  1.     The .30-06 Springfield (or "thutty-ought 
  2. six") is a standard bearer with both military and 
  3. civilian histories.  From it's roots as the 
  4. 30-03, it emerged in 1906 as a now-familiar round 
  5. that saw the U.S.  through 3 wars.  Millions of 
  6. Americans have depended on the .30-06 for their 
  7. lives.

  9.     Successfully used in rifles as varied as the 
  10. Springfield, M-1 Garand, Browning Automatic 
  11. Rifle, Johnson amd others, the .30-06 was 
  12. effective in the widest variety of battlefield 
  13. conditions.  It is still often regarded as the 
  14. best "all-purpose" hunting cartridge (with of 
  15. course "all-purpose" being left up to the reader 
  16. to judge).

  18.     The military would find one criticism of the 
  19. round in time (it's size), but from 1906 to 1954 
  20. (when the smaller 7.62mm NATO cartridge was 
  21. adopted), the 30-06 proved itself over and over.  
  22. It's excellent ballistics combined with the 
  23. high-quality of the 1903 Springfield surplus 
  24. actions and cousins have provided sportsmen 
  25. endless hours of converting that "ol' WWI Bolt" 
  26. into the perfect sporter.  Even if the 
  27. home-gunsmith job was less than steller, the '06 
  28. always made it worth it in the end.
