Borers work their way into the stems and fruits of several vegetables. Squash vine borers get into the lower stems of cucumber, muskmelon, squash, and watermelon, causing the vines to wilt or die. Cut borers out of the stem with a knife, then mound soil over the stem. Use chemical controls around the base of the plant before it flowers.
