T H E S O C C E R G A M E I I
The object of this outstanding game is to become a successful manager of a
football team. At the outset you are contracted for a number of years to a
fourth division team. From this lowly base you try to build up a reputation
which ensures other teams have an avid interest in desiring your managerial
qualities to be present at their club. Consequently, when your contract expires
you may, if you're extremely talented, get offered a contract from a first
division team. If, however, you are incompetent as a manager (whether by
spending too much of the club's money, selling too many of their shares,
losing too many matches, etc), your contract will not be renewed and no other
reasonably-minded team will offer you another contract. The game will be over.
Whilst under contract it is still possible for you to be sacked - for gross
misdemeanours - but not possible for you to leave your current club for
another.
Success is measured in a number of ways. Largely it is a personal matter. Some
people may play the game to win a European cup, others only for the FA cup;
some will play the game to amass large sums of money, others to be top of the
super league. Others still will be playing to remain as an active manager
for as many seasons as possible.
The menus use conventional selection methods : the arrow keys on the keypad
move the bar in the corresponding direction; Home moves to the first option;
End moves to the last; Pg Up moves to the top of the column; Pg Dn moves to
bottom of the column. All menus can be MOVED to display any information hidden
beneath them. Ctrl pressed with Left Arrow, Right Arrow, Pg Up and Pg Dn will
enable movement of any menu to any part of the screen.ESC will exit any menu.
The "Soccer Game II" uses an enormous database. Consequently it is not a good
idea to try running this game concurrent with any memory resident program or
on top of another program from a DOS shell. Where possible the error message:
"Not enough memory" should inform you that there is a problem.
The MAIN MENU Options
The F2 Function key :
This toggles the active strip menu. If staff is showing then pressing F2
will change the current options to team (and vice versa).
The TEAM options:
1) The PLAY option :
From here you can play your next match or quit (or quit and save) the game.
The "quit option" checks, firstly, that you have selected the correct option!
and, if verified, asks if you wish to save the game or not. On saving the game
disk space is checked and a warning issued if it is insufficient (around 100K
is required).
2) The HELP option:
Offers you three choices. General help Print-out and Sound off/on.
Selection of "General" will bring up what you are presently reading."Print-out"
will send a copy of this file to your printer. Sound off turns off the speaker,
Sound on turns it on again.
3) The LEAGUE option:
This lists all five league tables (you can move through them with the right and
left arrow keys, f1-f5 or the spacebar - no need to press ENTER). Press P to
get a print out of the current league table.
4) The TEAM option:
Offers manifold options :
to alter a player's name
rearrange the team
sell player
change the current display
toggle display
print out
The "alter name" option lets you change the name of any of your players.
"Rearrange" team option enables you to switch players from one location to
another. This is necessary for moving players from the RESERVES section into
the first eleven. It is assumed that the 11 players above the "reserves" line
are your choice to kick off the next match.
"Sell player" enables you to put a player on the transfer market. You will
be informed later in the game as soon as any club puts in an offer for him.
"Change display" option advances the current display.
All displays show the name and field position of the players. The colour of
each line is determined by the field position of the player:
magenta = goalkeeper/ brown = defender/ blue = midfielder/ yellow = attacker
If the player is injured or has an international commitment the information
will be shown in red.
The bars represent the players abilities in certain areas. The longer the
bar, the better the player. For example, no bar under the Stamina category
means you have a very tired player.
If you have "words" selected the hierarchy, from worst to best, is:
Useless,Bad,Low,Poor,Fair,Average,Good,Superb,Supremo,Ace,GOD
In the display showing matches played and goals scored the figure under the
heading Matches shows the number of matches played by that player this season;
the Total category shows the number of matches he has played since joining the
club. The same applies to the Goals/Total categories.
"Toggle display" changes the displays from bars to words and vice versa.
"Print out" sends current display information to the printer
The STAFF options:
All provide the facility to acquire a new staff member. The better your team,
the more likley you will be to attract interest from other assistants, physios,
scouts and treasurers. Either you will be informed that there is nothing
available (don't give up completely, there are changes every week) or you will
be offered a new member of staff in some form of deal involving your current
employee. Press Y if you agree.
1) The ASSISTANT option:
