Grasshoppers in small numbers do little damage, but in large numbers--especially during a drought--they destroy entire patches of vegetables. Grasshoppers are especially fond of cole crops, such as cabbage and broccoll. Keep them out of your garden by tilling the garden thoroughly in the fall to expose clusters of rice-like grasshopper eggs that birds will eat. Use chemicals during the season for severe infestations.
