  2. WIN95NAV.TXT file for Norton Virus Scan

  4. Microsoft has recently reported that Windows 95 Install Disk #2 can
  5. be corrupted during the installation process if the user's machine
  6. is already infected with a virus. Isolated customer reports to 
  7. Microsoft do not report any damage either to data or the PC, however, 
  8. the Windows 95 installation process cannot proceed.
  9.  
  10. The following steps describe how to use Norton Virus Scan to 
  11. detect and eliminate boot viruses from your system before installing 
  12. Windows 95. These steps should be done at the DOS command line.

  14. 1. Create a directory to store Norton Virus Scan and download
  15.    NAVSCANZ.EXE into the new directory. This file is accessible via
  16.    the Symantec forums of Compuserve, America Online, and Microsoft 
  17.    Network. The file is also available from the Symantec BBS at 
  18.    (503)484-6699 for up to 2400 baud and at (503)484-6669 for up to 
  19.    14,400 baud. Or, connect via FTP at ftp.symantec.com.

  21. 2. Run NAVSCANZ.EXE. This will extract the files needed to run
  22.    Norton Virus Scan including the main program file NAVSCAN.EXE.

  24. 3. Run NAVSCAN.EXE to check your system for viruses.

  26.    If NAVSCAN does not find any viruses...
  27.  
  28.       you can safely install Windows 95.
  29.  
  30.    If NAVSCAN finds a virus on your boot sector or MBR...
  31.  
  32.       you can repair it and scan again. If NAVSCAN does not
  33.       find any viruses, you can safely install Windows 95.
  34.  
  35.    If NAVSCAN finds a virus in memory...
  36.  
  37.       you must copy the NAVSCAN files to a floppy disk (this is best
  38.       done from an uninfected machine). Then, restart your computer
  39.       using an uninfected, write-protected, bootable floppy disk and 
  40.       run NAVSCAN again.

  42.       If your hard drive isn't visible after you restart, run
  43.       "NAVSCAN C:" to repair the infected drive.

  45.    If NAVSCAN finds only a file virus....
  46.  
  47.       you may be able to install Windows 95 if none of the 
  48.       infected files are needed during the installation. You 
  49.       will need a complete version of Norton AntiVirus to repair 
  50.       infected files.

  53. For complete automated Windows 95 protection, you can purchase and 
  54. install Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95. It provides constant 
  55. monitoring of your system to prevent viruses from infecting your 
  56. computer. If you get a virus, NAV/Win95 will, in most cases, repair 
  57. it before it can damage your system.
