  5. This large family of evergreens includes small trees, shrubs, and ground covers that--depending on species-- grow wild from the eastern United States to California. Flowers that bloom in early spring range from white through tones of blue to purple. The flowers are shaped like tiny lilacs in a pyramidal form.

  7. Soil: Poor, dry soil is best to discourage root rot. Ceanothus is extremely drought resistant.

  12. Many of the native varieties are named for the areas in which they were found; for example, San Diego, Point Reyes, Carmel, Santa Barbara, and Mt. TranquilIon. Other good varieties are Feltleaf, Floire de Versailles, and Blue Blossom.
