  5. The following  bacterial  proteins  involved  in  the uptake of phosphorylated
  6. metabolites, are evolutionary related [1,2]:
  7.  
  8.  - Escherichia coli glycerol-3-phosphate transporter (gene glpT).
  9.  - Salmonella typhimurium phosphoglycerate transporter (gene pgtP).
  10.  - Escherichia coli and  Salmonella typhimurium hexose-6-phosphate transporter
  11.    (gene uhpT).
  12.  - Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium protein uhpC. UhpC is necessary
  13.    for the expression of uhpT and seems to  act  jointly with the uhpB sensor/
  14.    kinase protein.
  15.  
  16. These proteins of about 50 Kd apparently contain  12 transmembrane regions. As
  17. a signature pattern we selected a conserved region in their central section.
  18.
