STAR2 - Copyright (c) 1993 by R. E. Frazier - all rights reserved
This is a public domain screen saver that demonstrates true 3D
starfield resolution. You will note that the stars range in
size and brightness from a 1-pixel 'dark grey' star to a 9-pixel
'bright white' star, in respect to the square root of the distance
(thus behaving like 'natural' light emitting objects). Stars
become visible at their 'dark grey' brightness, which gives the
illusion that the screen is not very full. However, you can have
as many as 1000 stars (486-DX recommended!) on the screen at the
same time, which provides a very realistic simulation of traveling
at super-light speeds through space. If you have a math co-processor
or a 486 DX (or Pentium for that matter) you will get better results.
I have tested this screen saver with the default settings (75 stars,
update every 75 msec, Warp Factor 5) on a 16 Mhz 386SX with a math
coprocessor and have obtained a smooth scrolling display.
With the default settings it may take up to 15 seconds before a
satisfactory display is obtained, as all new stars are 'born' at
the maximum distance from the observation point. Since this is a
'vector' distance, not all stars will pass the edge of the screen
in the same plane, and the random effect begins producing a decent
quality simulation within a few 'generations'.
WARNING: If you place your eyes close to the display screen, the
resulting effect may convince you that you are actually travelling
through space. Therefore, in case of 'space sickness' you may wish
to consult a pharmacist or physician with regards to the use of
'Dramamine' or other motion sickness medications. Just kidding.
