engine, Body, and
Tires. Indented from these are each part he has added to his
race car along with Form information on location of purchase,
cost, and a description of notes he kept on special installation
requirements. Interestingly he was quite shocked when he
summarized the total costs invested in his race car to date.
---------------------
As you can see from the above examples and features, there is a
limitless set of information managing problems that can be
tackled with DataTier, both personal and business. This program
does not require special computer skills and once you develop
your application and some reports, use of the system will be
remarkably easy for others to use.
