  1.                   THE FREE AMERICAN - WHAT'S IN A NAME?

  5.         Since launching the bulletin board and now the magazine by this
  6. name, I've been asked a number of times about the name. So, here's the
  7. story:

  9.         Once upon a time long ago in a city called Baltimore, there was a
  10. newspaper located at South and Lombard Streets. It was called The News
  11. American, and it was the freest place that ever was.
  12.  
  13.         The reporters were free to chase all the news they could find and
  14. bring it back to the editors. (A cub reporter was once ordered back into a
  15. burning building to get a better description of the area where the fire was
  16. burning.)
  17.  
  18.         The editors were free to slap the best headline they could find on
  19. the resulting story. (The unofficial ideal was "Blonde Found Hacked in
  20. Bathtub.")
  21.  
  22.         The readers were free to relish the resulting mixture of comedy,
  23. tragedy, and everyday journalism which is history with photographs and the
  24. ink still wet.

  26.         But times change, and The News American was just one of the once-
  27. mighty afternoon dailies that exist now only in the fond memories of those
  28. who loved them.

  30.         When I started this bulletin board I wanted it to stand for words
  31. and thoughts and freedom, as The News American once did. I wanted the very
  32. best name I could think of. But that one already belonged to the memories
  33. of Baltimore. So I tried to make a name that would be as proud and ringing,
  34. but yet would belong to the present and future, rather than to the past,
  35. however beloved.

  37.         Thus...The Free American, a salute to News American vets and
  38. newspaper people everywhere who care about freedom; the readers and leaders,
  39. the writers and fighters, from the newsroom and the pressroom and the
  40. darkroom -- and now from the computer room -- to your computer room and
  41. living room.
