  6. This file contains information about Norton Virus Scan, a scan-only 
  7. version of Norton AntiVirus. Full versions of Norton AntiVirus are 
  8. available for DOS/Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Novell NetWare.

  10. Please read the WIN95NAV.TXT file if you have downloaded Norton 
  11. Virus Scan to check for viruses before you install Windows 95.

  52. To launch Norton Virus Scan, type NAVSCAN at the DOS prompt.
  53.  
  54. This freeware version of Norton AntiVirus does not offer all of 
  55. the features available in the complete version of Norton 
  56. AntiVirus.  It is designed to scan executable files for viruses
  57. (viruses cannot infect data files), remove boot infector viruses
  58. (viruses that infect boot MBR or boot records) and give you an
  59. overview of the full Norton AntiVirus program.  This version will 
  60. NOT repair infected files and does NOT provide an automatic
  61. monitoring program.

  63. The complete version of Norton AntiVirus is a comprehensive 
  64. solution for preventing viruses from infecting your computer.  
  65. It detects and removes over 5,300 known viruses and virus 
  66. strains. In addition, it protects against unknown viruses by 
  67. monitoring your system for irregular file activity. Should 
  68. Norton AntiVirus detect an infection, it can repair most 
  69. infected files quickly and easily before the virus damages your 
  70. system. Norton AntiVirus is available for DOS/Windows 3.1 and
  71. Windows 95.

  73. In addition, Norton AntiVirus features the following:
  74.  
  75. Auto-Protect - A memory-resident device driver or TSR (VxD on
  76. Windows 95) that protects your system against infection while 
  77. you are working in other applications.  It detects both known 
  78. and unknown viruses.  With its patent-pending Virus Sensor 
  79. Technology, it will catch unknown viruses BEFORE they infect 
  80. your system.  It can repair, delete, or even halt your computer 
  81. when a virus is found.  With its unique ability to scan files 
  82. when they are created, you are assured that a virus won't end 
  83. up on your computer after uncompressing an archived ZIP file, 
  84. for example.  It can protect your system areas from alteration 
  85. and will also check floppy disks when first accessed and when 
  86. you reboot your computer.  The DOS Auto-Protect TSR can be 
  87. loaded in EMS, HMA, UMBs, High Memory, or conventional memory.  
  88. In fact, it can load different parts of itself in different 
  89. types of memory.  It is a dynamic-memory protection system.  
  90. That means that the memory usage will grow and shrink depending 
  91. upon which features you enable or disable.  Auto-Protect 
  92. requires as little as 5K RAM. The Windows 95 Auto-Protect VxD 
  93. takes no DOS memory.

  95. Scanner - The full screen application that scans your 
  96. computer's memory and drives for the presence of known and 
  97. unknown viruses.  It is here that you can also configure all 
  98. aspects of Norton AntiVirus, view the Virus List, or view the 
  99. Activity Log or Infection Log (these features are described 
  100. later in this file).  The Scanner can check ZIP 1.x or 2.x 
  101. compressed files for viruses, without the need to first 
  102. uncompress them.  It is the fastest virus scanner on the market 
  103. today.

  105. Flexible scanning features - Norton AntiVirus can be configured 
  106. to quickly check your entire computer system for virus 
  107. infection.  Scanning can be set to occur every time you start
  108. your computer, or only on demand.  Also included is a Windows 
  109. Scheduler, so you can specify the exact time to perform a scan. 
  110. You can execute a scan of your entire system in the background, 
  111. while working within your word processor or other application.

  113. Virus updates - Norton AntiVirus lets you upgrade your virus
  114. protection without having to wait for software updates. 
  115. Symantec's 24-hour Virus Newsline offers access to the latest- 
  116. breaking news about new viruses and instructions on how to 
  117. protect your system from them.  Virus updates can be downloaded
  118. from the Symantec BBS or CompuServe, or obtained on disk from 
  119. the Norton AntiVirus subscription update service.

  121. Configurable options - Gives you complete control over the way 
  122. Norton AntiVirus operates. Norton AntiVirus is the most
  123. configurable anti-virus product on the market. For example, 
  124. when a virus is found, you can specify exactly what to do with 
  125. it (delete it, repair it, prompt the user, halt the computer, 
  126. or just notify the user). Another example is the ability to
  127. specify how to alert the user or others when a virus is found 
  128. (generate audible alerts, display a custom message, alert 
  129. network users, alert the network console, or alert Norton
  130. AntiVirus for NetWare NLM).

  132. Unique Exclusions List - You can exclude a drive, directory, or 
  133. list of files from being checked for different operations. For 
  134. example, suppose you want your FORMAT program to be able to 
  135. write to the boot record of a floppy disk. You can easily 
  136. exclude it from being checked. There are 8 different 
  137. operations from which you can exclude particular files or 
  138. directories of your choice. Norton AntiVirus is the only 
  139. anti-virus product that provides this type of flexibility.

  141. Inoculation - For industrial-strength protection, you can 
  142. inoculate your system against future unknown viruses. Norton 
  143. AntiVirus can inoculate not only your files, but also your 
  144. system areas, such as the boot records and master boot records.

  146. Password Protection - Almost every feature of Norton AntiVirus 
  147. can be password protected. For example, you may not want 
  148. anyone removing virus definitions from the Virus List. You can
  149. protect only that feature of Norton AntiVirus, or you can 
  150. password-protect all options. In this way you can ensure that
  151. only you are able to make configuration changes.

  153. Virus List - Norton AntiVirus has full details on over 5,300
  154. viruses and virus strains. You can look up the symptoms of a 
  155. particular virus or what effect it will have once it is 
  156. triggered.

  158. Network Features - Norton AntiVirus has many features for the 
  159. corporate environment. It has the most configuration options 
  160. of all anti-virus products. This means you can configure it to
  161. work the way your organization works. In addition, if a virus 
  162. is found it can notify other users, notify Norton AntiVirus for
  163. NetWare NLM, or notify network consoles. Norton AntiVirus can
  164. be configured to password-protect specific features, so only
  165. selected users can access certain features. With the multipack
  166. version, you get NavUpdate, which provides centralized
  167. configuration, installation, and updating of Norton AntiVirus
  168. and virus definitions. You will no longer have to go from
  169. workstation to workstation installing or updating Norton
  170. AntiVirus. Also, Norton AntiVirus works on all major network
  171. environments, including Novell NetWare, 3Com OPEN, OS/2 LAN
  172. Manager, AT&T Starlan and more.
