  5. Neuromedin U (NmU) [1] is a vertebrate peptide which stimulates uterine smooth
  6. muscle contraction  and  cause  selective  vasoconstriction.  Like  most other
  7. active  peptides,  it is  proteolytically  processed  from  a larger precursor
  8. protein. The  final  peptides  are from 8 (NmU-8) to 25 (NmU-25) residues long
  9. and are C-terminally amidated.

  11. The sequence  of  the  C-terminal extremity of NmU is extremely well conserved
  12. [2] in  mammals, birds and amphibians. We have used the last seven residues as
  13. a signature pattern.
