Name a plant shape and there's a juniper that conforms to it, from a low ground cover to a tall tree. All are serviceable landscape plants, with interesting foliage that is both scaly and needlelike--sometimes on the same plant. There are variegated forms in silver and gold and in blue-greens. All are tough and sturdy, needing minimal care.

Best known varieties are Japanese (d. chinensis) and its variety Pfitzer, a broad horizontal; Common (J. communis stricta), a tall, narrow plant; Shore (J. conferta), a soft ground cover; J. horizontalis varieties including Bar Harbor and Blue Rug, mounding ground covers; and J. h. plumosa, including Andorra, a spreading, loose plant. Junipers love heat, but may redden in winter. They all prune well.
