  1.     Designed specifically for the M1 Carbine, a 
  2. weapon intended as an effective field replacement 
  3. for the .45 M1911A1 Semi-Auto pistol, the .30 M1 
  4. Carbine cartridge was effectively used by U.S. 
  5. troops in W.W. II.  However, compared with the 
  6. pistol, the carbine was viewed as large and 
  7. bulky, and as a longarm, it was considered far 
  8. less desirable to carry into combat than the more 
  9. powerful M1 Garand (.30-06).

  11.     The firearm and cartridge became popular 
  12. after the war years, creating a market for many 
  13. civilian models.  It's use as a hunting round is 
  14. limited however, as deer-sized game are better 
  15. left for more powerful cartridges.  On the other 
  16. hand, it's retort is not large and the recoil 
  17. tolerable by almost anyone.  It is a very 
  18. pleasant cartridge for beginners to practice 
  19. with.
