  6. Introduction
  7. ------------

  9. Refs is a program for creating browsing and maintaining academic
  10. reference databases.  The program uses the common ASCII Unix refer file
  11. format and so is compatible with Unix refer, and also bibliography programs
  12. such as WinRefer.
  13.  
  14. Refs can also import data files in other formats, in an easily expandable
  15. way.  Modules are supplied to read ISI and Medline files.
  16.  
  17. It is shareware, and the distribution should contain the following files:

  19.         REFS.EXE        The program itself
  20.         REFS.HLP        The help file
  21.     REFS.INI    INI file
  22.     TEST.REF    Example Unix refer data file
  23.     IMPBIDS.DLL    BIDS (ISI) Import DLL
  24.     IMPMED.DLL    Medline Import DLL
  25.         BWCC.DLL        Borland's custom control library
  26.         README.TXT      This file

  28. The program will work with Windows 3.1 or higher.

  38. You will need PKUNZIP 2.04 or later to extract this file.
  39.  
  40. 1. Copy the files REFS.HLP, REFS.EXE and TEST.REF into any directory.
  41.    TEST.REF is merely an example data file and may be deleted.
  42.  
  43. 2. Copy IMPBIDS.DLL and IMPMED.DLL to the same directory, or another directory
  44.    on the path.  If you do not require these DLLs, delete them and remove their
  45.    entries in REFS.INI.
  46.  
  47. 3. Copy BWCC.DLL into your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  If you have a more recent
  48.    version already from another program, use that, and ignore this step.  Use
  49.    File, Properties... in File Manager to find the date the file was created.
  50.  
  51. 4. Copy REFS.INI into either your WINDOWS directory or the same directory as REFS.EXE
  52.    This is important.  Certain parts of Refs will not work correctly if REFS.INI cannot be
  53.    found, or is incomplete.
