1/2 teaspoon yellow food coloring or any desired color (optional)
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup salt
STEP 1
In a 1-cup measuring cup combine the water and, if you like, the food coloring. Stir together the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl.
Next, add the water mixture and stir till flour is moistened.
STEP 2
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Then knead the dough 10 minutes or till smooth. Place dough in a clear plastic bag, and store it in the refrigerator until you're ready to use it.
Before using the dough, check its consistency. If the dough is too sticky, knead in a small amount of flour. And if dough is too stiff, knead in several drops of water.
STEP 3
Tape some waxed paper on the counter. Mold a large piece of salt dough into a moon shape. Make the shape about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.
STEP 4
Roll tiny pieces of salt dough into balls and ropes. Then place the balls and ropes on the large moon shape to make a face.
Press the face with your thumb to make cheeks. Have fun by making several kinds of silly moon faces.
STEP 5
Carefully remove the clay faces from the waxed paper and place them onto a greased cookie sheet.
With adult help, bake them in a 325 degree oven for 40 to 50 minutes or till dry. Let them cool completely. If you would like to make a hanging ornament, insert a paper clip into the dough before baking.
